I'm stuck between a:
250GB OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro 7200RPM FireWire 800/400+USB2 Combo Solution
and:
LaCie d2 Hard Drive Extreme with Triple Interface 250GB - 7200RPM

Please tell me your opinion on which drive to purchase.

the lacie d2 - i have one, it looks nice and has been no problem so far after a year and a half!

I'm surprised others haven't chimed in to tell you to build one yourself....

Anyway, add my vote for a LaCie. I have four of them, and a mini desk rack, and they're beautiful.

Others have had problems with them, I haven't.

FWIW, though, OWC is one of my favorite places to buy things from, so I don't think you can go wrong with them, either.

plus also an added benefit of the lacie - you can play a tune by tapping on its case :D it makes quite a pleasant noise!

it is more than good, its quite amusing! well it is when you are sad and bored like me! but i must say it does make a good noise :D

i hope the lacie gives you good service, because if it doesnt its not my fault :D

Circuit City is having a Sale on their 300GB Seagate HD's. Usually 199.99-20.00 instant savings= 179.99- 80.00 mail in rebate = 99.99 for a 300GB Segate, this applies to Instore and Online orders. Then I went and got a AMS Venus D3 Firewire/USB2.0, and I like it very much so far that was 52.00 at Outpost.com. Can't really beat that I don't think.

Thanks, but I also need FW800. An enclosure with fw800/usb isn't too cheap. Does anyone else have any input?

What about the WiebeTECH UltraGB+ (http://www.wiebetech.com/products/ultragbplus.php) (or FW800 - well reviewed (http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/wiebetech/)) or the Macpower Pleiades (http://www.macpower.com.tw/products/hdd3/pleiades/pd_800plus)?

You'll be happy with the LaCie drive. I've got the same one and its great. Looks great on the desk too, matches PBs, MacBooks, or Powermacs.

I'm glad there are a lot of positive comments on the Lacie D2 triple interface

I bought the 300gig

and it is fantastic. firewire 800 is blazing, and it looks cool, and sets up so easy.

After I bought it, I went onto Amazon and read all these horrible reviews about it, so I was kind os warry about my new HD, but it's been going strong for a few months now.

I transfered my whole 120 gig iTunes library to it and it didn't even hic up...took about 45 minutes.

Get the Lacie...

The amazon.com and apple.com reviews are the only things making the choice hard.. :confused:

I've heard both good and bad about the Lacie drive, but havn't heard much about the OWC drive.

The Lacie should work with it. The Lacie I got gave me a few problems last night while backing up, but now it's working fine.

I have Lacie d2s (160 GB and 250 GB) with triple interface. So far, they are working well, quietly. I am interested in getting larger drives in the future, like a 500 GB and up. I heard Lacie's 500 GB (using 2 platters) have been getting some complains from consumers because those 2 platter set up tends to fail prematurely compared to their single platter mode (ie. less than 300 GB drive).

I am interested in Lacie's Big Disk 500 GB drive (I saw at Apple store at about $360). But, I am hesitating to get that one because I am concerned about higher likelihood of drive failures. Any comment on this?

I must say I'm amazed at how many problems a lot of folks have with external hard drives. I admit, it scares me a bit. I'm so spoiled with OSX. Usually just plug and play (except for printers, but that's another story). I would like to use Backup 3.1 to back up iPhoto and iTunes. It will only be about 3+ gig. Not a lot of back up. Maybe a DVD back up would be easier.

I have had my external LaCie HD for the past 2 years and it works great, I have never had any issues with it. So my vote would be to get the La Cie drive.

So far so good. I was able partition it into 6 segments with no problem and I have clone the laptops to their own separate partitions. I wanted to see how booting from it would do so I booted the 12"PB from the 15"Pb's clone. At that point I thought about cloning the 15 to the 12 but I've decided to wait for a few days just to get the bugs out if there are any on the 12 (New RAM and Airport Extreme card added last week.)

I have an 80GB LaCie that says it was created in October 2002, but the oldest files I can find on it are from August 2003. So far it has been a great drive. I used it mainly for large video projects with the old 15"PB (it only has a 10GB internal HD).

I have a 60GB Maxtor sitting around that crashed. It is the only HD that I have had any problems with (not counting the Western Digital 10GB that fell off of my son's desk... it's also the oldest External HD I have.)

Strangely enough, every external I have purchased since 1999 starting with the 10GB WD was in the $300 range. 10GB, 30GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB,120GB and now the 500GB (I know, big jump in size this time). Go figure. The cost per GB has come down but the cost of a "new device" has stayed about the same.
