I figured I'd show some of my Photoshop skills. Most of these are old-ish. I've been using Photoshop since I was 12. I'm 19 now and very proficient with PS. Along with all these examples, all my websites are made in Photoshop first, then cut up for web.

Enjoy.

A personal mission statement ... it was for my writing class in High School, we had to do something "graphical" so I did. Most of the class was clip art, it was pretty awful.

I used to have a switchfoot fansite on shrimpdesign.com, it's offline now ... but I used to get pretty good traffic from switchfoot desktop pictures and live bootlegs (which might have been illegal).

Anyways, I selected a couple to put on flickr, but only the best ones.

http://static.flickr.com/55/112331845_6a5f727dda.jpg

http://static.flickr.com/47/112331571_257dd43947.jpg
This last one is very popular ... it was eating up my bandwidth. People still link to my Switchfoot desktops on their Xangas or LJs and it gets annoying.

In another forum we were having a discussion of what it would have been like to see the original Starship Enterprise entering space dock before being refit (to how it looked in the first movie).

With that in mind I set out to figure out what it may have looked like. And a few hours in Photoshop later I have these...

http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/trek_stuff/1701-dock-comparison.jpg

A larger version of the original Enterprise in the first shot. (http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/trek_stuff/1701-entering_dock_01.jpg)

A view from the front. (http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/trek_stuff/1701_dock_02.jpg)

http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/trek_stuff/1701_dock_side-sm.jpg
another version where I made the
Space Dock from scratch around
the Enterprise (http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/trek_stuff/1701_dock_side.jpg)

I also was wondering what it would have been like with Spock as Captain of the Enterprise...

http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/trek_stuff/capt_spock.jpg

But then it occurred to me that as a commander he would most likely have a tendency to micromanage.

http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/trek_stuff/capt_spock_2.jpg

As you can see, I happen to like Star Trek... and Photoshop. :D

Hi, thanks for the compliment...

sometimes the best images are the ones that take the fewest time (10 minutes on this occasion!) - it was a simple layer blend mode (screen i think - cant remember without looking) and a bit of dodging and burning.

Well, there's a vector shape in photoshop that I can blow up so big it looks like fans. I've attachted a pics of the shape.

All you have to do is use the direct selection tool (the white cursor) and select the inside or outside circle of this shape and move/resize them to create more depth. Then slap on a gradient, and make it huge so the outside circle is outside of the picture plane.

Nice work guys!! This is my first creation in my first college level Design Class, "Introduction to Digital Design". I took it at a Community College, we are very fortunate to have our Digital Design teacher be a certain charector. He's an awesome designer and a big inspiration for me, too bad he doesn't teach anything beyond that class.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y176/Moshiiii/AltophobiaTypeMR.jpg

* I took a 300dpi daytime photo of the view from the sears tower, converted it into a night-time photo by changing the levels.
* I added a black gradient arround the borders to create a sense of falling in.
* I scetched a man falling, scanned the image than inverted making the human white and background black. I made a copy of the man and put a motion blur on it to make it blurry yet solid.
* I took a 300dpi photo of a hand and added a glow to it. This hand to me represents the step program to get over the fear.

I made this DVD cover for a video I shot and edited for the high school musical production Pirates of Penzance earlier this year. There arent really any flashy effects, but I spent ALOT of time creating COB images and compositing all the different layers. I think it turned out really nice.

I rented a Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 lens and took all the photos myself with my Canon Digital Rebel XT. I spent way too much time on it, but it was worth it! :D

Well, there's a vector shape in photoshop that I can blow up so big it looks like fans. I've attachted a pics of the shape.

All you have to do is use the direct selection tool (the white cursor) and select the inside or outside circle of this shape and move/resize them to create more depth. Then slap on a gradient, and make it huge so the outside circle is outside of the picture plane.

i couldnt find "registration target 2"...can anyone help me out by sending it to me or giving me a link to download from? thanks a lot

EDIT: heres the dimensions

140 mm 80 mm 28 mm.
its the same as the ds lite is closed. but a little bigger.

i dont know where to put the power thing...that tells if the battery needs charge or not. but i tried to keep the speaker out of the way of the hand so you get a clearer sound. i also like the start and select buttons there because it kind of is like the SNES & NES, kinda like a spirit thing? i also left the nintendo font the same as the original. not like the DS font. since...its not a DS.

Inspired by AGoglanian's photograph in the Picture of the Day (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=204316&page=36) thread, I decided to give the same theme a go and came up with this:

http://static.flickr.com/56/186098519_085e971165.jpg

It's one of my first creations with PSE 4, and isn't much but I'm happy with it. It did take longer than I would've thought to erase the B&W from the body.

