View Full Version : Do you like the return key on UK macs?

I'd always wondered why the return key is different in the UK from the US macs. A question in another forum made me wonder if anyone actually likes it. I don't. The UK return is tall and thin and I never press the top of it, but I frequently press the \ instead. Can't think of any reason for it to be this way here but not in the US. Think I'll buy my next mac over there!

I tried to include a picture but haven't done that before, and it didn't show. I'll send it again if someone will tell me how.

I"m afraid your picture doesn't show up as it's still on your desktop - if you go to www.ImageShack.us you can upload it there (copy and paste the code for "Forums 1" (it will begin with [IMG]), or if it isn't too big you can attach it using the "Manage Attachments" button underneath where you type or edit your post. Hope that helps!

As for the return key, I've never used a US keyboard so I don't know what it's like to use. But I saw a picture of one today, and it looks much neater and more symmetrical, and so I would like it for that reason if nothing else!

Thanks, Lau. Did a quick edit on the last message when the code, but no picture turned up. Here's try number two.

That looks quite odd. Why is the keyboard so different?

I've got a US-born Power Mac and it having always used British keyboards it took me a little while to get used to the American-style return key (I kept missing it and hitting the '\' instead :o ). Can't really say I prefer one style over the other, though – the difference isn't really that great.

My mother has a US iBook and it took me a while to figure out why I kept hitting the \ key on hers...:o

I imagine if I moved to a US style keyboard I'd have real trouble adjusting to the smaller key. I always refer to it as the Enter key anyway, is that wrong?

On the full sized Apple keyboards its just a bit wider... and I like it that way. More room for me to hit, and less misses. :p

I'd always wondered why the return key is different in the UK from the US macs.Actually, looking at this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout) it seems that it's the US that is 'thinking different' when it comes to the return key. All the other languages seem to be using the larger, UK-style return.

That's interesting. Haven't seen that before. As someone who types with the fingers on the home keys, though, I do think that the US have a better design because then the little finger doesn't have to be stretched out so far to reach the return key. Hence the likelihood of fewer \\\\\s!
