View Full Version : Crazy plan: mac mini, dvi extension, and 20" Apple display - help??

So here's the plan:

Buy a mac mini and a 20" cinema display. Since the new mini has 5.1 support and front row with Bonjour, I want it by my TV. But I want to use my display in my study.

So...I want to put the mini in the livingroom, and run a DVI cable from it to my study (if I go up walls and through the attic, it could be about 40-50 feet).

I have been reading that the max for DVI is 5 feet, but stronger (optical) cables are avail and so are repeaters ($$$$). My question is:

Is this feasible? Will it cost waaaay to much? I have read that the signal will degrade after a while, but what if i'm not using the highest bandwidth? Since i'll be using the 20" display, I won't be up at HD bandwidth. Plus the mini and the 20" has dual link connectors. Will that mean longer cord lengths are possible? Can the card handle it (ie: does it push a strong enough signal to start with)?

Lastly, can BT work that far away (about 15 feet away through 2 walls)? I want to have no cords!!

Thanks a lot!
