MacIntouch (http://www.macintouch.com) reports one user having received their new iMac.

Also... This link (http://homepage.mac.com/jeffersonh/PhotoAlbum3.html) was submitted with pictures of the unpacking of someone's new iMac.

Wow, I kinda want one after looking at those pictures of the guy unpacking it. It just looks cool on his desk.

Then I remember it's only 1024x768 and I cool off again. If only they gave the option for a 17" LCD at 1280x1024 then I'd finally have the ideal upgrade for my Cube: close to 2x faster, Superdrive built in, and still pretty quiet. Oh well...

I place an order with MacConnection after I saw them quoting 7-14 days. They said that 700 or so were due on the 15th and 450 of those were sold so I guess I have 2 weeks of sleepless nights...

p.s. My local Apple store expected about 25 in very soon with 200+ people already on the waiting list.

Like everyone else I ordered my iMac after the keynote. Waiting for my "3-5 weeks" has been hell. So I went into my local Apple store and asked them if I could upgrade the shipping from ground to two day there, because I want it ASAP. They told me that starting today, Feb 1st, they are getting 6 macs a day. They call the first 6 people on thier list, but if all 6 people don't come in before they close, they will sell the remaining iMac's to you on the spot. So I canceled my online order, and bought it on the today. Get your iMac today. Try calling or visiting your local Apple store after 7pm and ask if everyone on the callback list has picked thier iMac's up. If not, ask them if you can buy one.

We ordered the new iMac from the Palo Alto store on January 7. The store called about noon today (2/1), and said we could pick it up. I am setting it up now and it is wonderful and gorgeous. We were told ours was the second iMac to leave the store.

Heard from a friend today that a local elem. school has ordered 15 of the new ones to be distributed. I've seen plenty of iMac labs, but can't imagine what it would look like with the new model.

BTW, hope to catch a glimpse of one tomorrow at the local store!

Is the iSub still an option on the new G4 iMac? If you goto http://www.apple.com/speakers it talks about the Pro Speakers but only in reference to the PowerMac G4. It mentions that you can use the iSub with the Pro Speakers. I'm guessing that you can also use the iSub with the Pro Speakers on the iMac G4? If so, sweet! I like the looks of the Pro Speakers better than the SoundSticks anyway.

Homepage.mac.com uses browser detection code that thinks that all versions of Navigator are the same, and can use layers. Netscape 6.2 can't use layers, but the code handed out to it does, so the photos won't display. It should be recoded to deliver the same code to Netscape 6.x that it delivers to IE.

Do you think that since I maxed out the RAM on the order form that they are taking longer or is it that I got an educational discount or are they just lying to me???

Usually Build To Order machines do take longer to ship. Does anyone know if they customize them at the factory (and thus ship straight from Taiwan) or do they customize somewhere in US and then ship? Just curious as I've never ordered a Build to Order machine from Apple yet.

Though...as people are posting these pictures of iMac G4s, I feel more and more tempted to go and buy one...

The machines currently being shipped are customized in Taiwan and are shipped from there by way of Alaska, then on to the individual addresses.

I ordered mine on 1/7 and it's currently waiting at the local FedEx location to be delivered to me on Monday morning. I would have had it by this morning but I had it sent to my office so I would be able to sign for it.

No, I also ordered mine on the 7th, about an hour after the keynote ended. I ordered the stock, high end machine, no build to order options at all, and my order status still says that it has not shipped. I'm actually quite upset about that, especially since people who ordered after me, and people who are just walking in to stores are getting them. Apple told me that the order is "ready at the dock" but has not shipped for some reason which they cannot give me. I'm assuming it's the Customs thing, but if people who ordered them on the 8th are getting shipment confirmations, something is defintely wrong.

I'm really surprised yours hasn't shipped at all. I didn't order until about 12 hours after the keynote address. Same configuration as yours. The planeload that mine went out on from Taiwan, which was apparently the second of two planes carrying iMacs for individual delivery, spent a whole day in Japan, then another day stuck in Alaska. The explanation for the delay in Alaska was a "regulatory agency delay" before the machines made it to customs. The first planeload didn't go through Japan, and breezed through customs in Alaska, and those iMacs were delivered on Friday or today all over the US. There shouldn't be any customs-related delay IN TAIWAN. Also, note that mine left Taiwan on 1/29, so yours should have had plenty of time to be shipped by now. I feel for you!

Perhaps,
(I like that word since my parents used it alot, just like saying 'low and beold')
It is really not the just the day we placed our orders but also the region of the country in which we live.

