View Full Version : Intel on Apple's Influence... and Other Apple Gadgets?

News.com's Apple Blog (http://news.com.com/2061-10793_3-6053397.html?part=rss&tag=6053397&subj=news) posted quotes from Deborah Conrad -- vice president and directory of "Team Apple" at Intel. This group was reported to be formed (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/11/20051122092351.shtml) back in November to help Apple with their transition to Intel chips. Such a dedicated team is reportedly not uncommon for large customers of Intel.
So, Conrad's team, works closely with Apple on use of Intel technology. When questioned about whether or not Apple was planning on using Intel chips inside the iPod, Conrad states that we aren't "going to see anything soon". However, she did hint that there may some exciting progress in future gadgets:
But when it comes to future gadgets other than the iPod, "that's where we get very, very excited."
Unfortunately, the context of the quote is a bit unclear, but suggests Apple has more "gadgets" in the works.

Maybe an Apple Tablet or PDA? What else could it be?

Bring on the gadgets! I was underwhelmed by the iPod HiFi, so my expectations for Apple's new developments have been tempered for a while, but there's plenty of opportunities for Apple to show off their ability to innovate.

Intriguing quote. Tablets seem like the most likely answer, of all the devices we've already got rumors on.

Hmm, other gadgets... What else does Intel have in the parts bin? I'm familiar with the IXP425 line of embedded processors, plus Intel is a big player in the UPnP market and also provides reference UPnP devices. Maybe Apple will jump in?

Quad band cell capabilities
Pivoting iSight camera (270?)
stereo BlueTooth headset w/microphone
Stylus
Mac OS X v10.4.6

You can change it in User CP. ;)
I'm all for new gadgets! I just can't think of anything other than a PDA or Phone - I'm sure they'll come up with some cool stuff though.

Given that this was in a room full of reporters, I doubt Ms. Conrad had a slip of the tongue and was giving away something that Intel or Apple wanted kept secret.
If this was a hint, it could be one intended to keep the public interested, or to pass a "we'd love to talk about anything you have in mind" hint to Apple.

Does this signal the end of the dying Apple-Motorola relationship?
I am not surprised by these sentiments at all, Apple's success with the iPod was sure to translate into more consumer electronics at some point.
I must be in the minority, but I would love Apple to implement the VIIV platform in a home media device. If VIIV won't work with Apple as some have suggested, then maybe they could meet half-way.

Much like the Willy Wonka Factory (the imaginary one, not the real one), I am sure that the most exciting products that Apple makes never see the light of day. Perhaps they are too risky. Perhaps they can't produce enough of them in a stable state. Perhaps there's no market. Perhaps they can't make them affordable. Or, perhaps they're just ahead of their time. We'll never really know, short of sneaking into Apple Campus.
I remember many moons ago, when I was in sixth grade, which is about 11 years ago, Macworld had an issue with Mac products that were either never released or maybe they were like mockups.

In the 2005 when Steve Jobs announced the Move to intel, he hinted a new technology, This just confirms that.
I hope it a really cool integrated graphics that could do 2D and suck at 3D, use shared memory. Oh we have that LOL :D

Conrad also weighed in on the recent contest to install Windows XP on the new Intel-based MacBook Pro. "I thought it was pretty funny," she said. "I actually thought it took a lot longer than people expected."
That's quite an unprofessional thing to say!

Yeah, I had that too. There was a great issue of MacUser that had loads of photographs of that stuff in it too, like Apple rollable keyboards and so on, stuff that is just seeing the light of day from other manufacturers now.
Funny how these sorts of insights are no longer granted because of the internet rumour-mill.
Oh yes, that reminds me, don't know if anyone has suggested this already, but may I suggest this (link to iTMS) (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=122010934&s=143444&i=122010789) as the unofficial themetune to MacRumors?

It is pointless to discuss something like "new gadgets" from Apple, a few days before a revolutionary media product was announced, a lot of people expected a new Newton, but it turned out to be the iPod resulting in tons of "mehs" and a lot of negative comments (see thread 500)
I think we'll have to wait to see what this new stuff will be, but chances are it will be awesome:eek:

This definitely belongs on page 2.
There's nothing to this story. It has about as much weight as those analyst reports expecting an intel iBook soon. Who would have thought that Apple has new, innovative and exciting products in development? Kind of like saying that Porsche is developing a new high performance coupe...
I'm starting to think that we aren't going to see anything truly innovative for the next six or seven months. New iBooks (Macbooks, right?), intel desktop Macs (Mac Pro?) and maybe an Xserve. Expanded UB apps, making all Apple software Universal.
I think that Apple has it's hands full right now. Lawsuits, intel switch, ITMS feature content negotiations. That's what their energy is these days. I expect there are some great products in R&D right now, but I don't think anything will come about for many moons...

I hope it'a a PDA type device or really small tablet (or UMPC)... Since Apple doesn't have one, I was forced to by the Dell Axim... pretty good piece of hardware, but windows mobile 5 sucks! (and TRUST ME, I'm not just saying this to be an "Apple fanboy" or anything) ...it's soooo not user friendly, very unintelligent, and crashes here and there (to name a few!). I also love to use it with my bluetooth GPS unit... and after talking to Garmin, which is a leading GPS manufacturer, they said that all of their GPS units will be ported over to Apple devices within this year.... and he did say "Apple devices" ...hmmmm makes me think that they might have a nondisclosure agreement with Apple and know that they will be releasing some sort of PDA / tablet device... Maybe I'm just reading into it too deeply, but I sure hope so! :)

... Apple's success with the iPod was sure to translate into more consumer electronics at some point.
That and the assurance by SJ back in late '01 that the iPod would be the 1st in a series of "digital lifestyle devices" that we could expect from Apple.
4+ years of R&D [or at least 2+ years "officially" since the iPod Division was formed in January '04, I'm sure they already had projects in the works though] sounds long enough for Apple to be "ripe" for new revolutionary product introductions.
Lose the mouse that you popularized Apple, give us multi-touch point input vPods and MacPods/MacPads [clipboard-sized network pda/tablet hybrid device].
