View Full Version : Yep, another tattoo

I got my first tattoo a little over a month ago and I'm going back tomorrow to schedule an appointment for a second job. The first
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d147/IamJacksTragedy/COCATat.jpg

is some artwork from the band Coheed and Cambria and I'm going to be getting a GJ from the band glassJAw (personalized by me). I'm excited. I have another seven or so planned and I'm contemplating on getting sleeves but I'm just determining whether I want to wear long sleeve shirts for the rest of my working life. Well, please don't flame me for what my tattoos are; they are significant to many memories in my life that is why I can justify getting them.

If you have tattoos, post pictures here. Fun, fun, fun!

i like glassjaw a lot, but i think that i would never be able to get a band's logo or name or anything tattooed, unless it was just so cool visually i think. just seems too temporary and fleeting a part of my life.

as it is i've been working on tat ideas using various song lyrics as a base and have yet to decide on one

make sure to let us see the new one when you get it!

it really doesn't hurt that bad. i found it mildly annoying but not painful. that said, i hate that i got a tattoo but i suppose i can look at it like any of my other scars, just a mark of things i've done in the past. my tattoo sits right near my most recent scar from a dirtbike crash last august. the mark of a tomboy. :p

to the OP: looks good. :)

it's almost shameful to post a picture, i'm always thinking "why did i do that?" when i see it. but like i said, just another mark of thing i've done to my body in the past.

but ok, here's a picture. this is before i got a road-rash scar 6 inches below it [and to the right] from a dirtbike crash. it means virtue. :o

You look tense Blue...I know you don't know me very well...but I think a back rub is in order...:D ;) Perhaps you've had one since the photo and are feeling much better now. I think my wife needs a backrub now though...thanks for the idea!

Oh...and my wife has 2 or 3 small tattoos in various spots, but I have yet to find the right combination of time, money, and artistic talent to get the band (not a muscal band...the circlet-around-arm type) I want on my arm. If'n I'm going to have it done, I want no regrets...or to hear myself addressing the artist with comforting words like ", it's ok...this was basically what I wanted".

Well, since I was the first to go Over The Top with my indirect compliment/comment on the quality of photo that iBlue provided :D I'll take part of the blame for things getting so low afterwards. I mean, all of those lascivious thoughts that were going through my mind at the sight of a nice, scantilly clad and well inked (on topic) back ...wait...I think that's perfectly normal...for males and females! It sounds much more chivalrous when you jump to the defense during such a disgusting display of...humanity!? ;) I think photos of some male members...I mean...co-posters...have gotten as much attention.

My work day is almost over, and my wife agrees with my plan, so I'm going to get a tattoo of iBlues back on my back, sans any band name. That way we'll both have a fabulous female backs to look at on a summer's day. :)

I have two tattoos, and I really hate them and regret getting them, but I must say yours is really cool looking. Wish mine looked as good...

I have a small one on my left shoulder that isn't so bad, but the one that really bugs me and I hope to get removed some day is a really large (3-inch or so) black orchid on my ankle. A word of advice to any other females out there contemplating a tattoo -- don't get it on your ankle! I never even want to wear skirts or shorts in the summer anymore because I think the damn thing looks so trashy.

I don't necessarily dislike tattoos in general though, especially when they're done really well and have a special meaning for the tattoo-ee. Unfortunately, mine don't have a special meaning... they were just a silly act of rebellion from when I was 17! :p

Well, here is mine... photo taken by my wife with our really cheep camera. Plus a scan of the original drawing I did that the tattoo artist matched (quite nicely I would add, even though it is hard to see in the picture).

I got mine about 9 years ago. I spent about three months playing with different designs and another month finding the person who finally did the tattoo.

The symbol is a variation of the Spacing Guild's insignia (from Dune). For those who don't know, the Spacing Guild is one of the primary mental and physical training schools in the Dune universe... this particular school emphasizes pure mathematics.

Well, I went to the shop today and my tattoo artist who is incredibly blunt told me that my tattoo I had planned wasn't going to work and that he wouldn't put it on my body. Simple reason: Straight-lines are a work of disaster on the human body as he puts it. So I went into a small bit of depression because I was so excited to be getting a second, but I'll figure out another one to go on the back of my right arm soon. I already have seven more planned so I'll probably just keep moving along.

plus now everybody has a damn chinese character/kanji tattoo. it's not as original as it once was.A friend of mine is getting a tattoo which will include a quote she really likes... I spent a few weeks researching how to convert it into Elvish (first translating it into proper Quenya and then writing that in Tengwar). She wanted the quote to be a secret (that only she and I know) and at the same time she wanted it to be esthetically pleasing (which it was in the end).

I doubt there is going to be a ton of people getting tattoo's in Elvish... specially considering how hard it is to say anything original! It was quite stressful for me doing the translation as screwing up really isn't an option when something is going to be tattooed on someone's body.

well thats up to debate though.... i know of some artists who are exceptional, and they charge a flat hourly rate of $120 or so. which depending on the complexity of the tattoo isn't too bad at all.

it all depends on size, complexitiy and the amount of time it takes to create the tattoo

Tell her that I didn't think it was bad at all (you know, that whole woman to woman bit). I brought my sister with me and she talked to me the entire time. So it didn't hurt at all really. A little irritating hearing the buzzing, but my sister's talking helped me ignore it.

