What to bring for hostess of dinner party???

I have been invited to a dinner party this weekend.
and in keeping with good manners I need to bring a small gift for the hostess.
I know wine is traditional but they do not drink...
any ideas that wont cost me an arm and leg and they might like???

as stated, flowers are nice. so is a living plant-english ivy being a good indoor plant that also helps purify indoor air.
 
Remember, it's usual to only bring a gift if you know the host or hostess. If you are the guest of a guest, it shouldn't be necessary. (The guest who knows them should bring them something.)

If you are going to take a plant or cut flowers, Anthurium is my favourite right now. They look great (if not a little phallic) and last up to a month cut.

I know the person relativiely well since she is my graduate supervisor but not that well. I have not been to her house, and she just moved in too.
so its a house warming/ dinner party for the grad students...
the flower idea bears thought but no chocolates...
So I am still confused...😕

please keep the ideas coming,
 
I usually bring flowers or a cheesecake (from Junior's in Brooklyn, you haven't had cheesecake until you've tried theirs, available via web now) for dessert.
 
If it's partly housewarming, then the plant is a great idea. Lasts longer than just flowers and a lovely gesture...

If not chocolates, do you know any of her interests? If she cooks, an interestingly flavoured olive oil (the orange one in Williams Sonoma is amazing!) or vinegar might be welcome especially since they often come in interesting bottles that look good by the cooker.

Scented candles can be nice too - again if you can get one that is also decorative.

I used to go to a non-drinker's house and take a bottle of a local non-alcoholic heather 'wine' which was a spiced herbal drink. Not sure if you have any interesting equivalents...
 
Actually, bring a bottle of aged basalmic vinegar. Some people are such big fans of putting vinegar in salad that they treat the stuff like wine. If they haven't tried aged basalmic vinegar, they'll still love the stuff. It can also get quite pricey, but not VERY pricey......just pricey enough to give as a gift (no $3 stuff). 😉
 
I would bring a nice cake or some cookies. Home-made if possible, but could settle on something from a good baker if pressed for time. (Actually my girlfriend's time as I'm the cook and she's the baker in our relationship... 😉).

But of course chocolate (maybe in a nice bowl) and/or flowers (with a matching vase) are also clear winners.

Oh my god. I love balsamic vinegar so much. Mmph.

Um, if she's your graduate advisor, how about a bookish gift -- bookends maybe? Or, if you don't want to get something that will clash with the house, how 'bout a nicely bound blank "journal" that she could use as a guest book? Like this?

in the end I went with
a bottle of icewine...yes its booze but you drink so little of it at a time...
Flavored oils: basil,white truffle,chili and pink salt
Balsamic vinegar - small size... this is wrapped in a container that has basil and rosemary plants growing in it, it can be put in her garden after...
and Organic chicken liver treats for the dog...

so I am set for tomorrow...
