Figures, just yesterday or the day before I downloaded 1.2 Beta. Oh Well.

Will be tomorrow...can't do it now because I'm frantically trying to put together a philosophy of education manifesto.

Is it Universal?

Not universal yet. They say a universal alpha version will be ready in the summer of 2006.

I'd like to see it running but I just downloaded OpenOffice 2.0 for XWindows on Mac OS X and it seems okay. I don't really care to go backwards at this point to version 1.1.5 on which NeoOffice 1.2 is based.

Is it a big deal not to have XWindows/X11 installed?

Well one thing is that NeoOffice has a more "Mac" like experience, in that its menus are in the usual place, as opposed to inside the Window in the X11 version.

My main issue with NeoOffice however, and for that matter, OpenOffice is the god-awful file browser it uses. The NeoOffice guys should really try to replace it with the standard Mac file browser.

Last I heard the Aqua porting for all the Ooo projects had been scrapped (given up upon). I may be wrong though.

NeoOffice 1.2 is pretty slick. It's much, much nicer looking than OpenOffice.org running in X11, but it's no speed demon. If you work with 3D objects in Draw, for instance, you may wait a few seconds for objects to move or rotate. I think OOo under X11 has the same problem. But then again, this is an office suite, not a first person shooter. It's plenty fast enough for word prcessing and spreadsheets and non-3D drawing (charts, graphs, page layout, etc.). My biggest gripe, as others have pointed out, is the OOo file dialogs. I didn't like them back in the StarOffice 5 days on OS/2 and I don't like them now. Other than that, NeoOffice has all the features that make OpenOffice.org so good, wrapped in a (mostly) native MacOSX interface.