They are addicting though. He he.

A friend of mine is getting a tattoo which will include a quote she really likes... I spent a few weeks researching how to convert it into Elvish (first translating it into proper Quenya and then writing that in Tengwar). She wanted the quote to be a secret (that only she and I know) and at the same time she wanted it to be esthetically pleasing (which it was in the end).

Sort of the way I was thinking for a new tattoo idea I have (still want to do one based on my avatar). After spending a long weekend in Reykjavik, Iceland I feel for the Viking based charm images, and the Runes alphabet (used to spell words, but each has a meaning by itself).

Attached are images of the charm that gave me the idea and a couple of shots of people with a modern B&W take on the basic idea (though they did not include the dragon head, which is important as the power of the charm. And the woman has the design upside down).

As of now my plans are for this piece to go on my right bicep. Though I like the boldness of back pieces. I also like the boldness of B&W tats, but in looking at the picture of the charm, I can see how a black & grey tat might be more distinctive. The charm means "safe travels/journeys. The idea of the Runes alphabet would be to be either an armband if I do this piece on my bicep, or if done as a back piece -under the prow of the ship.

I would think that that art work would look much better on an arm (like that one image you attached).

I'm sure the woman (pictured) liked the look and feel of the design. The way she has it does accent the body's natural shape... though it killed the original meaning of the design.

Tell her that I didn't think it was bad at all...We're currently stuck at the design phase. I'm getting the idea that coming up with something unique and meaningful to her that she can live with is the current stumbling block.

I'll remember this thread when we get to that next hurdle. ;)

But if I was forced I quite like the one that the singer from Incubus has on his forearm.

Nice tat there. Though in this picture it looks like a henna tattoo.

I have to say that I like tats that standout. On the forearms, full arm tats, and even some that are above the collar line. But for myself, working in retail, I need (or want) to take (or maybe more properly, my own fear on how others would take more visible tats in the workplace) a more conservative approach in any ink that I get. I just don't want to be forced

My first tattoo was on my left thigh about 14 years ago. A lion in a relaxed pose, with the zodiac symbol for Leo. It was placed so that shorts and family friendly swim trunks cover it. Then 5 years ago I got a tribal "swirl" design done on my right pec. I am hoping that I might get that recreated for my left pec.

As others have said, body modification can be addictive. The long lapses for me were due to outside influences and "obligations". Tats can be expensive in in an area like the DC area, where I live. My two tattoos were done outside of the DC area because they were affordable, and I liked the work of the artist.

Now that I am only responsible for myself, I find that I have the money to get some more. It is just finding the time and the right art now. Time because I am finding that travel is my new drug. The right art, because tats in my mind are permeant. I could never see myself ever going under the laser to remove a tattoo.

Said so well. But then you have us chubby sorts that it might not make much of a difference. :D LOL!

Then you have the aspect of the superstition of charms s tattoos in general. In researching my desires I came across a website of a tattoo artist that refused to do certain Viking "charms" as tattoos - for they had such dual meanings, that they could bring bad luck on the wearer.

If I was not so set on the "charm" aspect of the dragon head ship having meaning for "safe travel/voyage" and more into the basic design of the Viking ships as the two samples I posted - I would so love the woman's tat as as my back piece.

I am looking at this dragon head ship design as a symbol for my new found lust for travel. Depending on where I place this art, one of the other ideas I had was to incorporate the flags of the nations/states/cities I have visited.

This is problematic only for the detail that many flags have, and just how much of my skin am I willing to give up to realize the "dream". See my other post about wanting/needing to be cautious in my tats. Otherwise I could see the underside of my arms being used for these flags.

I guess I could always use the airport codes for the cities I visit; but then I think I would feel like I was just a piece of luggage. :D LOL! Though with the discussion of the overuse of some characters in tattoos; this would be a balance in that.

I will say that the desire for bodyart for myself is driven by my new found freedom in the past year. I want it to mean something to me after 13+ years of repression and sacrifice.

As much as I love the sun, pools, and beaches - I am at the cusp in timing to do a new tattoo.

Hoping that since iGary and I are to get together early next week, I hope that the weather co-operates in order to post some images of what I have in tats right now, in order to get some advise as to what might and might not work in general design.

Prices are funny when it comes to tattoos. I went to four different studios in Jacksonville before I found the place I liked the best (8th Day Tattoo (http://www.8thdaytattoo.com)) and they actually gave me the same ballpark price (fyi: one studio said $150, two said $200, and one said $250). I think it was a good price, especially for how well he did the tattoo. Tim is a quiet guy when you're getting a tattoo, but once you get him talking he's hillarious. Much respect for the dude, hence the reason I'm not going to move on with the tattoo I showed him yesterday since he said it wouldn't work no matter what. Right now I'm researching some bats. I have an infatution with bats and I just visited the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens today, which is filled with bats, and I'm going to work on drafting something to go on the back of my right arm where I wanted the other. Unfortunately I probably won't be getting another until June or so, because Graham (the owner) is booked until June and Tim is booked for at least another month. Good shops get good business; no doubt about that.

