Help! Need a way to mix/edit/add effects to audio files

I've never done anything like this before so I have no idea what's out there. But basically I want to take a few tracks from iTunes and mix them, add some effects, fade in and out, etc. This is just for a one-time project so I would like shareware or freeware. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks for your help!

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/mac) is pretty easy to use and has a nice set of features for the price (free).
