I won't be buying a new PowerMac, iMac, or LCD. But, if the iPod is updated, I will probably buy a 5 or 10 Gig.

I'd love to...but I just bought a powerbook.

Maybe when I get a job. Even then I'll probably get the PowerBook, I would have to get a really good job to spring for a PowerMac, although an iMac isn't completly out of the qustion.

im waiting for the 970 but that 20" screen does look very appealing especially at the low price! I remember when the 22inch cost like 4000+!

I'm still shocked by the realisation that OS 9 is dead!

I'm even more shocked by the fact apple have probably shot themselves in the foot by making the 20" LCD Mac OS X only. How many people would buy one of those if it worked in OS 9, or windows even ?

The entry level looks cool to me, there's finally a replacment for my 300Mhz G3 in the same range as my G3 was in and for the same price I paid for it that at 1GHz!

I wouldn't buy either of them even if I had the money, I'm wary of OS X, I don't know if I'm going to use it 100% of the time even when I get a mac that can handle it or at least upgrade my own mac to just about handle it.

I think I'll just upgrade my current mac, buy jaguar, see how PT 6 runs on it, then save up for a while and see what happens. I'm damned if I'm going to buy a mac that won't boot into OS 9 if it's still using the G4.

Nope. Not until my beige G3 dies...

See what happens when you make reliable hardware Apple?!

But I'm not really sure what.

My general thoughts are to "bridge" over the Motorola/IBM chip performance issues by picking up a laptop instead of a tower on this update cycle.

So in that catagory, I'm leaning towards a 12" Powerbook w/Superdrive & Airport/E. Comes in at a tad over $2K.

With the new PowerMac towers released this week, if I were to go this route, I'd probably go with the DP 1.25GHz w/Superdrive.

The overall prices for these two comes out about the same, so its a question of portability @ 867Mhz vs. performance @ DP 1.25GHz.

Considering that I'm currently working OS 9 @ 400MHz, I'd probably be happy with the lower power system and take the portability.

So in this regards, these new PowerMac towers aren't enough price/performance to convince me to stay with a desktop (like all of the Mac's that I've had for the past ~10 years).

And FWIW, before either of these systems were announced this month, I was contemplating dropping $1K for a stripped iBook, so Apple has been modestly successful in providing a better product such that I'm willing to spend more money.

Nice spec. One thing i would never do is upgrade the RAM via Apple. For 1GB ram you pay $250 extra, compared with $119 via crucial.com. I was going to say the same for the hard drive until i noticed that 120 was the smallest...

If there was an option of "Maybe later" for the poll that would probably have been my choice - the mid powermac is pretty tempting.

Just waiting for the iMac updates before making the switch from peecee land. Have to say that the price cuts that the rest of the range have been getting with this set of updates is making me hopeful they'll bring the 17"/Superdrive model into my price range - the current price (£1650) is a bit steep...

I am waiting on the iMac as well.

I think this survey should add the following disclaimer: are you old enough to have a job?

I just bought a couple of iMacs a couple of months ago, so I won't be buying anything new for a while - unless the economy gets better soon.
I am thinking of buying an iPod though.

Same here. Definitely holding my credit card out for a new DLD/revamped iPod. Hey, a man can dream, right?

Besides the fact that I don't have the cash for one of these - I'm still holding out for a DDR capable FSB chip. I don't care if it's a G4, G5, 970 or whatever - AltiVec is starved for memory bandwidth. I've been waiting for "real" DDR for 2 years now.

I'm waiting for a new "cube" with a PPC 970.

I'm glad I upgraded when I did (got the Dual MDD). I wouldn't be able to work without OS 9 at this time!

I priced out the low end (1 Ghz) model through Apple .edu pricing, figured it was quite affordable ("Only $15 a month with an Apple Loan!"), took the printout to the wife, and she said...

"That's nice... you're still not getting one."

Now, before you all go off on me, bear in mind that she's the one keeping the books, and she knows what we can and can't afford (mortgage and food being more important than shiny new Apple goodness). I'm just the one that keeps buying all the new toys :)

But I have to admit, the beige g3 w/ the g4 upgrade is running slower and slower with every Sims expansion she wants installed, so it'll happen someday :D

To buy in 2003:

1. iPod (wait and see...)

2. 12" PowerBook (rev. B) or the (new) 15" PowerBook

Are there any in store discounts available similar to the Pre-Order on the new PowerBook 12" & 17" ?

A lot of comments mention springing for a new iPod.

How certain are we that they are probably due yet another revamp?

I have an original 5 gig iPod, wouldn't mind having the 20 gig, but maybe something better is around the corner...

Otherwise, the comments don't seem terribly confident about another powermac redesign happening this year... I would figure the great majority of those saying no to this poll are waiting for a 970 (and for a fatter wallet in the meantime)

I still use a sawtooth g4... with a gig of RAM and a fast video card... it isn't bad. I'm not burning DVDs with it however. What nearly got an impulse purchase out of me is a flat screen iMac.... I still like slots though. Need the slots for gizmos.

I voted "no" simply because I don't have the money. That's not to say that a year from now I won't buy a 20" LCD, because I will! That and a G5 with a PPC 970 screaming inside. (Here's hoping...)

NO.

Want a new 15.x" PowerBook. If it is of the same style as the 12"/17"

That and wait for the ATI 9700 pro instead of the GF4. I don't know why they cost the same, the GF4 should drop at least another 50.

I didn't find the new line-up all that great. Still don't like that case and now that a single 1ghz chip is in it, you don't need a case like that. The new 12" powerbook , especially since it has taken me 2 years of "I'll just wait till the next upgrade, if I buy now it will be outdated in a week". When the new 15"s come out, I'll probably sell my 12 on ebay for about what I bought it for (1569), but I don't think I'll buy a powermac for a long while, I like the silence of a laptop.
