Free web hosting(*ducks*)

Hey guys,
Let me start of by saying I have run a search on this topic and I havent found many answers. I did however see ambitiouslemon.com offers free hosting but unfortunatley they shut that down due to lack of resources or due to the fact that too many people are signed up already. Anyway, I am looking for a good FREE hosting site where I can host my webpage. I would like it to have atleast 15MB becasue I will be hosting some images and some of my songs made in ableton/garageband. It would also be a plus if it was add free, so angelfire is already out. If they show your hits and statistics kind of like geocities it would be a plus aswell. Any recomendations?

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but in all honesty, free hosting isn't worth it anymore. Companies are selling packages for $1/month or less that get you 100MB or more...it's crazy. $12/year packages....$10/year, I see all kinds of cheap ones like that. These are from good companies too, most of the time.

There's a free hosting offer at MacGUI.com, they give pretty nice space, just be forwarned that they have access to your files and your passwords that you submit to them (un-Md5).

Um, they can log-in as you anywhere you have account on the internet provided you use the same password everywhere?

Well I assume they are a pretty big site/company so I doubt they will do that but Ill use a different password just in case.

Just use a different password than you use for everything else, or one that you've never used before.

They don't have encryption when you make a username/password it sounds like, meaning the owner can look at a list of all the clients and see their username and real password, where as most hosts don't have direct access to everyone's password. It's not really bad.

ugg, if your interested in free just use yahoo or something lame like that. If $12 is too much for you than your not too serious about being hosted.

i think youre misunderstanding him. he doesnt have acess to a credit card or paypal. neither do i. i can only get free webhosting or serve from my own mac mini using the actual ip adress, not a domainname, and i dont want attacks from putting the hd with all my personal stuff in the public domain. how enticing is a site called 75.xx.xxx.xxx.xx anyway?

Have you looked into the DynDNS (http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/) services? They provide free subdomains for both static and dynamic IPs.

Anyway, I had a bit of experience with www.freewebs.com and www.50megs.com and they are decent web hosts considering they are free but they have file size limitations and such. You can also go to http://www.freewebspace.net/ and search there for free hosts as they have bunch of them there.

Also in regard to passwords and web hosts, even when a web host encrypts passwords they still often have access to your password. Since most web applications (like a forum or blog software) require you to type your username and password into a config file the host could simply look at your config file and see your password. Since the config file isn't encrypted your password is accessible.

If you use ftp to access your account then your password and username is being sent across the internet in an unencrypted fashion. (sftp encrypts the password).

Another word of warning in terms of security is that many blogs have features where you can password protect entries. Those blog entries are not encrypted. So your host has access to all of those as well.

You need to remember that whatever you put on the internet should be considered something that is public. Since there is no total security you need to focus on making smart security decisions.

Some hosts will accept cheques, so find an inexpensive one in your country that does. Then you don't need any sort of online payment method.

Here's a suggestion: Ask your Mum whether she has ever made a donation to a charity over the phone using her credit card. If she says yes, then explain to her how much safer the internet is than doing that. If see says no, I'm not that stupid, then try educating her one how safe the internet is if there is a valid security certificate and you are dealing with a big processing company such as PayPal, WorldPay or 2Checkout. :)

Theoretically you could set up some sort of thing where you could buy a domain name (which would, 99% of the time, require a credit card as well) and have it point to your mac mini. Like have somewebsitename.com redirected to xx.xx.xx.xx.

And paypal requires a bank account, not necessarily a credit card. If you had a savings or checking account with a bank (wells fargo, bofa, citibank, whatever) you could transfer funds to it and all you need is the account and routing numbers (if the people at the bank can't tell ya, you can always call them up and ask for it)

Just to point out, that also requires a Static IP address, which, unless you pay extra for, is generally not provided with your high speed connection.
This means that every time you're forced to reconnect, you get a new IP address which may or may not even be similar. Upgrading to a Static IP address through my ISP is $14.95/month, more than just hosting alone.

Some services (I think DynDns.org does it) have a dynamic domain type service that would redirect a domain to your IP address. This is generally at least $30/year, so it would practically be worth it to add in an extra $20 and get some low-end hosting...

I was really interested in setting up my own server a few months ago, but I'm now adjusting to life without a personal website... :(

Yes, there is such thing as good free webhosting. I have been using teccion for a couple of years now, and I love them! No problems here! I've noticed major speed increases within the past couple of weeks because they have been upgrading some of their hardware and such.

Actually, to make it clear: I do not OWN Teccion. I do have significant power in the business, but it is far from mine. I have a friend who runs the site and servers, but I only aid in (yes, selling, publicity and getting people's opinions.) I dont make a cent from the site.

If you don't need to make your own template, google's pagecreater isn't bad. It give you 100MB of space, and it will actually be around in a few years. I just started using it this afternoon, and I have been pleased. Note-the creating software doesn't work with safari yet, so you'll need to download firefox.
