Well, I got my iSight yesterday and I have nobody to chat with!!!! So I thought I would start a thread of bored iSighters out there that wanna chat. I actually wanna try to get up to a 3 or 4 person chat.

Post your screen name and lets get to chatting!
(If there is another thread like this, I'm sorry, I didn't see anything like it)

I don't have an iSight but I am curious to see (in front of my own eyes) how good the quality is in one of these chat sessions. Is there anyway we can connect if I don't have a cam?
If not, oh well, I'm just bored at work. :D

I was gonna start a thread like this at some point. My AIM is Jackus01892. Remember - you need a dual g4, or a g5, or a core duo, to participate in multi way video chat.

No you don't -- you just need one of those to host. I have Powerboost though, so I can host.

I thought it was everyone - I will check. I remember being heartily pissed off when they announced it, as I had an iBook.. I'll check.

You sure? I was fairly certain. :/
EDIT: You're right.

I might be up at some time too...it'd be fun to do a multi-way MR iChat AV. :) My AIM is over there *points to the left*.
I guess I am capable of hosting, too. :)
I owe someone on MR an iChat already... I've just been having a rough few weeks. So to that someone, I apologize. :(

You have to use unofficial MSN clients, I can't remember the name of them... aMSN is one I think? But yeah, it can be done.

Hi, I'm around for video chat for the next little while. Someone with a more powerful machine will have to host because I'm in the kitchen with the PowerBook G4. I'm baking a cake for a friend's birthday party.

hi,
I added everyone who's posted their screen names. Mine is my dot-mac account, which is tvwriter (different than what's shown under my avatar to the left).
So feel free to drop me a multi-user video chat invite if you see my camera icon. I'd like to see the 3 or 4 way window on my screen. :)

I got it to work with some people but not with some others. It's weird. You have to have certain settings, especially with firewalls and routers blocking the way. I haven't been able to really get online much lately so . . . hope it is working out for you others out there?

i had a session with fradac and soulmirroraim just now and it wasn't as clear as i would have hoped it to be. anyways, i was using my MBP 2.0GHz stock to host both fradac and soulmirroraim but there was an error message saying that my computer was not able to support 2 way video chats. weird. some bug in ichat av maybe?

I don't think it has as much to do with your computer since you have a mbp. Probably your bandwidth to host. Also make sure your preferences are set at unlimited bandwith. There is a post on the first page that has to do with how much bandwidth you will need. You can go to www.dslreports.com to see what speed you are getting at the moment.

4 person video chats don't require a powerful computer as much as it NEEDS to have a blazing fast connection.
All the times I've videochatted ended up with people's faces being real fuzzy (although its great and sharp when its just one person).

Hi All,
Small suggestion... try out iGlasses (http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iglasses/) I found it greatly inhances the iSight's quality/image. You can DL the 7 day trial period to test out. Great little app ($8)

Another tip, which I read on xlr8yourmac.com: In System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming, set a limit (don't leave it at Automatic; choose a speed.). That's supposed to resolve iChat AV video chat problems. Within iChat AV itself, it's ok to leave your bandwidth to "unlimited" if you like.

I don't know how AIM works on Windows... sometimes, there can be router / firewall issues, I think? If you are on a Mac, using iChatAV, the OS X firewall, and an Apple router (e.g. AEBS), you do *not* have to do anything special on your end to get video chatting. But as you change those variables, I'm not so sure this stays true. I got Mercury to do MSN webcam also without making firewall changes. But it can be an issue... there seem to be some uncontrolled factors...when several of us tried iChatting together, a week or two ago, it was weird that, depending on who started the chat, sometimes we could invite other people and sometimes not. Like someone I was able to add into an AV chat couldn't add *me* into one. Which seems to not make much sense....

I've done iChat AV with an AIM user and done audio and video (from the US to England). It worked fairly well. But it does seem hit or miss...sometimes you get errors and it's not at all clear why they happen. :(
