View Full Version : Geekfest 2003
Backtothemac

Well, some of you were around last year for this, but some where not. We held Geekfest 2002 in New Orleans LA. Only a couple of us showed up, me, Eyelikeart, and DukeStreet, along with Mrs.B2TM and DutchessStreet.
So, this year we are going to DC. Yep, the home of our country, and hopefully the home of all that party worthy ;)
Bring yourself, your Mac, and plenty of compact flash space for pictures. We will party, dine, and of course drop in the local AppleStore and post a bit ;)
So, RSVP Here, and we will start looking for hotels to stay at, and planning the festivities.
Mr. Anderson

Since b2tm made this official, you all should know that I'm going to be playing host (of sorts) since I'm local this time.
B2tm and eyelikeart were great in showing the wife and I around NOLA last year and we hope that we'll be able to do as good a job.
Depending on how things go, I'll even be hosting a bbq at my house one of the days, providing wireless access to the net through the cable modem - we have to get the geek factor up a bit here.
The 'plans' are still in the planning to plan stage, but there is so much to do and plenty of good eats, it should be a great time to actually meet some of the people here on the site.
We'll even try and convince arn and blakespot to show up (arn is in Richmond, a few hours away, and Blakespot is only a little over a mile from me in Old Town).

There are a couple of geek-houses here in the SC area that're mac-friendly and fully capable of doing parties.
www.circus.com
and
www.darkwater.com
'Circus has the most infamous parties in town and routinely hosts massive keggers. They have a T1, in-house wi-fi and a VERY large malamute to keep the peace.:D
Let me know when you want to do it and I'll talk to the respective head-geeks.
Mr. Anderson
Jan 29, 2003, 01:42 PM
Sounds interesting, but this would be Mac geeks mostly, not just geeks in general.
Besides, there is no way I could compete with that unless there were more people locally who would want to get involved....nudge, nudge, wink, wink, no what I mean......;)
So what about all the DC Metro area members?

There's a few folks scattered about the bay too... it could be quite a gathering. I know some Lurker Mac Geeks that'd show too. SC has quite a Mac community.
Mr. Anderson
Jan 29, 2003, 09:24 PM
If you guys can pull that off, that'd be great. But I was thinking that next year, 04, it should be a West Coast Geekfest. But maybe we'll start a tradition and have it on both coasts every year.
Get a little competition going even...
D

Jan 29, 2003, 09:42 PM
I don't know about having competing Geekfests, like someone said before, only a few members actually went last time, will only two people go to each Geekfest if there were two on seperate sides of the country?
This is getting confusing, first this years Geekfest will be on the east coast which is on the total opposite side of the country where I currently live and if everything works out in a few months, I'll be able to move back to OK which is closer to DC, but if I don't, then the next Geekfest will be where I moved from and I'm not making any sense at all am I?
Then there's still that job problem, anyone want to hire me? I'm getting desperate here.http://img.ranchoweb.com/images/veronica/rolleyes.gif

I think it's far too soon to be discussing next year, but since Geekfest was in New Orleans last year, and D.C. this year, I really think we should try for a west coast location next year.
Of course, it all depends on who is able to make it next year, and who's willing to host.

We've already talked about a San Diego Geekfest in 2004 - but lets not get off track here.
Surely there will be other people coming in for a visit, even if its just a day.

Great Falls is a fantastic place - I've been there dozens times and know quite a few places that are off the regular tour. It will be a good hike too - several miles if we do it right. And there are two sides, VA and MD. VA is more for famillies and picnics, MD has more interesting stuff.
We'd park down by the Old Angler's in and hike for while. If the weather is good it will be fantastic.
Arlington Cemetery is a must, Iwo Jima and the Netherlands Carillion for a great veiw of the Mall from across the river - lining up the Linclon Memorial and Washington Monument.
I'll check and see when the moon is going to be out. The moon rises over the capital and can be pretty damn cool if you get the right conditions.
Food - Kabob Palace, best Pakistani/Bangladeshi kabobs ever. Hit some Vietnamese food in Clarendon, maybe go to the Mac Store down the street, sushi too, if anyones up for that. And in DC we might have to hit Kinkead's for appetizers - its the top rated resturant in DC (Zagats). The Calamari is unbelievable....:D
Rock Creek park and the zoo is a possibility too. But we'll just have to play it by ear and see how many people are interested and what the weather's like.
Also, bbq at the Dukes'....:D

