i am right handed, but I want to start using my left hand to do
certain tasks throughout the day and slowly become ambidextrous.

Did you know that left handed children were taken as a bad omen
in Roman times, and were forced to use their right hands for all tasks? Just a little trivia for ya'. ;) :D

Interesting that almost 30% of respondents are lefties so far. The world average (I believe) is around 10%. Soon enough, we lefties will gain enough strength to crush the pathetic righties.

Either people are lying about being left handed OR left handed people are smarter and therefore a higher % of mac users are left handed than the % of the general population :-P

Well, people who are left handed are more likely to respond to the poll because they are in the minority.

Also, its more natural for a human being to be right handed for a number of reasons... (I don't know the reasons)

it would not surprise me if there are more left handed mac users than the international average. Being left handed means you are better at using the right side of your brain (makes sense doesn't it? :p). The right hand side of your brain is the more creative and imaginative side and the left side is the more logical reasoning and common sense. Left handed people are more likely to be a non-conformist and "Think Different" which is why they buy Apple. My theory to explain why there are still more right handed people with macs is a, because there are a lot more right handed people, and b, because they still choose to buy apples, but not out of the yearning to be different but due logical reasoning, like they are the best computers out there, to give but an example! What would be interesting would be to take a look at the think different campaign and see the ratio of lefties to righties. I know Einstein waas left handed, anyone know anything about the others??

My .02

P.S you may have guessed I am left handed and proud. It pisses me off the way my wireless logitech optical ambidextrous mouse resets its prefs all the time to the right handed way! grrr

Rightie, but ambidextrous...

I think lefties end up being more ambidextrous than righties due to the fact that many things in this world are build for right handed people and they have to adapt to it...I just think it's fun being able to do things either handed. :)

For all you who are using "ambidextrous", that means you are able to do a single task with either hand [equally well], such as write, or throw. Is that what you meant?

I, on the other hand (no pun intended :D ), am cross-dominant. Some tasks I do with my left and some with my right. I eat with my left, but I write with my right. I throw with my left ("southpaw") but I use a mouse with my right.

I'm a lefty, but I've always used the mouse with my right hand. I think I made a good choice, since I'd have to move the mouse to the other side whenever I wanted to use a computer effectively. I think that I do just about everything else left handed, I even prefer chewing on the left side of my mouth, come to think of it (I don't know if that has anything to do with my handedness). And yes, I do think different, beyond the fact that I use a mac.

I feel that lefties will more readily vote in this poll, feeling that they are a minority. So the result will be above the average, but I doubt its significance. I'm a lefty BTW.

I do use the mouse on the left on my machine but i use loads of computers everyday and right handing is easy. I guess I ambidextrous with a computer mouse but nothing else. I play hockey, cricket and guitar the right handed way though. With hockey sticks and cricket bats in rigth handed positions I find that it is the left hand doing the precision control and the right arm providing the power, just cos I'm handed doesn't mean my left arm is strongest, my right arm is strongest and clumsyest! As for guitar, I find that the right handed position is better for left handed players, because it is your left hand doing all the work on the fretboard with only right hand doing basic strumming/picking. Hendrix plays left handed guitar but is right handed so he does the same as me only other way round!

Nice return. Catch! :)

I'm also, what Hemingray refers to as, cross-dominant. (Actually I had no idea as well until I saw his post.) I write with my left hand, use silverware with my left hand, etc. But my strong, physical side is my right. I use a mouse with my right hand.

Hi there, new to this forum, but I have been an avid reader for some time.
Nice non-flaming people here.
I, myself, am a lefty ? well, bidexterous (spelling?) as it is. I write with my left hand, kick with my left foot etc. but my left hand is the preferred one. Except for one thing - Whenever I use a mouse I use the right one, which has it advantages. That means I can write/ take notes with my left (or operate my audiorecorder).
Good thing. I think.
Lefty. And proud of it.
Sorry for all the grammatical blunders, but it's late, I'm tired. Oh, and I'm danish.

I too am left-handed, but learned to mouse with my right hand while attending Drexel University (the first school to require students buy computers...Macs at the time). Now I find it useful because I can use my left hand to do other things as I mouse. Interestingly, my Dad is right-handed but uses his left to mouse--but he owns a PC.

I am predominately right handed. I write with my right, shoot baskets with my right, kick right, and use my mouse with my right. However I use my left to drive, hold my girls hand, carry the shotgun while hunting, make turkey and deer grunt calls, and take apart eMacs. I can also throw the football left handed because when I was in Jr High I broke my right index finger and still wanted to play football so I learned how to throw 10-15 yard passes left handed......beyond 15 and the pass flutters too much.....but i can throw a pretty good spiral up to 15 yards. I am more accurate too with my left when passing. I can also shoot hook shots left handed. I dribble with both hands as any good basketball player should be able to do.

