View Full Version : Poll: Where to buy your clothes?

Wear to you buy your clothes (hahah, lame joke, sorry)?
In this thread we started to debate on whether or not is appropriate to "pop" or "upstand your collar. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=175957&highlight=music+video
Since that thread went totally off topic, I thought it would be appropriate to start a new thread.
I shop mainly at Abercrombie and Polo. Then some J. Crew and American Eagle (even though I'm not a big fan of that store). I have 2 shirts from gap, 2 from lacoste, but mainly AF.
I do have some clothes from banana republic too.

Dress shirts: Nordstrom
Jeans: Kohls
Socks: LL Bean
Undies: Kohls
Undershirts: Nordstrom
Shoes: Zappos
My "work" uniform is either a white or blue pinpoint dress shirt, undershirt, jeans, rag wool socks and a pair of Keens.
My casual outfit is a marathon shirt, jeans, same footwear.

I tend to shop mostly at Goodwill, or somewhere I can get a bulk of them for cheap although when I occasionally have a fair amount of free ca$h at hand, I like to browse places like the Haight in SF or Telegraph in Berkeley, they usually have a lot of interesting consignment and vintage stuff.
Most of my wardrobe is pretty bland right now, mostly due to being broke for the past few months and it being inappropriate weather for some of my more interesting stuff but I hope to go through another cycle of clothes soon.
I hate shopping at the mall or any brand-name specially stores that appear therein, why should I go there and pay for an overpriced set of clothes when I can go to someplace like the cheap Chinese shops on Clement street in SF and not spend more than $30 for a bagful of stuff?

American Apparel (http://www.americanapparel.net/)
No, this isn't some lame patriotic clothing company.. in fact its very against the "institution". It used to be a Canadian importer of American clothes, but now all the garments are made in downtown Los Angeles, sweatshop and brand free! They give their workers great benifits.
Sorry if it sounds like I'm promoting them, but I applaud their business ethics. And their clothes are GREAT. Fit well (for tall skinny people) and good quality at a decent price.

Old Navy clearance racks--I love that store!!-- and wherever else there is a good sale. Talbot's sometimes when they have their semi-annual sales and Vicki's when they do their semi-annual sale. Their Body by Victoria is the most comfortable bra EVER!! Maybe next sale I'll try to IPEX... if it's on sale. :) I can't justify paying full price on something that has a 90% markup--especially after paying $10 for a normally $140 skirt at Express (and they still probably made a profit, allbeit a small one). That's just murder to my wallet. Give me the security that I'm at least getting some sort of bargain....

Ecolution, clothes made of hemp. Okay, it may sound all hippy and everything, but check out the prices. Despite being expensive, I've yet to come across more comfortable, long lasting cloths. Far superior to cotton and despite not having an obvious label, they look better for longer than cotton based products. All other benefits aside, hemp is far superior to cotton.
The only labels I like are Quiksilver and those found at REI.

American Apparel. Love love love love their undies! I'm also ammassing quite a few of their shirts (both unprinted, and printed such as concert tees and threadless.com).
Lacoste.
Agent Provocateur (and yes they do have more than just lingerie and sexy heels).

AlX-- their jeans fit me w/out hemming (at least the 'short' length and they offer free hemming on regularly priced jeans).
Gap- can't beat their sale prices.
J.Crew for sweaters and tanks.
Simple shoes. <-- they also have a 'green' line.
My Asics sneaks.

The web site of the Michigan Historical Center uses Michiganian. Michiganian has a long history. It is the term used for the state's citizens in The Collections of the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society since the 1870s and in Michigan History magazine since just after the turn of the 20th century. But people who call Michigan their home use the word they like best. There is no "official" term.

Yea, I have to explain it all the time. Meijer and Meyer may be related, but it was long before they moved to the US. Funny thing though, A Fred Meyer store is similar to a Meijer in that anything you need you can get it there. Also, thanks to Kroger buying Fred Meyer in the mid-90's you now have Fred Meyer Jewelers around the US.

Unlike everybody here (it seems), I don't buy clothes. I haven't in the last several years. But, my wife occasionally buys me something. I tend to keep clothes until well beyond the point at which any rational human would keep them.
Anyhow, my clothes are simple. I have some dress pants that I got from Hechts or something during some sale or another. I have some dress shirts that I've had for the last 8 years or so (augmented by gifts from various people). I have some custom made dress pants and a suit (India is so cheap...). T-shirts that I've collected for about 15 years. Jeans come from PacSun outlet stores. Shirts are all the same thermally-wafer style from Gap (or Old Navy - I'm not sure) in about 4 colors (but I have 3 in black).
Generally, I wear the jeans and a black shirt.
That was weird - I feel naked now.

I don't buy clothes with a specific store in mind, but I find that I simply don't like what's in most stores, except for Le Chateau, and 1 or 2 other places.
Oh, and I've pretty much given up on tryin to get jeans anywhere at all. I like something that's a little loose around the waist, so my pants are on my hips, and I like it to show off my totally hot ass, but leave room in front for the package. And, as if that doesn't eliminate almost everything already, I like the legs to be a little flaired, ala '70s.

I'm starting to really like the Abercrombie & Fitch button-downs from the clearance rack :D. At $20 for a very well made shirt, I can't say no. I do, however, have to roll up the sleeves and unbutton the top two buttons, NorCal-style. The shorts are pretty nice too.

H&M. I used to stock up when I go to Europe, but last December I saw one in Fifth Ave in NY and another one in a mall in PA, so I guess I'll go broke in style here in the US :D.
I also like clothes from Old Navy, Banana Republic and A&F.
I heart H&M. Unfortunately, there isn't one terribly near me, so I stock up when in the area of one (like Chicago). Otherwise, I mostly go to thrift stores or the occasional dept store like Nordstroms.
Sometimes I shop at Urban outfitters, but their build quality is crap.
When I lived on the west coast, I used to like asian flea/street markets, as I am a smaller build, so I could find a lot of cool stuff that fit. Those in Vancouver BC were excellent.
