Yup. It's fast and my whole computer seems snappier when I use it. I can't wait until the final version (with tabs!) is released.

not me default yet, but i can see it happening within the next year.

Yes.
It is faster than ie 5.2, and crashes less. I've heard horror stories of it replacing valuable system folders or some such, but I've kept clear of that so far. On the whole, I find it to be quick and intuitive.

Can't make the switch before tabbed browsing and banner blocking appear.

I send in plenty of bug reports, but all-in-all, I'm happy with Safari. I even like the brushed aluminum look; I think it frames Web pages nicely. There is no perfect browser, I'm sorry to say. I wish that all browsers supported all of HTML and CSS, but none of them supports these standards entirely yet. I am disappointed in Safari's lack of support for the "title" attribute, but then again, hardly any of the other browsers support it either. I would also like to see a "link" navigation bar like they have in Mozilla, Opera, and iCab. But do you see me using those browsers as my default just because they have links navigation bars? No. All tolled, I am satisfied with Safari and support its development.
P.S. I must say it is so cool to have three Cocoa Web browsers to choose from now, and they all show up with "Open URL in..." commands in my Services menu!

Chimera is my default--much more stable and mature right now (and has tabs)--but I look forward to Safari overtaking it soon.

Yes, but banner blocking blocks banners, popup blocking blocks popups.
Banner blocking is in Mozilla, but not Safari.

I wanted to use safari, since it was an apple product and I want to support them in everything they do.

I run it almost exclusively. I am using the enhancer, which allows me to access self-signed ssl sites, and has the handy, open in ie menu item when i run into problems

im with Chris here. Chimera is still faster and more stable/polished, but I would gladly switch to Safari when it catches up in terms of speed, rendering, and interface issues. that being said I doubt Apple will ever adopt tabs so I may never switch, but i'm still hoping

Well, not if you use forms a lot (like I do when controlling my sites). And when you access a lot of scripts on you localhost Apache, then Safari is 2 - 3 times faster for me!!!

I've tried Safari, a couple of its features are currently lacking so far.
I will use it from time to time. And I will check out updates when the show up.
Also, if any web pages fail to render correctly in Netscape 7.01, I will try them in Safari and report them to Apple if Safari fails to render them ciorrectly as well. (Too many pages only work correctly on IE *bleh*).
Since there are enough choices for web browsers on Mac OS X, IE is no longer needed except for the rare site that is so IE specific.

Used it over the weekend starting a dot-Mac website -- and it was slow in doing everything, and couldn't handle the pop-up windows in slide-show mode.
It seemed to run in slow motion whilst online at the Apple Store, too. Consequently, will stay with IE and OmniWeb for awhile longer.

I think it's great so yes I've "switched" to it as my defautl, but I havnt not removed Chimera from my dock just yet....

I removed IE from my menu bar before the download was complete on the 7th. I've not had too much trouble with it opening certain pages. As far as speed I can't tell maybe I should open IE back up and see if I can tell a difference....naaaahhhhh.:D
Things I like about Safari are 1) The renaming of bookmarks and 2) the placement of special bm's in the frame.
The only thing I want from Safari AUTOFORM! I used this a lot in IE.

Not yet. I haven't used IE in forever anyway, and have been using Netscape 7 for about 6 months now. After using tabbed browsing, I find non-tabbed to be kinda frustrating.
Once Safari has tabbed browsing, I'll switch over to it. In the meantime, I definitely like it better than IE.

I use it occassionally. I am not in favor of the complete bookmark solution because it adds steps to getting to sites I use regularly unless I crowd a host of folders on the tool bar.
The naming stuff is nice. When compared to how often bookmarks are accessed, having the naming box pop up is not enough to over come the lack of efficiency.
I have reported a couple of sites that crash and that load very slow that I am sure will get fixed soon.
Chimera is still my first choice and that is mostly because of the ease of using bookmarks which is suppose to be Safari's strong point. Go figure!!
That's my story and I am sticking to it....

Safari is much faster than IE is...although it has it's moments of bugginess...it's still all around a much more streamlined browser I find...

I'm going to wait a while and continue using Chimera. I did download the OpenOffice beta to try out.
It's a big download, about 166Mb with the XDarwin and it takes a while to install. I imported a word doc, no problem, although the font doesn't look the same. It looked bolder and fuzzier.

Waiting for tabbed browsing... otherwise quite nice.
It occurs to me that tabbed browsing is much more important to Mac and linux users than windows users, because in windows you already have buttons for all windows in the menubar. Not exactly tabbed browsing, but it has the same advantage, the one-click-single-location switching between windows. And it works for all programs. On macs, without tabs we have to resort to the window menu or whatever bits of the windows aren't hidden, if any.

Implement Exploder... :p
or, as a few of my classmates agreed on, Big Load
I really don't see the need for tabs. But even w/o the tabs, Safari seems faster than Mozilla, or BL, especially when loading images and animations.

