Alright so i have purchased a 1tb hard rive so that i can back up my macbook pro just in case something happened to it. Anyways whats the best way of doing this, is it just by setting up time machine or should i just save everything that i want to the hard rive, music, photos, videos, movies, files, etc. Im just curious because i haven't done this yet and I do not know what the best option is.
Also in setting up time machine what is the best way to go, how do I go about doing this because i do not know how. I watched this video and I wondering if this way works.

Also at the 1:14 mark it says the files will be erased on the external hard drive, in my case i would not have to worry about this since this hard drive is brand new? And since it is brand new, do i need to format it? Thank you.
