Is there any way that Ical can change the date on your taskbar? I find it incredibly annoying that it always says the same date??

Yes: leave it running. If it's not running how do you expect it to change the date?

If it's hidden it's still running.

There is some code that updates the date. This has to be in the process space of the app that owns the dock icon (iCal). So iCal has to have an active process to change the date.