[EDIT] photo didn't seem to be loading onto Flickr so I looked up the info and found that the file is 16.3mb. Any ideas on how/where to host this photo so I can post it?

[EDIT 2] When saved as a .psd the file with 16.3mb but when saved as a .jpg it was only 2.6mb so I was able to get it loaded.

A simple tutorial about making the brushed surfaces, just like the wallpapers here: http://www.deviantart.com/view/36156745/

http://www.deviantart.com/view/36185801/

It doesn't contain sound, I'm having some problems with sound in SnapzProX, I'll update the tutorial when I'll get rid of the sound problems, but I think that tuto is so easy, that you'll understand everything even without the sound - just follow the white rabbit... I mean, black cursor ;)

The zip file is about 10mb.

Open the tuto with Quicktime - it's a .mov file ;)

Hope you like it and it will be helpful to ya! ;)

Please fav this tuto if you like it ;)

Thanks and have fun ;)

How much would you suggest on the desaturation? I was playing around with it and wouldn't want to go below -25. Also I was thinking or adding a slight blur to to the background and maybe adding color to the track.

Suggestions?

These are sort of Photoshop creations... and sort of not. :o

-WARNING-
math stuff ahead

I've always felt that the best way to get a good intuition for topological surfaces was to generate illustrations of them by hand(1). The final illustrations I end up with are the surfaces sliced into sections so you can also see what is happening inside. The idea is that the sections could be sewn together to make the complete surface(2).

Well, after taking all that time to actually create the illustrations, I had never taken the additional step of trying to bring the same pieces together... until now.

I took a number of illustrations I had drawn over the last few years and, in Photoshop, displayed both the original spread out sections and the sections brought close together.

So rather than take up room on the page displaying the new versions of the illustrations that I made in Photoshop, I'll just link to them for anyone who is interested. figure 1 (http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/math/figure_01_rp2.gif)
figure 2 (http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/math/figure_02_rp2.gif)
figure 3 (http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/math/figure_03_rp2.gif)
figure 4 (http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/math/figure_04_rp2.gif)
figure 5 (http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/math/figure_05_rp2.gif)
figure 6 (http://www.shawcomputing.net/racerx/math/figure_06_k2.gif)

(1) My drawings start out with contour (fold curve) diagrams, then producing level sets (which are associated with the slices), and followed by generating the actual surface sections between the level sets. I can then go back over the illustration and look for critical points to make sure that the surface I've drawn is actually the surface I had intended to draw... all of which is beyond what I would guess anyone would really care to know about.

(2) This technique is a little different than the one used by my professor (example (http://www.geom.uiuc.edu/docs/outreach/oi/Frames/phillips.gif) from here (http://www.geom.uiuc.edu/docs/outreach/oi/biblio.html#Phillips1966)) which looked at surface "bands" for each of the level sets. I like seeing the full surface personally.

But interesting drawings, RacerX. Was this out of boredom as mine were?I guess it would be more along the lines of a mental workout.

The type of visualization that I was doing back when I was in school was far more complex than what I have shown in the images I posted. But the general technique is the same so doing these drawings helps to keep me able to work with them.

I don't think anything I currently do either for a living (computer consulting and web design) or as a hobby (studying fringe computer platforms) is as mentally taxing (or rewarding) as when I was doing mathematics. And as I'm heading back to school this year to finish up (something I had meant to do long ago), I've been spending more and more time getting back up to speed on the research I was doing when I, well, took a break.

In my paper on Contour Diagrams and Regular Homotopy of Orientable Surfaces I showed a very complex deformation of a surface... which required 10 illustrations similar to those I posted to show the steps. Back then (1995) it took me four months to work out the steps of the deformation and then draw the surface at each step (that isn't counting the two months I lost when I made an error and had to start over).

But it is something I enjoy doing, though it can be pretty hard to do at times (trying to maintain a visualization of a complex surface in your head while also deforming it). Originally I started the drawings of them more as a way to check my work, but they also proved to be very good visual aids.

Sadly this type of illustration really can only be done with embeddings and immersions of surfaces (2-manifolds) in Euclidean 3-space. When working with higher dimensional manifolds mapped into higher dimensional Euclidean spaces, the ability to draw what you are thinking gets much harder. But the intuition that you build up in these lower dimensional examples is very helpful.

There are a number of good references for this type of visualization of mathematics. One good online source is a series of images on Conway's Zipper Proof (http://new.math.uiuc.edu/zipproof/conwaypng/).

