MacPrime.ch claims (http://www.macprime.ch/article.php?story=details_special_event_1_april_2006) to have knowledge of an April 1st Special Event from Apple marking their 30th anniversary.

According to the site, Apple will be releasing a new product ("ultimate") which is related to "communication", will be available in 7 different colors, and will be immediately available.

No known history of reliability with this site. Apple has been widely speculated to hold some sort of media event surrounding April 1st, but no reliable information has confirmed it.

The Tuesday after the 1st seems more likely to me.

And 7 colors? Even the popular iPod only comes in two. Jumping all the way to 7 would be a surprise.

some chap on the thinksecret forums is claiming to know someone working on a commercial for an apple phone. All very tenuous but all part of the puzzle. We'll know in a fortnight!

im not so sure about the apple phone though. it seems like apple is stepping a little out of their market on this one

In summer of '02, Steve Jobs announced a "partnership between Apple, Cingular, amd Sony-Ericcson. I know because I was in the market for a phone and a service provider, so I chose a Sony phone and Cingular service.

It seems obvious now that Sony-Ericcson has been replaced by Motorola, probably because of a strained relationship based on the fact that Sony has had it's mp3 playing arse handed to it by Apple's iPod and iTunes. [Does Sony even still have it's online music download service? What was that called, Sony Connect? Just wondering...].

Point is, was SJ's announcing a partnership with Cingular simply for iTunes integration in other manufacturers' phones 3 years later? It's possible, but I doubt it.

I think Apple's been building their MVNO phone network option and accompanying iPhone / MacPhone for several years now.

I'd love to see how the new iBooks would look like, I do expect a major change in form factor, or atleast it should become slightly thinner.

But what up with the name "Ultimate"? Doesn't sound like a something Apple would name, unless it's "Mac Ultimate": An Octal Core Mac! but I doubt such a product would come in 7 colours! :D

As far as the colors go, you are completely correct - ugh. However, I did get to see one this weekend in the Apple store and they do sound REAL nice. They definately did their legwork with sound quality.

most likely 7 new $99 leather cases in various colors....eek.

30th anniversary...7 colors from the original logo...I can definitely see that. But in what? hmmm... iMacs? Mac Books? Could be cool...

No matter what happens, most of us will be disappointed, some of us ecstatic, but the rumor of rumors will continue to be disected en vomitum.

I'm for a new phone and a Mac Book with non-integrated graphics. Doubtful on both.

What if this is the first device that Apple uses their patent on color shifting devices that we saw a year or so ago. If it could be programmed to change colors for different tasks that would be interesting. Ex. blue for playing music, green for phone in 'ring' mode, red for 'vibrate', black for dead battery :p ,etc. YCSMV (Your color selections may vary.)
Just at a glance you could tell the status of your phone. :D

or maybe an override so you can choose your favorite without other people knowing what you are doing. an example that my brilliant mind came up with is that in schools, if a teacher saw your phone bright red and they knew that that meant it was on vibrate, they would take it. If it was black, but really on vibrate, then they couldn't do anything except check. and they don't have that much time. Student's would want an override or an easy hack.

This could be cool though. I like your ideas.

"So, it's on sale right now, at the Apple store. You can get it in three colours, and there are three models to choose from: the Ultimate mini, Ultimate, and Ultimate Extreme. And let me tell you, I've been using an Ultimate Extreme ever since our developers built the prototype, and it really takes the Ultimate to the next level. I told our developers "We need to create the Ultimate, and take it to the max. I don't mean a PowerUltimate. I don't even mean an Ultimate Pro. I want us to pump it up a notch, I want us to break the mould, turbocharge the design and kick some ass. In short: the Ultimate Extreme."

*Do not use while driving.

The rumorfest might drive you crazy, but it beats the Mackerel Squash strategy of announcing products that it has not even begun to create, like their new handheld gaming system. The only reason MS announces a product is so someone else will create it, so MS can copy it or buy them out.

For those curious about macprime.ch, I can offer some background information as I am a contributor for macprime.ch. It's a private Mac news site located in Switzerland serving the Swiss Mac community.

