For $49, I will buy the upgrade. I already use the current version of iDVD and I hopethat for 50 bucks the new version will be better. That is, I assume that iDVD new version will offer some decent improvement (like extending the ammount of video that I can burn to my DVDs. Also I do admit there is something nice about getting a box and other physical goodies. It might even come with a manual (god forbid...)

No Superdrive so no need. I have broadband so can download the rest of the iLife apps fairly quickly.

Going to? I already did! It's coming at the end of the month and I can't wait to start putting chapters in my movies. iDVD is great. Everytime I bring a project to school on a DVD, people think that I'm a friggin' genius! I just send them here (http://www.apple.com).

Poll should have included:
No, it will come loaded in my new iMac!
I've been waiting for six months to purchase an iMac. As soon as they are bumped, Apple can have my money. :D

I haven't heard anything about iDVD 3 be able to get more onto a DVD, but getting chapter support, to me, is worth the $49 by itself.

Chapters is why I'm getting iDVD3 too, I have FCP3 but am not ready (or do I need) DVDSP, and that is all iDVD was missing for me.

It'll be in my new machine, but I probably wouldn't have if I already had a previoius version of iDVD.

Not to get too off subject, but I ned more that 60 (or 90 if low quality) minutes on a DVD. I think FCP3 gives more, what about the FC express? The apple tech pages talk about other features, but I just want more minutes crammed on my DVD. Chapters too...
Thanks

Ditto - but I'm going to wait too see if iDVD3 will work on my machine. (Blue & White with a G4 upgrade and a Pioneer DVD-RW installed)
iDVD2 works fine, but I'm worried Apple will start checking for actual machine model info and screw me out of it.

Final Cut Pro/Express (or iMovie for that matter) can care less about how long your project is. It's up to the DVD-Authoring software (or MPEG-2 compressors for that matter) to determine how much compression to apply and, thus, how much they will fit on a single DVD. I don't see anything saying that iDVD3 offers more than 90 min's so I'd asume that's it. Now DVD Studio Pro may allow more, but it's not $49 either! :-/

FCP and FCE have zilch to do w/making DVDs. DVDSP allows you to squeeze longer movies onto the DVDs, and it does that by allowing you to better control the compression process. I know there are VBR (variable bit rate) compressors for MP3s, and getting something like that for iDVD would be great, but I think that tech is currently beyond iDVDs price point.

allas, if you need more than 90 minures DVD recording, DVDSP is it @ $999, and then you need Photoshop/Illustrator etc... to make your menus etc,.

If I had a SuperDrive, I would.
Since I don't, and no plans to buy one seperately, no.
I will download the downloadable components.

Same here. I don't have a superdrive but if I did I would certainly buy it. However I will be buying a superdrive equipped mac verrrry soon. Just waiting on the new release of the iMac and pMac to compare prices/speeds. (But it WILL have a superdrive!)

How could new features in iPhoto "require" the new iDVD?

Its just a hunch, but the the new iPhoto is supposed to (according to Steve) support archiving to CD and DVD.
I could see them integrating the two, but this is just a guess, and I am in no way informed on these matters.

I doubt it, you can burn DVD's now without iDVD using the finder DVD burning software. iDVD only comes into play if you are trying to make a DVD that will play on your TV (via a DVD player)
That makes me think of another, off topic, question: is there a way to tell OS X to use a different hard drive for the temporary CD/DVD volume that is builds before burning the disk? I hate that I have to have 700+MB available on my system drive just to burn CD's. (or 4.7GB for a DVD-R!) I always use Toast to avoid that problem now.

I stopped into the Hurst, TX CompUSA today and asked the Apple Rep if he knew if iDVD3 would work on my upgraded Blue & White PMac. He said that my running iDVD2 on it was, techniacaly "breaking the rules" anyway and that he wasn't allowed to even comment on it beyond the fact that it is for Mac's that came with Superdrives.
The best I could do would be to buy it and if iDVD3 didn't work that I've at least got all of the other apps.
I then said, "Well, I guess that means that bringing my machine in and asking to install it there before I paid for it is completely out of the question."
"Yeah.", he responded.
Well, I'm not shelling out $50 for 3 app's I can download for free. Untill I hear from someone else who's tried it, (and gotten it to work) on an "unsupported Mac" I'm not buying iLife either.
I really think Apple is being stuipid about iDVD. I'd be willing to pay $75 or so for it if it works on my user-installed DVD-R drive.
That all being said, I am hopefull that it will work since iDVD2 does.

Actually, I did squeeze a 150 minute movie on a DVD-R 4.7GB using DVDSP by reducing the MPEG-2 data rate, but picture quality does degrade! MPEG-2 is just not made for low bitrates.

I am close to going for DVDSP, as I just recently got Cleaner 6 for a song... and would like the ability to tweak the mpeg2 encoding more than iDVD will allow, which is zilch!
Also, Piano Joe, are you a US citizen/military in Germany? Or are you German citizen? I have a question if you're the latter...

i bought iLife for my blue and white G3 mac, thinkin since the box said G3 and G4 and this months copy of macworld showed how to do it, i would do it. well i got the Pioneer dvd rw drive and iLife, and when i installed iLife it says i am missing hardware, and the read before file says mim requirements is a G4, now why would they put G3 or G4 on outside of box and then say G4 after you install it. i am thinkin of headin to my apple store and yellin at them. this pisses me off. mac world says that the pioneer dvd drive i got is the same exact one as the apple superdrive. same exact one. and in fact thats what my mac says it is, apple supperdrive. pisses me off. grrrrrrrrrrrr
btw hi group. i am new here. hey eric, how did you get a copy of iDVD2 and if you can, maybe send me it. haha. i dunno anyone who has it...... so.........

It will have to wait until I can afford an upgrade from my old indigo iMac. Doesn't make a lot of sense on this machine. Although I'd have to say I'm envious.
