i'm not sure whether to post this under software or hardware as i don't know for sure what's causing the problem:

over the last few weeks i've been busy ripping all of my futurama dvds onto my powerbook in handbrake so as to be able to put them on my ipod. for the most part, this has worked out quite well. that said, what i would generally do is make a queue and leave the computer ripping for a couple of hours. recently, however, i've come back to my powerbook only to find it stuck on the grey-screen-of-death (not sure what else to call it, but it's the one with the sort of dialogue box in the center of the screen with a picture of the power button that says you need to restart on account of an 'error' or something). i began to notice though that this most often occured when i'd left the computer running on my bed (although i have experienced it on hard surfaces as well). my question pertains to potential overheating of the powerbook. when i've found the machine frozen, the underside has never seemed overwhelmingly hot, but it certainly has been warmer than normal. either way. is it possible that this is a software glitch, or can 'overheating' cause the powerbook to lock-up like that?

Generally, Macs sleep rather than have kernel panics if they overheat. I don't think your problem is temperature-related. Have you installed any third party RAM? Go into Disk Utility and Verify your Disk (not the permissions). Also, are you running other apps at the same time, particularly file sharing apps? :)

i've gone through and verified my disk several times, seemingly to no avail. as far as ram is concerned, i got my powerbook bto with two 512 dimms, so there's no third-party hardware installed. also, when running handbrake i generally have all other apps closed, as well as my bluetooth and airport disabled, which generally allows me to rip upwards of 40/45 fps. as a side note, i generally don't believe in file-sharing applications. at least not these days. mainly on account of how i've seen them muck up the rest of the computers in my house. granted, the rest of my family is all on windows machines, but since i'm the only one with enough expertise to know how to fix things, i generally get stuck with that burden...