As for the news, the article mentioned in this thread relates to another news item, posted last Thursday:

http://www.macprime.ch/article.php?story=special_event_1_april_2006

Now, it is important to understand correctly what's being said in this article. That's why I translated it into English, it reads:

Quote: A reliable source has informed us that a Special Event is indeed planned for April 1, 2006 - which happens to be Apple's 30th Birthday. According to our source, an ultimate product will be presented. Rumours [about the product] have been floating around for years. We don't have further information about this "ultimate product" about which people have been speculating for years. macprime.ch will keep you informed. End of quote.

if it's an ultimate product, it should be some kind of iPod that does everything pocket devices can do, including cellphone capabilities and it should have a wide touchscreen
although rumors about these functions have risen the last month, I highly doubt these would all be implented in one device, and certainly not in a week or two (and probably not in seven colors)

I hope we could see a new iBook, and maybe a video iPod, but hey, Steve could have some pretty nice surprises, it's their birthday after all, and maybe we'll all be flabbergasted by something wild, new, exiting, and very colourful

Maybe Apple (and others) could look to the system used by rock climbers in the UK for clasifying the difficultly of a given climb. They have formallized a systm of "adjective permutation" where "everyone" knows that "Mild Severe" is much eaier than "Mild Very Severe" and that "Very Difficult" is easier to climb than either of those. But of couse "Hard Very Difficult" falls between. No I'm not kidding. The systm is real and there are over a dozen finely shaded variations. Only in the UK could something like this be invented

OK we Americans can adapt this. Take the words "ultimate", "pro" "advanced" "extream" "lite" "elements" and the roman numbers II and III. Now all you need to do is purmute these few words and you can make hundreds of names for a whole product line. Say you are trying to market a "fobar" You can have "fobar II ultimate pro" followed by the "fobar II extream" and then "foobar II advanced utimate". Once the system is formalized and written down no one will have to wonder if the "Ultimate Pro" is better or worse than the "Advanced ulitmate" or if the "extreame lite pro II" is the one they want.

I was thinking about this the other morning.

I think the image hinting days are not as solid as the used to be. The iCal image on the last invite was widely speculated to suggest a synching PDA device. Unless there are some features on the HiFi that I missed, the image was a red herring. It was, as someone on MR suggested, winking at us saying "save the date." Looks like Jobs and Company have toned down the images on the invites trying to be more obscure.

That makes sense, since it's obvious to us that a lot of analysts and news organizations are reading these sites and making predictions based on our vocalized (type-ified?) Apple dreams...

I didn't look too much into the last invitation simply because Apple labeled the event as "fun, new products." It was the community that hyped up the event. After all, only a handful of media people were invited. Remember the last "One more thing..." event? That had a movie curtain in the background, hinting at a new iPod capable of playing video. I don't expect Apple to tone it down on the invites. It all depends on how big the event really is. Next time we see "fun, new products" in a headline, we can't look into it so much.

some reports that this is a publicity stunt for the site. I've removed it from Page 2 as a result.

After some discussion with the owner of macprime.ch, we decided to post an official answer as we were accused of having pulled a "publicity stunt" by the owners of MacRumors.

THIS WAS NOT A PUBLICTIY STUNT!!!

macprime.ch is relaunching its site on April 1 with a small "special event". We deliberately posted a news item last Thursday where we talked about a special event on April 1st. This was meant to create some excitement among our own readers and we never intended to deceive anyone.

Much to our surprise, by Monday night CET not a single reader had realised this was about macprime.ch and not about Apple. (We only said a special event would be held on 04/01 we never said that Apple would organise such an event.) So we decided to release some more information about the relaunched macprime.ch. All the attributes we mentioned in the article that is linked to in this very thread are in fact new features of the all new macprime.ch.

As I already mentioned, we never thought our little story would get attention outside the German speaking part of the world, let alone on MacRumors.

So I guess someone owns us an apology.

http://www.singtelshop.com/store/product/default.asp?id=1

iPod has been added as a new brand in the past week in Singtelshop.com. while it could totally mean SingTel is jumping into selling mere iPods, it may well be otherwise.

for those who don't know SingTel, it is Singapore's leading telecommunications provider.
I think you're onto something there. That is very strange.