eyelikeart ... my room mate goes way back with eric, she's known him for years, she grew up in DC and partied all the time etc. she knows deep dish too and a ton of smaller breakthrough artists. i myself know jake (the herbaliser) and ben (dynamic syncopation) who are both on the ninjatune label, which is awesome, as vniow knows...

Eighteenth Street Lounge is a club in DC, it's owned by one of the guys in a music group called Thievery Corporation. These are the guys I had the pleasure of seeing last Tuesday at the House of Blues (where we saw the 80's cover band during GeekFest last year).
Anyway, ESL is also a record label, it all ties in together.
Moxie turned me onto them, and we're both salivating at the prospect of hanging out there. :D

What's the name of the place in Dupont? Its right around from my work, I actually walk up there for lunch once in a while. It will be a good place to stay, though, Adams Morgan, Dupont, 19th/18th, good choice.
You'd probably do just as good as me online looking for something, but if you're not sure about a place, I can go take a cruise by it at lunch and get back to you.

I think adams morgan was like, 75 for fri and sat but 175 for thursday.... something weird. But the pic is nice-- historical building and such.

Adams Morgan is a little run down. The last time I was there a couple months ago it wasn't quite what it used to be 10 years ago. Interesting things have moved out, but its still got some good stuff.

Well basically, me & duke met last summer here in New Orleans (B2TM was along as well, but I'm not so sure he's gonna be around this time). I can attest that duke is quite a good guy, as I'm sure he'd say the same about me.
I met moxie this past October in Pittsburgh. We're business partners, and moxie is quite the cool cat.
Me, duke & moxie are all in thefotohaus.com together, so that's the talk about our meeting for that Sunday.
There's no reservations anywhere, to my knowledge. We're just planning on hanging out & having some fun. :D

May 1, 2003, 11:07 PM
Hey eye, thanks for the good word. The same goes for me, and my wife agrees you're alright too! :D
As for booking tables, there's more than enough to do that doesn't require a reservation that we really don't need to worry about it. One place I do want to take you is Kinkead's if we get a chance, and that's hard to get into for dinner, but if we hit the bar it won't be a problem.
And we'll also check and see what sort of events are going on the weekend, if tickets need to be purchased, I take care of that.
The Spy Museum is the current hot spot - I still haven't made it there. You have to pick up tickets in the morning for that days tour. Its supposed to be excellent and I'd love to go if you're all up for it.

We need to know all who want to meet up rather soon. There are some things we want to do that may pose a problem for anyone under 21, so we want to make sure to include something all can do at some point. This topic came up last time regarding drinking & such, and we don't want to leave anyone out who want to meet, but don't want to put off possible plans either.
So, we got me, duke, moxie, evo (are u in?)...
who else? arn? ;)

Good to see we might have more than 3 members this time (5 if you count wives ;) ). The Spy Museum should be pretty damn cool - and we'll have to coordinate that carefully since tickets are tough to come by. That will definitely have to happen Saturday, morning if possible. I'll check out the details and post something here.
Once June gets here, we can make a sticky and post the itinerary as it comes about.

good idea there with the sticky thread. I think once some people who are closer by see what we're planning they might hop on the bandwagon.

That was actually what I meant - having another thread to take over with the first post containing the 'plan'.
This thread will be used to figure out what we're going to do....so let's figure it out......:D

oh damn, even better. I'll take Friday off and half of Thursday - that's going to be fantastic. If you need to crash at our house for a night, not a problem either.
Why did I think you were coming in on Friday?
