 Save your money, TOTALLY NOT WORTH IT!
I will never see another Hollywood movie in the theatres EVER!
I was so let down by this movie, I could write a whole book about it.
I was expecting more, WAY MORE!
Typical RUSHED HOLLYWOOD B.S. Movie, with a Happy Ending.
I could of wrote and produced this movie way better!
I was expecting real slow development of the psychologic suspense and toture, Exploring the darkest of corners....., but NO!
BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN !!!
BURN DOWN TINSLE TOWN !
BURN IT DOWN TO THE GROUND !
BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN !!!

Hmmmmm.......I don't normally watch movies, but I saw the newest Batman movie on a recent flight and though it was quite good. Maybe Hollywood is capable of more.
On the other hand, I saw Wedding Crashers on the same flight, so things do balance themselves out quality-wise. :p

I'm glad you've seen the light. I stopped giving my money to hollywood years ago. If a movie is worth seeing my friends will recommend and I'll rent. As far as I'm concerned the only good movie to come out in 2005 was Sin City.

Very disapointed to hear that.
I heard Quentin Tarintino was involved in teh project and frankly that gave me some hope.
Were the disapointments 'cause it disapointed as a psychological drama- or cause the adverts made it appear one way and played out another?
Will look for more details on why to avoid the film !

I think Hostel qualifies as an indie film 'cause it wasn't backed by a Hollywood studio.

Gee, I'm a big QT fan and was looking forward to seeing Hostel. The trailer looked really scary and said it's based on a real event. Maybe I'll wait for a few more reviews. I was going to see it today but chose Bloodrayne instead. It stunk to the heavens! I guess there's nothing good worth seeing right now.

Sin City was pretty good, not great. I was truely impressed that it captured what it is truely like when you are reading a comic book.

Things to remember about movies:
1. The latter half of August, the week of and after Labor Day, and pretty much the entire month of January are dumping grounds for crap movies that wouldn't make ANY kind of money at any other time of the year. Don't go see ANY movie that's released during those timeframes (e.g., Alone in the Dark, widely regarded as last year's worst movie, was released the first week of January).
2. Eli Roth's first movie was the wretched Cabin Fever, which got a lot of hype for being "the scariest movie ever" but which actually was just really, really bad (aside from some decent nudity by Cerina Vincent, who ALSO got nude in Not Another Teen Movie). Eli Roth = bad director (almost as bad as Uwe Boll, whose I'm-sure-it-would-suck-the-chrome-off-a-trailer-hitch Bloodrayne was also released this weekend).
3. Almost any movie that's released sans pre-screenings for critics is guaranteed to suck. (Although Aeon Flux, released without pre-screenings, only sucked a little bit.) Hostel had no pre-screenings.
4. Just because Quentin Tarantino "presents" a movie does not mean it will be good, although at least one such movie (Hero) was really, really good. QT has an odd sense of what's good vs. what's not good, and it doesn't really line up with anyone else.

Bloodrayne, wasnt it a video game ?Yes, which meant it was handicapped from the start. Most movies based on video games suck, although there are rare exceptions.
Video game movie + Uwe Boll = guaranteed disaster.
In fact, Uwe Boll also directed Alone in the Dark, last year's worst movie. Looks like he's going to try to set a new standard for suckitude.

Didnt see Alone in the Dark, I smelled that coming from far away.Sadly, Uwe Boll has five, count them, FIVE movies coming out in the next couple of years and they are ALL based on video games:
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2006) (post-production)
Far Cry (2006) (announced)
Postal (2007) (announced)
Hunter: The Reckoning (2007) (pre-production)
Fear Effect (2008) (announced)
I guarantee you that at least 3 of these 5 will be released during the "dumping zones" that I mentioned above: late August, the week of Labor Day, and January.

It was an indie flick... w/QT's name on it to grease the marketing and distribution wheels.
"Indie" is not a synonym for "good."
And, what, if I might ask, made you think "Hostel" would be anything more than an exploitative, gore flick?