Need........tabbed browsing........and support for https:// sites........and I'll switch from Chimera.

Jan 13, 2003, 08:42 PM
90% switched
It needs to be able to open https sites, such as my bank. Tabs would be a nice addition.
For the sites that Safari won't function with, I still have Chimera, but IE has lost it's place in my Dock. :)
Add the two features mentioned above, and Chimera will be gone as well.

Using Safari right now but you know I really can't decide between IE, Netscape, Mozilla, Chimera, Safari and all of the other browsers out there :( Chimera is and always will be my default browser...until Safari can do better.

Chimera.... faster.... I would like to know which Chimera you are using because Safari ****s over every version of Chimera I have ever used for speed. In fact, that was one of the key features of Safari, the fact that it is not based on the same engine as Mozilla/Chimera and is FAR cleaner and compact as far as the code is concerned.
As for "have I switched"; I had to say "undecided" because there was no answer for not totally. I have both Chimera and Safari open all the time but I use Safari most of the time. I just can't do my banking on Safari... it does not let me log in. I have filed a bug report, though, and I would imagine that it will be fixed soon.
Everyone keeps talking about when "Safari is up to a full version with tabbed browsing". Last time I checked, they refused to comment on up-coming features.... I am praying for tabbed browsing but I am not 100% sure we will see it just yet. I think that would be something that the people at Apple would decide, not so much the guy who is designing it. I am sure Apple would have said "this is what we want, make us something great around that".

Absolutely not. That's like asking if I switched to the public beta of OS X. It's fun to play with, but real work requires a more sophisticated browser. Until Apple develops more key features in Safari I will wait.

Thank you Apple. With Safari and Keynote, I'll be down to only Micro$oft Word and Excel. If I can find a replacement to those, I can say I'm free from Microsoft!
Two more down, few left to go!
And now, after saying them, I will be happy to say I use Keynote instead of saying power point. Keynote just has a good ring to it!

What's wrong with good ol' Apple Works? I remember when MS was just a no go area on the Mac and the closest thing MS had to Word was MS Works and Claris Works just ripped the floor up. It was as good as Office in many areas and better than Office in even more areas.
Now we have Apple Works and Keynote... what more could we want???

I'll switch when the get tabbed browsing back in. In this day and age I don't know why they shipped a browser that didn't have that feature already implemented.
While its cool to have a different way to view web pages and such, not being able to see where a hyperlink is going to take me bites.
Not having it use JDK1.4 also bites.

Try View, Status Bar (or Command+\). It didn't come enabled by default, but there is a status bar in Safari, and it definitely will tell you where a hyperlink is going to take you.

NOTE: banner blocking blocks all ad banners, whether popups or not. Popup blocking just blocks popups.
Yes, I've switched (mostly) to Safari, and have only had a couple scattered problems with it. It's a great start, though I'd gotten used to tabbed browsing like so many others on the boards.
Hopefully in 1.0!

There's nothing to complain about....its still beta and its kicks Exploder's, Mozilla's, and Chimera's asses. I don't know why someone would say its "fun to play around with" Its way better than any browser that I have ever used on any OS.

Chimere is still the best of the OS X browswers out there in my opinion. I have used Safari, but the way it handles bookmarks is not very useful, I think it should act like all of the other browsers out the and dislpay them in a nice pane on the side of the browsing window, instead of taking up a WHOLE ENTIRE browser window. I also can't go back to a browser without tabs. Tabs make surfing a much cleaner experience. In addition until Safari can remember all of my logins and password, like Chimera, I won't use Safari. And thats the bottom line.

isnt this open source or whatever? why dont you guys write in your own tabs and send the code to apple

at home no, i love tabbed browsing too much
at work yes, because i use my PC mostly
if it had tabbed browsing i would switch fully. i will switch any os x computer that i work on to safari over IE just to cripple ms from this point on.

why use it when you can use Chimera, which is faster, and has
more features? Safari is still very 'betaish'. But it will be great
later. Chimera for now though ;).

You'd think Tabbed Browsing is like a trademark of Chimera or something. Everyone says they want it, but nobody but Chimera implements it. Does anyone know if it has a patent or something (just curious)?

If there was a patent on it, wouldn't it still be ok to use it in Safari?

Regardless, I doubt you could patent tabs--a feature used in many different types of applications. Opera has it already.

It's great to finally have a dedicated Apple-branded web browser. Yes - I've switched. Although, I still have IE just in case I have problems opening any sites.
For example - my wife uses hotmail.com, and I had a Javascript error in Safari that didn't exist with IE. But maybe that was just a one-off...

My wife switched over to Safari, very happy with its ease of use. Impressed that it imported her favorites from IE and has most freqently used readily available in the menu bar!

I sure did, it is sweet and fast, although it has some flaws and sometimes I'm forced to go back to IE, but hey its only a beta version right? can't wait for the final version:)
