Yeah. Why can't people just hit "Post Reply". I'm sure there's a way. Maybe just remove the quote button for the first post? Something like that.

I like quotes so you know who's being replied to and on what topic. Especially since these forums tend to fall away from topic so quickly.

Maybe. But I think it's ignorance too. The quote button is there with a post and the post reply button is further down and on the other side of the screen. Maybe if post reply was under the quote button...

Quoting a user isn't bad. It's quoting a whole news story that is the "pet peeve".

I think quoting is ok as long as the person using the quote corrects something in the previous statement, adds something to the previous statement, or uses the previous statement to emphasize a point. Needless quoting just gets annoying, and helps people pad their post count.
For Example User A posts: It was totally awesome
User B quotes User A: I agree.

I like quotes so you know who's being replied to and on what topic.Yes, but then reduce the quote to exactly what you're answering to, like I just did right now (;)). Don't quote the whole post. That's just as bad as not quoting it at all...
And you don't necessarily have to quote the post directly over yours, if you see that no posts have been added there's always the option to edit your post to remove/shorten the quote, right...?

If you guys aren't careful, you're going to wasteland Lacero's thread. ;)
Anyway, I think removing the quote button might be cool, but it also could have some negative ramifications for when people are trying to genuinely quote a particular part of the first story. I don't know, it annoys me as well, but I don't know what a good alternative would be. I'd say put it in the FAQ, but nobody seems to read those anyway.

Well, you could always manually select the text you want to quote. Sure it's more work, but it's worth it. It's quite annoying to see the entire story quoted.

the answer is rather simple. if you see someone doing it report it and we will edit it out. also if you see people doing small spam posts to pad post counts, report that too, we routinely delete those, but you guys need to let us know about them.

Well, I could. And I do. But not everyone does, especially newbies. If the mods can take care of it, hate to give them any more work to do, but I guess that's what they're there for.
I don't know if this is on your list too Lacero, but I've also seen a lot more "first post"s lately, where that will be all they say, except for maybe also quoting the entire article. I'm sure the mods can edit that stuff out too, but that should be an obvious no-no here. I'm surprised any forum tolerates that type of thing anymore.

It sounds as though most are in agreement here, in that quoting the complete OP is a nuisance. I routinely edit out all the irrelevant stuff if I'm quoting someone, hopefully leaving just a small but useful snippet for people to follow the discussion.
Besides the 'readability' issue, is there a bandwidth or server-space issue for MacRumors if all the threads are much longer due to overuse of quotes?

Yes. Unfortunately every time someone improperly quotes, does a "first post!", or anything else generally annoying Arn is forced to feed another cute and cuddly kitten (or puppy as the situation warrants) to the trolls who run the servers.

It's also a waste of bits when people quote posts with large images, or when they quote me after one of my ridiculous statistical charts!
We clean these posts up when we hear about them.
It's just part of our team effort for 2006: to get the number of annoyances down to a comfortable 19 or 20. ;)

someone needs to lighten up a bit or move up to the next size of panties- if you start making a lot of noise, some people might go out of their way to make it worse ;)
So in the next 24, might there be any MAC vs. Mac, grammar, spelllling, OMG!!, etc.....
It might be best sometimes to try not letting these things bother you so, since no matter what you say, there will always be people who will continue to do them.
Good luck!

I have a similar problem with a certain relative who forwards me forwards of forwards without cutting out the extra copies. What do I do? I forward it back and forth to myself a few dozen times and send it back. She has yet to get the hint, but it makes me feel better. :)
The trick with feeding kittens and puppies is that they're like cars. Their parts are worth more than their whole. Run them through the chop shop first. It may seem cruel, but you'll save more furry friends in the long run.
All that said, the ability to quote is too important to chop all together. I just wish everyone understood that their points are much clearer if they delete all but the part of the quote they're addressing.
Perhaps a little code to the "Quote" button script:
If length(quoted text) >200 characters, then Popup Window ("Remember to delete all but the portions of the quote being directly addressed.")
or something like that?
Lacero - try Boxer Briefs. The support of briefs and the comfort of boxers. Who could want more? That's why I'm so pleasant!

something that was touched upon, but not directly stated...
THE most annoying thing is in the monthly desktops or pics of 'your set up', someone posts a huge image, and then after that is 15 pages of the the image, plus "sweet..."
Maybe the MR site can be 'adjusted' so that when quoting a post with a picture, the 'quote' includes a link to the image instead of the image.