Or perhaps (thats twice now) when they cancelled out the orders and replaced them with the renamed orders there was not enough detail placed on the true order that they were placed.

Or we might find, low an behold, that the reason they renamed the macs was because they have a shipping order for each of the possible configurations with the base high end model shipping from one list, the base high end model with the airport card from a second list, the high end model with 768 of RAM without Airport card shipping from a third list etc...

I also ordered mine on Jan 7 at 1:59pm - Standard Config + airport card....

On 1/31, Apple sent me this message -

"We are very excited about the new iMac and the extraordinary response from our customers! We have started shipping the new iMacs to customers in the order they were received, and your iMac will be shipping within the next 7 business days."

Apple definitely does not ship in the order that they were received. They have to be batch building and shipping from what they have built.

Disappointing to say the least - but very typical of Apple.

After reading about people who ordered their iMac after I did receiving shipping confirmations from Apple that their iMac shipped, I called Apple to ask why mine still says that it hasn't shipped.

They told me that there is a delay in shipping and that no iMacs have shipped yet. (This is Sunday, Feb 3rd at 11:00 am!). After mentioning that people are posting pictures all over the web of their iMac that they just received, I was told that it probably wasn't true.

The thing that gets me is that they can't tell me anything at all except that it hasn't shipped, but it is ready to go and will go out withing the next 7 business days.

So, my question is:

Can someone who ordrered their computer from the Apple store on the 8th post here when they receive theirs so that I have some sort of ammo the next time I call Apple?

Mac in Touch web site
http://www.macintouch.com/
does state on their front page that someone has received their mac or it is listed as "shipped".

I ordered just minutes to hours after the release (800Mhz, no Airport, 768 RAM) and my order status is "not shipped"

I can confirm that the iSub should work with any Mac with built-in USB running OS X 10.1 or later (10.1 introduced some changes in the way USB audio is handled).

I've had an iSub connected to my G4 Cube for over a month now, and the sound combined with the Cube speakers is fantastic....I'm sure it'll sound just as great with the new iMac.

From what I've heard/observed, the Cube and Pro speakers are not as good as the Soundsticks' "stick" speakers...however, the iSub produces slightly better bass than the Soundsticks' subwoofer (they are NOT the same thing, despite their very similar appearances).

Anyone out there have the Soundsticks AND an iSub? Care to chime in with your thoughts? (sorry, I guess this is a bit off topic)

Last Tuesday. January 29, and the following day, I posted a few messages detailing my misadventures trying to get Apple to make good on shipping the 800 Mhz iMac I ordered at 2 p.m. EST on January 7. Although I've talked to supervisors at Apple nearly daily since the 30th, I've gotten no real information other than this morning: "Your Mac is packed and labeled and just waiting for Fedex pick-up, which should happen in 24-48 hours. There was some sort of difficulty, but we don't know what it was." Status is unchanged on OrderStatus, however.

Anyway, Apple did not meet its pledge that it would ship my iMac within 2-4 weeks. I really felt lousy this past weekend looking at pictures of folks' packing materials and new iMacs, knowing that they had ordered their Macs well after I did. Apple is unfair, but what else is new?

American slang, see also:

"Life is what happens while you are doing other things."

"You can't always get what you want....but if you try, sometimes.......you get what you need."

Basically: Do something else with your time. Yer thinking too much about "what if it doesn't get here?" and not enough about the rest of your life. Whatever you're ignoring while dealing with being frustrated with Apple probably needs your input. I garentee the iMac will be at your doorstep the minute you stop fussing over it.

I went to CompUSA yesterday and they had a G4 iMac set up (the only one they had) and it had the iSub hooked up to it. Sounds great! Actually that's what I noticed about it first, the incredible audio. That is until I saw the iSub and it still sounded great but atleast it explained it.

I am quoting someone else who contacted FedEx and that was their explanation. Personally, I don't think the holdup had anything whatsoever to do with the computers. Remember that the plane came from Japan and obviously had to have other things besides computers on it. So the FDA holdup before customs could have been for some other reason entirely. The first plane carrying iMacs that left Taiwan did not stop in Japan, and spent a very short time in Alaska. The computers from that flight arrived last Friday.

That may be, but the Superdrive is not an unknown product, and the first plane through there with iMacs on it didn't spend much time at all in Alaska. I would have expected a "hold" on the first machines, not a later group. Also, by the point that the production models were coming out of Taiwan, there were already iMacs in the Apple Stores and in some other resellers.

I am sure the FDA randomly inspects lots and it is likely that some of the iMacs are being held as a routine.