Primarily?... I'm right handed, but do (obviously) use my left hand ;). I have always felt more comfortable kicking with my left foot, though. Which I think is kinda strange as most right handers are right footed (likewise w/ lefties).

Well, I am still at school and I'm left handed...do you remember how hard school is for lefties? Yeah I'm going through that now. But I am learning to write right handed to make my life easier! I do most stuff left handed but cricket and hockey are right handed actually everything with a racket or bat is right handed except tennis. I've recently started using the mouse left handed. But at school I have to use it right handed because you're not allowed to change it.
I don't actually know many lefties...maybe 7 or 8....so if you are one please e-mail me! <amy1607@gmail.com>

I'm right handed... But I can use my left for many things... I have two computers at work and i am often found to be using them at the same time... Not showing off here - I hadn't even noticed until one of my colleagues said that i looked like the dude from 'The Flight of the Navigator'! I'm not bad with my left foot tho I much prefer to play right footed!

My girlfriend is a leftie and she is having problems with the way things are setup solely for righthanded people and so she has to adapt... But I think that in general most left handed people are much better with both hands than right handed people! Does anyone else find this?!

I am a righty by birth I suppose, but I can use my left hand for quite a few things....;)

I try to focus on using my left and right sides equally. Certain things I find too hard like writing and my golf swing, but for the rest I try to use them equally.

I'm right handed. My handwriting when I use my left hand sucks (using my right hand isn't much better :D). I can eat with my left hand, mouse with my left hand, I can steer a car with my left hand as I typically rest my right hand on the shifter (car is an auto, doesn't need to be there but more comfortable for me).

i'm 100% right handed. there is nothing my left hand can do that my right hand cannot do. my right hand is superior and unmatched.

BTW, i don't think this poll is smart. obviously a majority is righthanded

I'm right handed as that's what learnt at school but I can write fairly well with my left and my daughter who's 2.5 uses left and right seemingly as the mood takes her. I also have an uncle who's totally ambidextrous, his party trick is to hold a pen in each hand and draw a picture in stereo so to speak, kind of like watching a CNC machine.

How would you miss out on golf is you were a lefty? They make lefty clubs, and other than that the entire game is universally sided (ie teeboxes work, fairways work, rough, greens, whatever all both hands). So, what are you missing out on if you are a lefty playing golf?

Damn...I thought it was a political question. I've yet to meet a Mac user that didn't lean to the left - and I've always wondered if others have seen this correlation, too. Maybe cause most artists are liberals, though quite a few of these people I know aren't artists. And yes, I do know a few people that lean to the right (and they use PC's - though I also know some PC users that are liberals).

I doubt there is such a direct correlation between liberals and Mac users. I am sure you can find some connections and depending on your friendbase quite a few liberal Mac users, but generically speaking I would hesitate to say Mac users are liberals. I personally don't see the connection as a rule, perhaps as a coincidence.

What does my handedness have to do with my political standing?

I can do most things with either, but as far as the way things are primary done:

Writing: left
Mouse: right
Shift key: left
Spacebar: right
Arm wrestling: left
Throwing/catching: right
Telephone: left
Punching: right
Brushing teeth: left

I consider myself left handed, though, because I can do many things with my left hand that "right-handed" people can't.

Overall there are around 9 - 11 % left handers among humans. They form a higher percentage amongst professions such as architects, designers, engineers etc, and a lower percentage of lawyers, solicitors, accountants and so on.
Left handedness in animals doesn't seem to be so common (or is it that no-one can be bothered to find out?), but apparently parrots hold food only with their left foot, and I have occasionally caught left handed flat-fish (the head is twisted to the left side instead of the right) and left handed lobsters (the crushing and cutting claws are transposed).
Me? Left handed and proud of it.

Edit: A work colleague has a left-handed watch with an Apple logo on it - part of the 'Think Different' ad campaign I think.

Interesting how these things resurrect after a year or two. As for me, technically right-handed. But I used to draw/paint with my left hand, then write with my right. Go figure...probably due to the evenness between my left and right brain. Seeing as how I'm taking genetics, computer science III (java programming), music history, graphic design history, and philosophy all by choice in one term, I guess that shows elsewhere.

The 12 inch *Books only have ports on the left side of the computer, not both sides as the 15 and 17 inch models do.