Again, that is most likely more than most people wanted to know on the subject. :o

Allright, here is my latest Photoshop Creation.

I made this:

http://img336.imageshack.us/img336/1092/lakesidetn2.th.jpg (http://img336.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lakesidetn2.jpg)

Which, when cut and folded correctly, becomes this:

http://img461.imageshack.us/img461/5972/lakeside1xy3.th.jpg (http://img461.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lakeside1xy3.jpg)

A Cigarette Pack. Holds 20 Cigarettes, which is the standard here in Austria and most of the world.

I didn't include the Cut Layer, which would show where you cut and where you fold. It would also show that some of the top and bottom needed to be cut away.

The original Photoshop file is 12.09 cm x 26.79 cm (because I included the border) at 600 dpi. I guess Illustrator would have been more suited for this kind of task, but I don't have that.

There are two ways:

For a more computer rendered cloud making process go here (http://www.n-sane.net/tutorials/fluffy_realistic_clouds/index.php)

And for a more realistic, homemade set of clouds go here (http://www.lunacore.com/photoshop/tutorials/tut021.htm). I like this one the most. A little more time consuming but definitely worth it.

I recommend doing it one time with the tutorial and then try to do it again without using the tutorial so you'll be able to do these clouds without any assistance.

I believe it was photoshop creative, its a uk magazine and by the time i get it in the states, the news is a bit old, and i have to look up the exchange rate every time i read it. The tuts are still great and next issue they'll sow how to make a supernova.

I'm hoping someone can help me.

I have 3 iMixes that I created and play regularly. It's my favorite tunes from the 80s, 90s and today. I have created 3 different playlists in iTunes: '80s iMix, '90s iMix, and '00s iMix. If someone has spare time and like to play w/photoshop as a hobby or what-have-you...does anyone mind creating cover art for me with '80s iMix on it, one for '90s iMix and one for '00s iMix.

I was thinking that the backspash (if you will) of the album cover be different things from each decade. example for 80s, maybe incorporate pac-man and a lava lamp or something. and then different icon images for 90s for the '90s iMix and icon images for 00s for the '00s iMix.

i know this is a lot to ask and such. But, I thought someone might want to tackle this as a challenge. It certainly help me gain album art out of the playlists as well.

Thanks for the help in advance.

It's looking good, but I would change two things (only for my tastes):

- apply a transparent gradient on the scanlines so they're fading on an angle
- soften up the type (it's a bit too sharp to blend in)

Again, just for my tastes. :) It's looking good, though.

Again, just for my tastes. :) It's looking good, though.
THANK YOU! you know, I'm a PS noob, and I always wanted to gradient the scanlines. Now I know how.

No problem. :) I just remembered I never told you how to soften type in your PM. I'm not in front of Photoshop right now, but when you have your type selected, look in its options bar (top of the screen) and see if you can change its properties from Sharp to Soft. I'm not sure of the exact wording, but I hope it helps. I'll check it out when I get home later.

I think I know what you meant, I found something to make the font softer. PS calls it "smoothing" the type. I'm having translation problems when people give me PS advice, because I have the German version. It's a problem.

Anyway, here's the next one. Didn't get the gradient done (apparently no quick mask in PSE). Click for fullscreen. Whaddaya think?

Much better! :) I didn't know PSE does not have the Quick Mask mode. There has to be another way to make a transparent gradient of scanlines. I played around with the layer blending modes, but nothing looked good. Anyone know how to do this without using a mask? I have always done it this way, so I don't know of any other methods.

Thanks. The only thing I get on Q is the tool where you select different shapes, like the heart. This is really bothering me, I mean people said that PSE doesn't have all the functions of PS, but it seems to be really really slim.:(

Here is a billboard on melrose I did using photoshop

And also a Panorama of the grand canyon I did for my brother, if you notice his girfriend is at the very edge to the right side, I had to scale down the pic to about 45 inches long to print, but it can actually go way longer.

Looks quite vintage. Ahhh yes I remember the days of old where "MacBooks" were still fast... That's old-school.

Here is something I did for our youth group webpage. On our website (http://www.harvest-teens.org) they can click on the different pictures to go to the different websites. All three of the sites were done with Rapidweaver.

That is sick! I like the name. Halo 2 was the only game that took over me and I am looking forward to the third installment.

Thanks man. I love the name too. I got really sick of joining and leaving clans back when Halo 2 had clan matches in matchmaking so I will be creating this clan day one and staying in it forever. :D
