Could this mean 12" MacBooks are coming?

ooh boy i hope so. I wonder if it's 12/13" macbook pros or macbooks (ibooks) that are coming.

btw, I really hope they keep the ibook name... it's a classic, and sounds way better than "macbook."

These are not the latest revisions, it's not surprising they're liquidating older models.

Yes, these ARE the last revision 12" PBs. Last update was 1/05 and low-end had 1.5GHz G4, 60GB HD and a combo-drive. Retailed last year for $1399 last year I believe. Apple just recently dropped this low-end model on their site for sale, but the specs for CPU/RAM/Video remains the same.

Combo drive is somewhat of a let-down though, even though this is a good price.

wow. At that price, I may have to find some extra $$ much sooner than this summer. Under $1100 for a Powerbook is a great price. That's at least $400 off the current Apple store price.

Of course, the current listing at the Apple store shows the $1499 model comes with the Superdrive and an 80gb drive, vs. the CompUSA listed model is the Combo drive and 60gb drive.

Still, not a bad trade off in saving $400.

Wasn't the last update in October when Apple started shipping all stock 12" PBs with a SuperDrive and a 80GB HD?

Well, they're probably the same revision. Apple simply dropped the combodrive/60GB model, but all the other specs are the same.

Right, if you consider that an update. All it really meant was dropping the low end model (and cutting a little off the price of the now-stock model?).

So these powerbooks are an old model in the sense that apple no longer sells a 12" PB with combo and 60 GB. They are not really any different from the ones for sale by apple, but given that they are no longer in production (and haven't been since october), I guess it's really not a sign of intel 'books to come. :(

Stop a second... Re-read what you typed here and think for a second. These PB's are no longer in production. Existing SD equiped 12" PB's are no longer being produced as well..

How is this NOT a sign of new intel books to come?!

You can also get the *Superdrive* model (that apple still sells) at Amazon, for $1250 after rebate.

Not too bad, but when compared to the model at CompUSA, that's an extra $150 for the Superdrive option. And unlike the 15" and 17" models, the Superdrive on the 12" doesn't support Dual layer.

What do you mean -- isn't the Superdrive on the 12" the UJ-845, same one that is on the iBook 1.42ghz? I thought that was Dual Layer?

According to the tech specs on Apple's site for the 12" model, it doesn't list the DL, compared to the 15" and 17" models where the DL signifier is listed.

$150 for superdrive AND 20 extra GBs. Plus the superdrive and extra hard drive really helps resale value, when you want to upgrade.

I didn't factor in the resale value with my pevious post. Makes sense.

My understanding is that both 12" and 17" powerbooks continue to be produced and that only the 15" is EOL/clearing out inventory. Am I wrong?

But even if the 12" w/ SD is out of production, my point stands. The combo drive model on sale here went out of production several months ago. Therefore, it makes sense to be clearing this inventory regardless of whether it's the PB G4 12" w/ SD or new intel 'books that are currently in production.

Hey powerbook 911 what are the specs on your 12" PB's Superdrive? Is it a UJ845 Matshitua? (Pull down specs off the About This Mac and go to optical drive) Thanks

It is UJ-835E

Not sure what you're looking for, in the model of the superdrive. I've burned a lot of disks though. DVDs and CDs. Always works great.

This Powerbook is my favorite computer ever. My Core Duo is certainly faster, but this 12-inch Pbook is my favorite computer ever.

Can anyone confirm for certain that this is the latest model with the HD screen?

I was planning to grab a mini in the near future and max it out on ram, etc., but this might just prove to be a better machine for my needs.

And the CompUSAs here in Charlotte are out-of-stock already. Looks like they stopped getting these in a while back and are now pushing the rest out the door.

Good reason not to worry about it. i do remember that now that you mention it, only the 15 and 17 got updated screens.

So i take it from the link provided in CanadaRAM's post that these 12" CompUSA Powerbooks *could* be used. Anyone else purchase one of these?

Im in a position now where Im thinking about getting a 12 pb rather than saving up for an mbp...ir wait for a new iBook. I was in my local apple store today and checked the 12 inch powerbooks out...theyre so much nicer then the current iBooks...the screen is just so much brighter IMO. And the build-quality, it feels different..

When I posted, it was still at the $1299 - $150 - $1150. It is now back to $1449 before rebate. Looks like it was a mistake during most of today, but lucky for those who got it.

They've had some wild price fluctuations on those in the past couple of days. Thursday evening they were $1,399.99 on Amazon before the rebate. Then early this morning my girlfriend ordered one while they were $1,299.99 (before the $150 rebate, $1,149.99 after) and her order did indeed go through for that price. By late this afternoon however they were back up to $1,449.99. So they've had 3 different prices listed for them in just the last 24 hours! As often as Amazon changes prices, you should keep your eyes on it because it could always drop again by tomorrow.

 Well, it looks like CompUSA near me is completely sold out and Amazon's prices having't dropped again. I was ready to buy one today/tomorrow, but I guess it'll have to wait.

If anyone sees a similar deal and is willing to give me a heads up, I'd really appreciate it!!

Thats a good price, but the cheapest I've seen them for on the refurb site is $1099. No matter really, I found a used one in MINT condition for $900 (with a combo drive, but...). By the time I add in the tax (~$85) and the price for the extra ram that mine came with (~$150) its up over $1200, which is more than mine will end up costing even after I put applecare on it.

Thanks for the heads up though!

That's a good price, matching a new iBook G4.
