Does 1337 or "the elite speak" really have a purpose other than being an uber-annoyance to those over the age of 14?

You should actually add a poll option. And yes, it's annoying as all hell.

Its fun when used in mockery of those who do it. Its also fun at lan parties when you put your name in 1337-style. Lord of the Rings (http://www.onsdagspils.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=399) is also funny in 1337
Other than that, its pointless.

No. Neither does Chuck Norris.

I'm with the annoying brigade. What's the point of having an English language if we persist in bastardising it to the point of total reckless abandon.
It's not clever, it's not witty and it certainly is not 'cool'.
I understand the concept of SMS speak for texting, after all it serve's a valid purpose. To speed up communication on the go and to cut down the length and hence the cost of mobile communication.
But what purpose does this have? It takes longer to read, longer to write and more often than not makes no sense except to the original writer. A waste of time if there ever was one.

it's funny in tongue in cheek mode, but when people use it in serious text it makes them look retarded.
i cant stand shorthand, white trash should need to pass an english test before being allowed online...

When people are serious when they use it, I want to stab someone in the eye with a pen. Unforuntately, it's all too common on WoW. And now I'm blind.

Wasn't l33t orginally a way for players to communicate quickly on game servers? Seems like it's taken on a highly stylized mein. Kind of like dance, it started toausands of years ago as a way to party, and then over time it evolved into ballet. It's a highly specialized mode of speak that exists for no reason other than itself.

I was always under the impression leet speak was used by computer/gaming newbies and that no one with half a clue would use it. I guess if you are over the age of 17 and do it I think you are a complete tool.

I have always found l337 speak to be very interesting. In fact, I've used it as a topic in a presentation that I did for an upper division Linguistics class. What I've found (in condensed form) is that the major "purpose" for l337 in its current form, is to be an inclusion/exclusion tool. Like most slang, l337 allows members of the "in group" to feel more important in comparison to someone who does not speak l337. One reason that most l337 is considered to come from teenagers is that inclusion is a HUGE part of their existence and development. It is much the same as a clique at a high school.
As for why people hate it so much, I would have to say that it stems from both a dislike for the in-group style of politics that l337 stands for and an appreciation for Standard Written English. It could also be linked to a frustration with the stereotypical age group of the l337 d00dz.

1337 speak is nothing but a satire of itself. It was more back in the nineties when it truly was elite, but now it's an overused internet joke.

I'm ashamed that we let this topic actually creep into the minds and lectures of our higher learned campuses. But as long as it already has done so, may I congratulate you on a very deep and complete, yet brief synopsis into the inter-workings of the 1337.

Interesting stuff. Hopefully, the in-group will later found out that the out-group doesn't care about not being in the in-group.
Hence, it's hopeless using 1337-speak here kiddies. The occasional pwns and n00b accepted where appropriate. :D
Plus, it's a pain in the a-double using 1337 without a keypad (French keyboard's numbers are accessed using the shift key; no keypad on an iBook).

Hey, Apple themselves used "pwns" on a web page last year, so it must be OK. (Though it was changed after maybe a couple of days, so I guess Apple aren't really l337 after all....)

I think vB needs an automated "elite" detection and instant banning system.