This still does not explain why my iMac has not been listed as shipped when I was a very early orderer though

I have to say that my good feelings about having already received my iMac are lessened by situations like yours, and you are obviously not alone in this. I can't figure any explanation at all for shipments to happen out of order or not at all.

I know a lot of people are waiting for their new iMac (I am as well). But lets all try to be patient.... Remember, we all ordered the worlds greatest computer, it is a new model, and they received 150,000 orders in the first three weeks.

I ordered mine on the 11th, and I do check status about twice a day. I can't wait to get it, but if it takes them another week or so to get it to me, I think I will live. Sure, they may be doing batches of "like" machines, so some people may get theirs out of order, but I am sure we will all have our machines soon. If people are receiving them, the list is growing shorter.

It shipped on 2-5 and it arrived today (2-7) at 11:28 a.m.

From my experience with the iPod, AirPort2, and now the new iMac; all of them were "delayed" by customs in Alaska.

But I still have a hard time to believe that I got it in 2 days!!!

Unbelievable!

I haven't openned the box yet and no I'm not crazy for waiting... I'm at work and haven't had a chance to mess with it.

I hope that it doesn't have the Logo defect...:(

:) :D :p

Are you kidding? Mine left Taiwan (finally) four days ago, and it (as far as I can tell) is STILL in Alaska, while Customs Agents sit there and play with it, I guess!

I keep hoping....

Anybody else receive a shipping notice that ordered on the 9th or after? (I have seen a few posts from the 8th.) I am trying to keep track as I ordered mine on the 11th.

I put my name on a *relatively* local Apple retail store (not Apple-
Apple store, just a dealer) waiting list... and having it shipping out of state. There's 30 people on the list so far and they're suppossed to get 46 in by February 25th... I'm #31, and I placed my order today.

I think some stores (including store.apple.com) having longer waiting lists than others.

i have a client whose imac is stuck in anchorage ak, enroute to california and the mail tracking service claims that there is an official reason for the delay...perhaps security due to 9-11

it is frustrating since he ordered the machine the day after it was announced at mwsf

i did finally see one at an apple store in person the the machine is better than expected and almost gave me that same feel as when i first saw the all in one imac in 1998...but nothing will match that machine's impact except for the the original mac or apple IIe

My "official" order date from the Apple Store is also the 11th. I contacted them earlier this week to ask about the progress. The guy I got ahold of must of been relatively senior, just because he had a lot of insight into what is going on. He mentioned that mine is in the "que" to be shipped no latter than Feb 28th... And since mine is being produced in TW, that it'll take about 3 days to get to me. Expect it no latter than March 3rd he said...

If anybody has gotten theirs and ordered late in the first week, like Jan 10th or 11th, please let us all know.

Thanks in advance...

I ordered on Jan. 11... and, it just arrived today (February 8)!! Exactly 4 weeks later -- they were estimating 2 - 4 weeks, and they just made it. Typical of Apple to deliver on the tail end of their estimate.

I'm so excited, I'm shaking! It is simply beautiful...

Glad some people who ordered late in the first week are starting to receive them. The guy I talked to today was hoping that mine would ship next week, but told me to plan on 10 days at the most.... If people are getting theirs, mine may just make it next week.

I posted this already on another thread, but there has been a slow down on production, no idea why, another poster mentioned a possible shortage of LCD's.

Keep the news comming!!!

I can't wait! I am guessing mine will arrive on Thursday, according to FedEx, it is at the airport in Taiwan, but missed to pickup time. So it won't head to Alaska until tomorrow. I can wait that long, it is on its way!!!!

I'm getting very depressed.

Since I'm a college teaching type I ordered mine through the college Apple store. The order went in on the 10th and to my knowledge it has not shipped yet.

I try not to pester the manager more than once a week to check on it, but I still think I'm driving him nuts.

Has anyone ordering "academic" recieved their baby yet?

I am just going to wait till late fall or early winter to get one. First off I have to get my new iBook paid for first and then when I do buy a new iMac, they will be in stock at my Apple dealer and I will be able to walk out with it the day of purchase. There is NO WAY I could last as long as you guys could with something on order...do you know how painful ordering something is and then having to wait and wait for it?? I CAN'T DO IT!hehe By then the machine should have a few upgrades as well so that is why I am just going to get by with what I have for the next 9-12 mos. Hey I bet you guys are going to love your new iMacs...anyone posting on here with one?

