Description:: The morning of Tuesday, Feb. 21, Apple Legal served AppleKeynotes.com with a notice to shut down, or else. Well, maybe not “or else,” but the group of Mac fans who started the site closed it down without a moment’s hesitation.

you get this message (see attached).
While I think it would be cool if Apple allowed streaming of more of their past events, they make it clear from the get-go of what you can and cannot do with their video streams.

That's a bummer- isn't this the site that was started only recently by some of the guys around here?
Posting old Keynote Addresses seems harmless-

I'm hoping for current ones too. It would be in Apple's interested to sell them on the iTMS (along with streaming). Curious people will stream, but I'm betting a lot of fans would pay to have it on their iPod/computer.

Would that be the only reason to prohibit others from distributing them for free? This seems silly to me personally, feels like another way to make a quick buck.

I think that this is a way for Apple to make a buck of two.

True, it was conceived by XIII, I donated the hosting and helped with wordpress, and two other members (usernames slip me) helped also.

Yes it was started by me, XII, amacgenius, and littleking. It was only really going for about a week before Apple found us. Oh well, it was really fun while it lasted and by the end of the week we were only missing 5 major keynotes since Steve returned in 1997 :) Of course, it wouldn't have been possible with out everyone helping to contribute. We really appreciated any help any of you gave us and hopefully tuesday they will put the keynotes on the itms.

Nobody in their right mind would pay for an old keynote. That is just crazy.

The real reason that Apple doesn't want old keynotes to be distributed is so that people won't scour them to find places where Steve has talked out of both sides of his mouth. Especially in regards to portable video, if they are soon to release a portable player and full length films in 4 days. :p

Now, a future keynote, that, I'd pay for!

if you type into google "some cool quicktime movies" then you will find a site that has some really old keynotes, for even older on (1894, when the machitosh was originaly relesed) look in the video podcast part of the iTunes music store and find a vlog called Mac Essentials - Video Podcast, it has some good clips there

1894? Wow, that goes waaaay back! ;)

Another, more probable, reason would be Apple trying to protect its copyright, which they have every right to.

Did the site have copies of the videos? Or just links to elsewhere?

They have a right to do that, but not an obligation like they would with trademarks. If they aren't intending to sell this material, it comes off as petty and mean for them to shut down the site.

The site had them all stored on the server.

I saw it coming; it was only a matter of time before Apple found 'em. I downloaded as many as I could while I still had time.

Apple really should put all the old keynotes on iTunes. I'm sure a lot of people would buy them, if they were reasonably priced. Especially if they put them up in good quality (h.264?) I have a lot of old ones that I wish were of better quality.

The site had copies... visitors to the site may still have many or all of the videos stored on external hard drives on my desk... opps, did I say that?

Wow, thats pretty harsh.
Unless Apple does have plans to sell them on iTunes. I would buy the ones im missing. Im learning a lot just from the style of presentation and slideshow that Steve uses.... for my own purposes.

People shouldn't forget copyright law. Apple HAVE to protect their copyrights or risk losing them. I'm sure Apple wouldn't want to lose their copyright on these keynotes so they only really had one option although it's a shame they couldn't have found some middle ground.

That's true for trademark, but copyright holders are free to be selective.
Once upon a time it was necessary in some countries for copyright holders to be careful to place notices on works, file reference copies, and keep registrations up to date. Those requirements are all long gone in countries that have signed onto the Bern Convention.

Now this got me thinking, if Apple shut us down after about 2 weeks of operation how come this site (http://www.esm.psu.edu/Faculty/Gray/movies.html) and this site (http://live.watchmactv.com/) have been around longer and are in essence doing the same thing we were?
That pisses me off.

Did Apple say in their nastygram what they didn't like, or was it one of those vague "our stuff" complaints? If anything, I would expect them to have issues with the domain name (two Apple trademarks in there) more than the videos.

Sorry if this is slightly off topic and it may make me look stupid but does anyone know what time the Keynote Presentation on the 28th will be?

Domain name, because of Apple and Keynotes, the image of Steve, the Apple logo, we need the disclaimer higher up the page, and the copyrighted videos.

Ugh, so they were kind of harping on the mark confusion angle. :( I think that's why similar archives manage to stay under the radar.

Yeah. I mean, we could try something separate with no name that is Apple copyrighted or anything, but we would be hard pressed to find hosts again.

I run macTV, and I maintain regular contact with Apple legal. They're fully aware of what we're doing and which videos are online. When they don't like something, they tell us and we remove it. It's as simple as that.

Well in that case, how do we get in touch with Apple Legal and ask their permission (PM me)?
