i created a site in iweb , now how do i upload it to my non .mac site

You publish your site to a folder from iWeb and then you upload that using a simple FTP app to your hosts server. FTP Thingy or Fetch work fine and can be found on VersionTracker (http://www.versiontracker.com)

Is this not mentioned in the iWeb help?

Mac OS X has the Apache webserver built in, so you can host a website from your computer (dump files either in /Library/WebServer/Documents or ~/Sites), assuming you can set it up to do so (like, you can get your own IP address and such)

If you have dedicated hosting, that's a different matter.

As far as using web sharing from your mac, why would anyone want to waste bandwidth hosting a site from their own computer?

My favorite app is Transmit for FTP, but not free. THe best free ones that I like are Cyberduck and Fugu.

At any rate, telecomm, I'm coming dangerously close to going over my monthly transfer limit for my site hosting - there's one particular image that's 400kb in size (too lazy to optimize for web, lol), and that file alone uses up gigs of transfer...ugghhh. If I could, I'd host that file on my connection, cept mine is too slow and i bittorrent all the time anyway. That's outside of the fact that images don't show up if you're using opera 8.51 on windows XP, and that my site is VERY accessibility-unfriendly. Meh.

Ah, fair enough. Since I'm on a laptop, I'd never even considered hosting from my computer (and my site's on a university server, which, to the best of my knowledge, has no bandwidth cap).

I used Cyberduck and it is awesome. If in a pinch and I have to do it from work (windows) I use the FTP built in to Internet Explorer.

yeah, i have a semi-stable DSL connection that changes IPs on me every few weeks (only when i mess around with the router and modem), and a couple of desktops doing nothing...so it would be feasible for me. cept, i've resorted to hosting them on my .mac for now, until i switch hosts, so i'm really not concerned right now :)

when i use it, my sites are only available locally.