As I've mentioned previously, I ordered mine on Jan 11th. It was received by FedEx in TW on Feb 11th and actually left the country on Feb 13th (FedEx said it had something to do with a national holiday). From TW the package went to Anchorage, where it stayed another 3 days waiting on customs. Anchorage to Memphis, Memphis to Phoenix, and now, the package is less than 20 miles away on the ramp at Phoenix Sky Harbor... Called FedEx to see if I could pick it up tomorrow, given all the delays. I must of gotten a hold of "Mr Bureaucrat" because all he could do was recite the FedEx policy that supposedly doesn't allow me to pick up the package from the FedEx facility (3 times). To top it off, according to "Mr Bureaucrat" my package will not be delivered until Tuesday... So much for paying extra to get overnight shipping...

At least my iMac is in the same time zone...

They started shipping the day they were announced.. CompUSA here in Indianapolis has had them for almost two weeks, and they still haven't got any iMacs (other than the display machine) Of course, if you add the GeForce 4Ti then it will still be another month or two. (My bet is more like 2 months to 10 weeks)

First let me say that this is not an attack on you, or anyone else that has cancelled their iMac order and gone with a tower... (One of my customers did the same last week.. he'll have his tower tomorrow) But I am curious.. what do you do with your computers that make towers and iMacs interchangable? For me, the only thing that really made the iMac unacceptable as my main computer (I will still pick one up, I am sure, in a revision or so) is the fixed-size screen. I am very curious if you feel like you changed your mind about what you wanted from the computer, or if you feel like you "settled" for a machine that wasn't what you really wanted.

This is the depressed academic. My Husband and I had been saving for a new computer and were hoping for some price cuts on the G4 line at the Expo. The cuts didn't come, but feature for feature the iMac was a great deal.

Then a few weeks later the price cuts came on the G4. When it appeared that the iMac was immediately on the way we decided to stay with what we had ordered.

But with the date getting pushed back and pushed back and some pressing matters that are sort of waiting for the new computer we decided to change the order. We'll get it sooner and get some money refunded.

I think that Hubby wanted the G4 but got a bit swept into hype and settled for the iMac. I think he's happier-and he'll be primary user.

Thanks for asking, and for the polite tone of your question. Its nice to see manners on discussion lists!

Sorry to see that you gave up on the iMac and went for a tower, but I don't expect that you will be disapointed in your purchase!

I am finally using my new iMac, and like everyone else, I LOVE IT!!!!

It was hard waiting for Apple, and then the FedEx delays, but it is here!

Shipped on the 11th of February,

Arrived today, the 18th of February.....

Worth the wait!!!! (It was tough though!!)

I ordered my computer on 1/13...
It shipped on 2/17
I got it today 2/19 (Taiwan > Anchorage > Memphis > El Paso)
Just over 5 weeks wait (definitely worth it, though it seemed like 5 months)
The only thing I got custom was the 512 MB single chip (empty user slot)...
I'm in love...

I ordered on the 14th and received it this morning. It came from Taiwan via Alaska in two days flat--looks like the regulatory bottleneck has loosened. I was so excited. Opened it up at work, plugged it in, and DaWWWW--dead pixel glaring at me with its one bad eye. Oh well, I waited on the thing five weeks and put it to work immediately. I can't spare the time to wait on another one. I'm hoping maybe when I get less busy in a couple of months I can take it to my local apple store (here in Columbus) and they'll warranty the screen. Does anybody have any experience dealing with apple on this sort of thing? I know a dead pixel here and there is considered part of the natural aging process of an LCD, but not right out of the box, huh?

Feb 20, 2002, 09:11 AM
Well I ordered my new imac on jan 13th. I was a windows user whose computer had just died....... I bought a imac 700 snow that same day with the intention of giving it to my 9 year old son when my flat screem imac came in. Well when apple lowered the prices on the g4 towers we decided not to wait. We are now the proud owners of a new g4 tower, 1 gig ram, and a 17 inch apple display. Am I sorry? Hell no!!!!! This thing rocks. As a lifelong wintel user and builder I am happy as happy can be. All my customers come to my house for repairs/new systems and get real mad when the see the apple display on my desk in the family room. I guess when word gets around I will start losing customers. Oh well I just did it for fun anyway.......

Snap! ...... I got a dead pixel too. Right out of the box! I was told that 1 dead pixel is nothing and that it is not classed as a manufacturing fault unless there are 10 or more dead pixels.

I can't really notice it that much, but is it likely that more may go?

