High Ping?

Im researching this for my brother.. a big gamer (pc). lately he has been complaining a lot that he is being kicked from many servers due to his high ping.. we never used to have a high ping, and are on a cable modem. We are not downloading anything.. How can we fix this all of a sudden high ping?

Could be lots of different things, but you can start by asking yourself what may have changed around the time your ping increased. New router? New OS version? Installed extra software? New ISP? etc.
