I'm just trying to install 10.4.2 on my old G4 quicksilver dual 800.
it doesn't work. I always get the message "this software cannot be installed on this computer".

the install-dvd came with my new G5. is that the problem? is the G5-installation not compatible with G4??

Try installing via firewire target disk mode

Yeah, the cd's that come with a computer aren't the same as the dvd you buy in a retail store/online. Those can be used on any computer you need to upgrade (obviously - and legally only one). The one's that come with the computer are only to fix any problems/reinstall the OS to the computer they came along with.

while metalgearmac's suggestion would probably work, I question the legality, considering OEM copies of the OS must stay with the machine they shipped on *tick* sorry, slipped into Microsoft Land for a sec. Still, Apple's license is basically the same thing...