This is just SAD:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10764848/
Hostel won the weekend box office with $20.1 million... beating both Narnia and King Kong.
THAT is why they didn't allow pre-screenings for critics... a lot of people wouldn't have gone to see the movie. They just went from losing money to making a LOT of it in a single weekend based on that one decision.

that's what i miss from europe. usually the really bad movies never show up in europe or with a long delay. so you can read the reviews and save your money.
i saw once a movie exec saying on tv that (most) movies are only profitable if the first weekend is good. after that the movie is a blockbuster and makes cash or it was bad and people read the reviews and avoid the movie. that's why they don't prescreen movies that maybe bad. he also said that only 1 out of 5 movies makes money and compensates for the losses in bad movies. that means 80% of hollywoods work is bad!!!!
it's been a long time since i saw a really good movie (that was not a high tech remake of an old story. in general i admit i like these remakes because of the technology and special effects. but i'm hoping for a new story, a new idea, something that surprises me.)

anyone seen "primer"?
erickkoch
Jan 8, 2006, 07:00 PM
Yes, on DVD. It was OK. I gave it a shot because I like to see indie movies, something different than the stardard CGI-alien, hero-kills-7-bad-guys-with-6-bullets, weepy-pretty-boy-romantic-comedy type stuff that comes out of Hollyweird.
Primer is a movie you have to follow very closely, it's a little confusing at times. It's about time travel but you have to think about it and keep hitting the rewind to follow what's going on. It won't appeal to everyone.
Edit: Yes, it was a slow movie but it held my interest enough to watch it.

January is the typical month when studios dump all the crap that's not good enough to show last summer or holiday season. These movies I wouldn't even bothering renting, much less even wanting to download for free of BT. LOL!
You'd generally want to avoid any movie released from now until April. It's all dreck.

Funny thing ... first thing I thought of Hostel from the commercials was "based on Saw/Saw II".
Horror movies in general are crap, since the media has desensitized all of us with bad news.
I find it hard to be scared when I keep thinking of the crappiness of the movie.
I also think Hollywood doesn't make as much as it used to because people don't get emotionally attached (i.e. find something/some situation in the movie that relates to themselves).

Last night I saw Hostel with some friends and the theatre was sold out. I thought there was a bit to much lead in before the "stuff" actually began to start take place. The movie didn't represent the greatest acting, but was quite grusome. A couple people walked out and there was a lot of laughing, cheering, and screaming.
The whole premise of the story is kinda F'ed up and disturbing IMO. Nonetheless it proved to be a numbing experience and quite a good horror movie considering the last one I saw, Wolf Creek.
Wolf Creek is by far the worst movie I've ever seen in my life and the critics agree. When I saw it with friends, 5 of the 12 people in the theatre walked out and the movie was horrible. I wish not to reflect on it much longer.

what is really sad is thinking about how many people who would rather sit down and pay for something that is intended to be disgusting and disturbing. it looks repulsive, i had/have no interst in seeing something like that. i am generally pretty easy going with regard to "sick" movies but this one just seemed to cross the line. <shrugs>

Sadly, Uwe Boll has five, count them, FIVE movies coming out in the next couple of years and they are ALL based on video games:
Hunter: The Reckoning (2007) (pre-production)Point of order, Hunter is based on the pen-and-paper RPG by White Wolf, released in the early 90s. The Hunter videogames are based on the Hunter RPG.
The RPG line had about 20 books before it was retired.

They can't make horror movies at Hollywood. Horror movie should be scary, not disgusting and lots of blood and screaming is not scary at all.
I totally agree to those who say you should not see this movie.

Dude it was sort of a clue when they had to pull out the old bait of "Ambulances had to be called to the theater” I mean please. If you are going to try and reel me in at least use bait that isn’t a 20+ years old. At this point I can do a pretty good job at smelling ****. And this movie had a fairly ripe order to it before it was even released.
