Check out this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=159877&highlight=posterpaint) thread for an app that robbieduncan (MR Member) made.
Or if you want something a bit more advanced, there's the open open source SeaShore (http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Graphics/Seashore.shtml) based on GIMP.

Pixen is also a good alternative.
I also highly recommend Pixen. It's an open-source program designed for pixel art creation, but can also be used as a paint program. It can be found here (http://www.opensword.org/Pixen/).

I just tried it, and found it to be rubbish. It appears that they haven't put any effort into a Mac version, they've just converted the Linux version, complete with menus in the wrong place and Control-based shortcuts!

I agree. While inkscape has many nice features, I don't want to have to run X11 when I use it! I must say, my most missed feature from Windows is Paint. HEAR THAT APPLE?! YOUR USERS WANT A SIMPLE GRAPHICS EDITOR BUILT INTO THEIR OPERATING SYSTEM!! GAH! WE'VE BEEN BEGGING FOR YEARS! HOW HARD IS IT?!?! *head explodes*

Tux Paint (http://www.tuxpaint.org/) is a good paint alternative if you have kids.

I don't have Leopard installed yet. Personally I'd recommend getting something else, like perhaps Seashore (http://seashore.sourceforge.net/) that actually works!

Just tried Pixen last night, didn't seem to work correctly. Not sure if that is because I am on Leopard or what... but the whole app was painfully unresponsive.

I always used microsoft paint to combine smaller pictures into one BIG picture. Is there an equivalent similar program that's free on Mac OS X?

Yeah I always used Paint on Windows XP as a quick-lauching way of creating avatars, annotating photos with circles and scribbles etc. - I thought it was an outrage that Preview didn't have an "Adjust size by percentage" until LEOPARD! Yet there is still no way to simply add a red circle to something (e.g. pointing out something I took on a photo to post on a forum).. I am stuck with hunting through MacRumors and Google for suitable apps to do that simple task!

Try Paintbrush. Nice and simple drawing app, but not as advanced (I think) as MS Paint. Close to it tho... :D
