A good enough Photo editing software?

hi.
What is the best app for normal photo editing. I have a 5 MP Sony Cybershot. I am creating a catalouge of my products(Artificial ceilings). I just want to change the bacground in the photos, add some info and may be adjust a little brightness or contrast etc. Thats it. Not much else.
Price is a factor but not at the cost of ease of use.

Photoshop elements. Iphoto will do in a pinch, but it's not going to allow you to selectively edit backgrounds.
