Well, well.. AMD has delayed the desktop version of its 64-bit Hammer... again.. So maybe the PPC970 will be out in powermacs BEFORE any intel or amd desktop variety.

Sorry to rain on the parade, but DEC shipped desktop Alphas years ago. You can find them on eBay nowadays for under $100. They run Tru64 Unix or Linux in 64-bit.

Sun Microsystems is also shipping 64-bit desktop systems and has been for a number of years. The lowest priced one is currently $1,395 (US) + monitor.

Both Sun and Digital systems were more servers than desktops,
and not as compatible as either Macs or PCs with home productivity software. Apple's may be the first 64 bit desktop for home users.

Hate to rain on your parade, but the Alpha and Sun Sparc won't run crap. You can't run Windows XP, just Windows 2000 for the Alpha and the Sparc only can do slow emulation.
The way AMD is losing money, I doubt we will ever see this chip that have been hyping for 3 years.

What if the PowerPC 970 doesn't arrive in Macs until 2004?
Just playing devil's advocate.

All signs point to an earlier release, but that can mean jack squat.