I don't get it you're amazed daily by the people you meet and expect better from people you communicate with online?I expect the computer literate demographics to have a bit more maturity and tact than the toothless rednecks who play checkers daily at the local park. If any of you had made those comments within earshot of them, they would've hopped in the truck and run you down.

What's not mature about appreciating the female form? There's a difference between appreciation and objectification. Reading my, "Seriously, guys. She's not a piece of meat." comment might have shed some light on that perspective.

I made no attempt to humiliate iBlue, flatter and flirt with maybe but not humiliate.Allow me to clarify, since you're struggling with this.

I was referring to your attempt to publically humiliate me (in this message (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=2255180&postcount=39)) rather than the stereotypical male response to female skin.

If your goal was not to humiliate, then it was at least to make me look like a fool for taking offense to the "hubba hubba *drool*" response to a picture of a girl in a backless shirt.

I imagine it's only a matter of time before some "demi-god" on a power trip comes through here and purges all dissenting opinions, anyway. I'm not sure why I bother stating personal opinions around here anymore.

As OutThere pointed out above, a Demi-God is not a moderator. We do not have any powers to purge any more than you do. The title simply means that we have contributed some cash to the running of the site.

The only ones who can delete posts are the Moderators and Gods. There is a list of them here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showgroups.php?).

I don't know... a picture like that seems like it would really stand as a warning to make sure you REALLY want that tattoo removed before getting that done!!!

Was the original tattoo so bad that it was really worth doing that to your body? Cause it sure looks like the solution is much worse than the original problem (going from the image you posted).

:) The tattoo looked pretty cheezy and I didn't really want it any more so just decided to remove it. The blistering was nothing long term... I think the photo that I originally posted was taken just after the third laser session. After the first session it's the worst because the dark color in the tattoo reacts more to the heat from the laser and causes skin burns & blisters... The worst is how itchy it is, and you just can't touch it !!!

Here is the "Before" picture of that previous photo... You can see the lighter color dots in it where each laser beam hit it.
43818

And here is one before the 6th treatment (after it healed)
43819

I doubt it'll ever go completely, but at least it not dark black anymore so I can wear light color shirts in summer without it showing through... Each treatment costs about £150 too and i'm up to my 8th, the original tattoo only cost £30 total.

Oh, well... only got myself to blame

Tattoos and other body modification should be looked upon as permeant. Forget the idea that lasers might be able to wipe away the results. That is why I have been cautious on what and where I place a tattoo. At my job I think I could show up with a full body Japanese style tattoo, and other than a few gasps (:D ), not much else would be said or done. I do think that long term prospects for serious advancement might be doused.

For myself I force my self to look beyond where I am at at this point in time. Being in sales and retail, and over 40  , perceptions are everything in the hiring process.

Also in the sales environment, we are some times required to were short sleeved shirts during "special events". A full arm tattoo might not go over well with a well heeled crowd like we have in most of Fairfax County, Virginia.

The younger people here might say , "F*** THEM"; but when you have a lifestyle that you want to keep up with - it is harder to say goodbye to a decent job.

I havent had the nerve to get one yet, but I know exactly what I want. And yes, they are pretty cheesy:

1. Superman logo on my right bicep

2. Barcode on the left bicep

3. "Under, behind and inside everything you took for granted, something horrible has been growing." Across my shoulders/back (two lines)

No chance I'll regret getting those, huh?

Cant help it, thats what I want. Oh, yeah. And some sort of ambigram. Not sure what it should say, though...

that would have been a good first post for you to start out with in this thread.

that being said.. back on topic. i've always wanted to a get a small tattoo, nothing major but i like the idea. i don't want to get anything flashy and large, because i'm definitely not gonna want it later in life (probably won't even want a small one later, but whatever).

either a message in elvish (btw, i forget who was posting about that before.. it's such a great idea. i thought i was the only one who had thought of it yet :X ) or perhaps sanskrit, or maybe a kanji despite their overwhelming popularity these days.

i think i've got a few years to go before i decide to actually do it though.

it's almost shameful to post a picture, i'm always thinking "why did i do that?" when i see it. but like i said, just another mark of thing i've done to my body in the past.

but ok, here's a picture. this is before i got a road-rash scar 6 inches below it [and to the right] from a dirtbike crash. it means virtue. :o

ok, now back to the actual topic of the thread.

tattoos are great. . . and addicting. i have 2 (ill hopefully take a pic and post) and i love them both! one is a turtle and one is a design of sorts. anyway, the biggest thing i can say is KNOW what you want! ive had several friends get tatts and i always tell them to decide on a design then think about it for a month or more and if you still want it, then get it. ive had a couple of friends change their minds in that amount of time. and i have even changed my mind on a couple ideas that i want. cause i do want another/more tatts, i just dont have any money for it right now. just spent all my (extra) money on a mac mini O:-)
