Just read this on MSNBC... way too ironic:

The battle between Tom Cruise and Scientology and its foes is heating up.

Cruise and Scientology have been in the news lately because of an allegedly censored "South Park" parody of the religion — and now Scientology and the "Top Gun" star are being blamed for a woman's death.

"Thanks, Tom Cruise and the Church of Scientology, for your expert advice on mental health," blasts an ad in LA Weekly. The ad goes on to say that a woman was killed "by the schizophrenic son she was told to treat with vitamins instead of psychiatric care."

The ad refers readers to a Web site, which provides details on the case of Jeremy Perkins, a 28-year-old schizophrenic who stabbed his mother to death. Perkins was a staunch Scientologist and his mother was a counselor in the church — which opposes psychiatry and psychiatric drugs and "believes modern psychiatric medicine derives from an ancient alien civilization's plot to drug and enslave humanity," notes the site.

A spokesman for the Celebrity Center of the Church didn’t respond to requests for comment by deadline.Of COURSE the CoS isn't going to comment on this. What a bunch of asshats.

Isn't dogma great! Being an unofficially labeled secular humanist, I'm not sure how this is supposed to work, but do these capital letter religions, especially the Christian ones (ie Scientology, Catholocism, etc.), ever take time to look over the rule book and decide if any changes need to be adopted? I mean...COME ON! Next, Tom will be telling us that the earth is FLAT!

Um. Yeah. Scientologists.

If mood stabilizers come from an alien race out to enslave humanity, why hasn't Tom Cruise made that movie yet? He could battle the aliens with a barrage of vitamins and herbal remedies.

Scientology the movie. God that would be great.

Personally, I'd like to see more of it. Maybe we can slip some psychotropics into the CoS' vitamin supply. ;)

pffft this isn't the first or the last death that can be blamed on religion.

Hell, I know the body thetans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology#Operating_Thetan_levels_and_the_Xenu_incident) almost killed me before I got them audited off.

Hubbard was a professional pathological liar and "scientology" is a scam not unlike Amway.

Kinda, but I think a little shadenfraude would be ok in this situation. I just wouldn't necessarily call it funny. Ironic maybe.

well shadenfraude is technically finding humor in the misfortune of others, while i am finding humor in the stupidity of others who got what was coming to them. ;) i'm cruel but i'm fair. :p

Anyone who allows their religion to dictate their medical care is pretty loony IMO. Unfortunately, too many people do.

In all fairness to Catholocism, it does change it's position every once in a while. Like on the earth being the center of the universe and evolution. It's usually several centuries late, but it gets there eventually.

I wonder who placed the ad in LA Weekly? The MSNBC story doesn't say.

Just a cautionary tale that one shouldn't take medical advice from Tom Cruise.

He isn't a doctor, and doesn't play one in the movies.

This reminds me...

When I was a kid, my parents, being the God-fearing people they are, forced me to go to church at a place called Disciple Fellowship, in a rundown section of Denver. It wasa BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN church, not scientologist (keep this in mind).

After a couple of years, the place went psychotic, there were dancing in the ailes, people fainting, people speaking in tongues... It was like that scene in the Blues Brothers.

Not long after that, I told my parents I'd never go to church again, and they could ground me, beat me, take away everything I had and never feed me again, and I would die before I'd go back. (I was 15 then)

Well, about a year after I stopped going, the news reported that Pastor Paul Shell, the stupid piece of **** that gained much respect (and money) from his church, had told a couple of parents that their diabetic son, age 12, would be cured by God and would no longer need his insulin. That kid DIED.

And guess what? Pastor Paul Shell could not be convicted because of religious beliefs.

It's time to destroy religion. I'm tired of hearing this religious BS being spread and giving them exemption from anything because of their beliefs. Burning Churches to the ground and abolishing all religion should be top priority.

can somebody explain that born again thing ? i'm not so sure what it is (since i doubt it has to do anything with reincarnation) ... is that some sort of sub splinter group or something like that ?

Arent born again Christians the only Christians in the world going to heaven?

I believe it is, though pagan, this:

they were christians in a past life and were sent back to Earth to do good one last time, thusly BORN AGAIN. And only now can they get into heaven.

Noooo I am sorry the correct answer was MORMON.
Mormon ladies n gentlemen.
Did not see that one coming.
LOL

the born again family I knew growing up, their son (my agegroup out of their 4 kids) was the BIGGEST liar our school ever knew. If you want the definition of shadenfraude, it was him. What was more, was I know later on (i didnt stay there and goto the same HS) he thought he was Gods gift to girls, but still a huge jerk. Now he had some Christian values we all could look up to.

Ok...I took the time to read a brief definition on this cult and now I understand that they aren't Christians, like so many of the other cults. Thanks for the motivation! :D

I have a good scientology story. I was born of fairly humble beginnings, and my single parent mom, a postal worker, really struggled financially. She had a coworker who was in the same boat, and they decided to get a house together to share expenses, childcare, etc. I was pretty happy - my first house, a nice move up from the run down apartments I was raised in. I had my own room, and her son was my age and fun to hang out with.

Unfortunately, the other mom was also just getting into scientology, and after about six months of us all living together, the church told her that to keep progressing in her mental work, she really shouldn't live people who weren't scientologists. So they kicked us out. We did find another place, but it was kind of ghetto.

Anyway, I always wonder what happened to the lady and her poor kid. And yeah, I hate scientology.

can somebody explain that born again thing? There are several references to it in the New Testament, but one such discussion is recorded in John 3:3-6 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%203:3-6;&version=31;):
In reply, Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."

"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"

Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.Jesus was trying to explain to Nicodemus (a member of the Jewish ruling council) about the kind of transformation that must take place in someone's life for them to be saved. He's drawing a parallel between starting life when you're born "of the flesh", and starting your life over when you're baptized (i.e. "born of water") and indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

So no, as I interpret it, I don't believe he was talking about reincarnation. To address Sdashiki's question, Jesus did say that in order to see the kingdom of God, you must be born again (John 3:3). What that means to various Christian denominations is a matter of debate. I mean, I consider myself a born again Christian, but I don't identify with the people that Onizuka was describing. I do believe that God has the power to heal the sick, but I also believe that one of the ways that He does so is by giving doctors and other medical professionals the wisdom and discernment that they need to do their jobs.

Yes.
Taking glee in others misfortune is downright evil. That kid must have been f###'d up eight ways to sunday and his poor mom must have been at her wits end just dealing with it. I am sorry that scientology got involved in their life, I'm sorry that he never got the help he needed, and I'm sorry that his mother died in the most horrible way imagineable...at the hands of her own son.
These are real people with real problems, not some comic book characters or "bad guys" in a video game.

My brother's been involved with them for 20 years and finds it literally painful to talk to anyone who is not a member. Needless to say our family has little or no contact with him.

A few years ago I visited him in LA and he insisted we visit the l ron hubbard museum. Anyone who thinks scientology is not a cult should visit it, they literally worship the guy. Unfortunately our transient, consumerist society that worships at the altar of capitalism will always find converts to such cults. Some people simply need to be told what to do. The more restrictive and exclusive the religion, the more it appeals to some people. Mormonism is a prime example.

Actually it's "pleasure" in the misfortunes of others. Humor is a whole nother ballpark. Not saying she deserved what she got, but she did kinda being it on herself.