Phaedrus
Feb 20, 2002, 04:31 PM
By last night (end of first day out of the box) a second pixel showed itself untrue. It's quite noticable, but choosing the right desktop pattern to disguise it helps. According to Apple's online support pages, dead pixels are an invevitable consequence of keeping LCD's affordable. If they harvested only LCD's with perfect pixels, prices would double, blah, blah, blah. I'm sure this is true, it's just a tough pill to swallow when you've just forked over 2k after waiting over a month. Anyway, the support pages go on to say that if you think that your LCD contains an inordinate concentration of dead pixels (it does not specify a number) then you should take it to an Apple service center for evaluation. I don't plan on doing this--not with only two dead pixels (not contiguous ones, either). It's just a reminder to me that nothing's perfect. That when great designs are instantiated, they become sucseptible to mechanical laws and failure probabilities. In the future, however, I probably will never purchase another LCD without seeing it turned on first, and inspecting it for the little buggers. So much for the Apple store (online) ever getting my business again on a monitor purchase.

OK, I want to get some perspective here. I'm not bitter about this purchase. There's nothing functionally debilitating about a couple of dead pixels. I put the new imac to work a soon as I got it out of the box and it's performing like a LITTLE CHAMP. I teach two classes in "solo performance" at a small liberal arts university here in Ohio. I've already edited and burned four DVD's of my students' performances (55 in all) on the new imac, which I'll use tomorrow when I meet with them individually to help them improve their performance skills. The imac is sitting on my desk next to my cinema display. The cinema display is powered by a QS 733 which is behind me and to my right (thanks to Dr. Bott's 10' ADC extension cable). The imac is sort of like the QS's little digital buddy. I was able to do all my other work on the QS last night while the imac churned away on two hours of digital video, compressing and burning DVD's for me.

Woo-hoo! Mine finally left Taiwan this morning. I have my fingers crossed it will get here Friday (what better excuse to skip class?) but I think Saturday is a safer bet.

Anyway, now I'm all skeched out about this dead pixel issue. Are they horribly noticeable? Like, if you're typing a document, does it look like an extra period sitting there?

This is my first Mac, so I've kind of got my hopes set high!

islygon
Feb 20, 2002, 09:29 PM
Dead pixels are a possibilty, but they are fairly rare. I have had them on laptop screens (non apple). My iMac does not have one, and I am happy about that!

Funny thing was, my iMac DV 400 CRT had a dead pixel for about 3 months??? Weird. I did not notice it much while working.

Those of you that have them, search the web, there are ways to POSSIBLY get them to come back to life. I have heard of one, rub the screen softly with a cloth (like the one that came with the iMac!) around the dead pixel. I am not exactly sure what this does, but several people who bought PowerBooks G4's when they came out did this, and it fixed their screen. Their may be other things to try as well.

BEHOLD - the Grail cometh - yea, even unto Canada: the snowball has landed!

Doing first day display model duty at the local comp. store, the great and powerful OZ - I mean IMAC - elicited more than mere oohs, ahhs, and slap my thigh "dang, if that ain't the cutest darn pogo stick I ever seen" superlatives. This is gospel, dear brethren: did not one of the bowers and scrapers before our ICON - I mean IMAC - offer not praise - but MONEY?!!! How much you might ask? To the salesman, this cuejumper asked that very question. "Why, you can take it away (in 2 weeks, or maybe 6 months) for $2,899" (800 mhz price in our depressed currency). But no, said he, I want it now - will you take $8,000? (Great! only $10/mhz!)

What is happening? Our igod has forsaken us! This snowcone has melted our brains.

Please - go install some software and talk amongst yourselves.

I've had them on a couple of G3 PowerBooks - none on the G4 PowerBooks yet.

Have you tried the ol' "massaging the pixel trick"? It actually works most of the time;

Gently (very gently) 'massage' the area around the pixel with the tip of your index finger (no fingernail!). I don't know why but this has worked for me before - although the dead pixel usu. comes back after a while.

A couple dead pixels are within specs for all manufacturers; Sony won't replace a screen unless it has 5 (!). Even so, if the massage didn't work, I'd call the reseller or call Apple and ask for an exchange.

I'm typing this on my brand-new 800MHz G4 iMac with Superdrive! :D I placed my order on 24 January, it shipped on 20 February and I received it today, 21 February! I have no idea how it goy here this fast, but I'm not going to argue - I just had it shipped via FedEx ground, nothing special. I ordered it from the Apple Education Store with no extras like RAM (although I did put in an extra 256 MB myself). This thing is freakin' awesome! So long 3.5 years of using a PC (I've been a Mac guy since 1985, when I was four years old, but at college I've had to have a PC - long story)!! Good luck everyone else!

There's something I just want to talk about.... 144pin Ram... the one in the new iMac.. that one is much more expensive than the 166pin (the most common one ) Does anyone knows why Apple put that kind of memory??? This just pissing me off... anyway ..
