when I boot up I get grey screen, padlock and password box. cannot enter a pw I'm familiar with. any help? thanks

Could that be a login to an encrypted volume?
If not, then it sounds like an EFI (firmware) password.
If an EFI password is lost, then you have a useless computer, unless you take to an Apple service shop to get the password cleared. There are no other options.
Does this Mac belong to you - and have you just now started seeing the unlock screen? And this same MacBook Air has booted normally until now?
