On 17 February, the USPTO recorded a trademark transfer from StorCard inc, to Apple Computer. Here is the assignment record. (http://assignments.uspto.gov/assignments/q?db=tm&qt=sno&reel=&frame=&sno=78116779)

The product known as StorPod up until now was this thing (http://www.storcard.com/products/pdf/MobilePersonalServer.pdf), a secure smart card reader (or "server" as they call it).

The trademark Apple acquired is for a "personal portable electronic device, namely a handheld personal computer for organizing, saving, securing, viewing, editing and transporting audio and video files, digital data, and personal information."

The current TARR status (http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&entry=78116779) shows that a cancellation was entered this past September, but given the just-completed transfer that is probably an artifact of the process.

It's not clear why Apple picked up this name. They may be intending to bring out a "StorPod" of their own, or the transfer could be part of resolving a dispute over the "iPod" mark, or Apple could be buying up part of StorCard.

[Edit: StorCard are apparently renaming their product to "MobileMedia Server (http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&entry=78804967)", so if Apple are using going to use the mark, it's not for the same product. ]

it's probably apples external storage solution. An ipod without the screen or buttons. 30-120 GB, FW 400/800/USB 2.0.

i hope its not the name for the new ipod.
