I got curious, so I tested my connection (use Speakeasy, it's the simplest test I found) and I am very happy with my download results, it's the upload results I don't like, but anyways, I'm just curious to see what others connections are.

Here's the test: SpeakEasy Speed Test (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/)

My nearest server was 3000 miles away ;) Upload speed is odd since it was hovering at 240 or so during the test and then suddenly dropped when it hit 100%

I'm hoping to get BE broadband in the next month or so which is offering up to 24Mbps depend on close to your exchange you are. At 600m, I'm hoping for good things though!

i (my parents) pay $27/month for 1.5mbps down and 384kbps up. for only $10 more we can get 3mbps down and 512kbps up--we're prolly doing that when the current contract expires. this is with sbc yahoo dsl.

It's not Photoshop, as I have no image editor, other than MS Paint on my computer. Plus, I'm no graphics guy. Not sure what you mean by the 1 on top of the grey arrow.

The equivalent speed tester here in Australia says that for very fast connections (such as ADSL2+) their test merely measures the capabilities of the computer's Java engine.

In theory, I get 24,000kbps download and 1,000kbps upload which is usually enough for a few tabs of MacRumors.

With cable the download speed is usually as fast as the line will let you go. This is dependent on distance from exchange and how many people are using the line. While the upload is usually capped.

My friend for example is on cable and has a down of 8000 kbs (64000 kbps) while his up is capped at 128 kbps  This is on some days, but as an average he gets 3000 kbs (24000 kbps)

Not if you have Cox as I do.

Called them last night about possible changes to my TV service. Was sweet talked in to doing their Premiere HSI (15 up/2 down) for just $29.95 a month for six months. A savings of $10 a month over their 5/2 service. Lets hope they do for me what Comcast did.

BTW here are my numbers DC first, NYC second, and SF last (pretty disappointed so far):

Wait, are you saying you're paying for Download Speeds of 15,000 and Upload Speeds of 2,000 and you're getting those kinds of speeds?

These things really vary depending on what testing system you use.

Using SpeakEasy, my previous stats for my work connection were 31727/15916 (See post #101 in this thread for the pic).

Now here's my latest one from MegaPath (this is my work connection again):
2006-01-12 19:23:30 EST: 41811 / 28865
Your download speed : 41811 kbps or 5226.4 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 28865 kbps or 3608.1 KB/sec.

I did it a second time on MegaPath, and it went so fast (the applet barely had time to display anything) that I got the result shown below. :D

How do you guys get it to show the pic? Yep I'm a newbie.

Download Speed: 2613 kbps
Upload Speed: 900 kbps

First we take a partial screenshot by pressing command > shift > 4 and then selecting the area. (the image is copied to your desktop) -- Command + Shift + 3 will take an entire screen, and Command + Shift + 4 + spacebar will take a screenshot of just one window.

Then you attach them by clicking this button. 39247

If you want to actually insert your image in with the text of the message (like I did above) you then click that button again, (after your files are uploaded) and then select the image you want to insert.

If you don't "insert" the image, it will just be placed at the bottom.

Comcast near Nashville, TN.

http://home.comcast.net/~andranita/firefox.jpg

Path of signal: street-->house-->four way cable splitter-->cable modem-->wired router-->50 foot ethernet cable-->four port ethernet hub-->my computer. I was getting around 2100 down for several months. Who knows why it is now faster. We certainly aren't paying for a better level of service. (Comcast doesn't offer levels here in Nashville).

Side note: the cable signal is being amplified by a wall plug-in-type amplifier installed by Comcast. That one cable is driving seven televisions (including three digital cable boxes) and the cable modem.

8MB or 8Mb? Big difference.

You should try a different speed tester, there's a lot of variables in speed testers.

And then, you should be complaining to your ISP about your lack of speed.

8Mbit, not byte. So there's 8 bits in a byte so I should be getting 8,000kilobits/second equating to a true Megabyte per second speed (if running at full tilt obviously). is that right?

We have complained and complained and are about to cancel with them. Apparently they've "got problems with their network" and "it's a bit congested at the moment"

You're telling me...

The weird thing is, the router shows up 8000 download, 756 up, but we've never seen those speeds come through.

Just a question for all you lucky people with INSANELY FAST downloading speeds (15MB/s+). Can Apple's iTMS servers keep up? Like when you download a full album in iTunes, how fast does iTMS throw data at you? I'd be amazed if it could max you out, considering at any given time there are thousands of other people D/Ling songs too. How long DOES it take to download an album at your fastest possible connection speeds???

Will do the test again when we get our DSL 6000 flatrate, and with the 16000 again.

:) I haven't downloaded an album per se. I have downloaded TV shows of about 150 MB in less than 5 minutes from Apple.

My work connection. I want to find a speed test local to japan-- it would be much faster than bouncing all the way to california and back.

This is really disappointing. I pay a lot of money for DSL and this seems rather slow. Granted, it's over an AirPort network, but it doesn't seem much faster plugged in directly. Didn't feel like actually testing that right now, though. My boyfriend has cable and it's insanely fast. I wish we could get cable out here.

Eh, nothing out of the ordinary. Except slow upload speeds.

While this is nothing compared to some of your speeds, this is amazing for our rural area, it is from a Wireless Broadband connection from the water-tower in our town. What's even better is that is over my Wi-Fi connection. It's a far cry from the dial-up days that we had to suffer through last week.

Actually if you look through this entire thread, the upload speed is way above average. Must be FIOS! FIOS rocks!

Here's mine with bulldog broadband in the UK using New York server:
Download Speed: 4818 kbps (602.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 457 kbps (57.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

The price i pay is very variable on account of the frequent billing errors that they make.
