Are you talking about what people here do themselves, or some list that someone came up with for safety?
I usually do something like this...boiled down to 8 steps I guess...
1) Lean in and stick the key in.
2) Sit down and adjust seat if necessary.
3) Check mirrors.
4) Clutch and brake in.
5) Parking brake off.
6) Neutral
7) Start the car.
8) Select tunes. :D

This would be a "safety" list.

1st thing is probably the seat, then seat belt, then the 3 mirrors to see if they are all in place, and I'm off. If anything is off (like the mirrors) I adjust on the way off the my street.
That's only 3 things before I start moving.

Let's take a guess at this.
1. Adjust seat
2. Fasten Seatbelt
3. Adjust Rear-view mirror
4. Adjust driver-side mirror
5. Adjust passenger-side mirror
6. Check emergency break
7. Put car into drive/reverse
8. Run into something

8. Run into something
Not generally a good idea...but could prove to be entertaining depending of what you hit and how hard you hit it. ;) :)

According to the rules, NEVER EVER turn the car on without making sure that the driver and all passengers are secured. Personally, I get in, start the car, then buckle, as it gives time for the engine fluids to get where they need to be, and up to a minimal operating temperature. I don't usually have to adjust the seat, since I'm the only one who drives my car most of the time. If I drive either of my parents cars, I start the car, then adjust the seat, then mirrors (why do the mirrors before you're sitting where you will be while driving?), then buckle.

hmm my first 8 things after I get in my car and assuming I just shut the door
1. Buckle seat belt
2.Lets see hit the shifter to check to see it is in netreul.
3. put key in and push in clutch to start the car.
4. Glance that the fuel gauge
5. Check the review mirror and adjust if needed
6. Put car in rev.
7. Look behind me
8. Back out.
Checking seat it my car dont really have to. Besides if it not my car I just move the seat all the way back. No really checking required. Then adjust the mirror. I hate driving cars with out powered mirrors so those few cars that dont have them bug me but then again that is few and very far between (lets see last car I drove with out them was my sisters new car. Before that is been like..... 8 years ago when I drove the drivers ed car no it was 3-4 years ago when we took a friends of my car to the movies and I drove. Her car does not have power mirriors.

I wonder how/if they actually ENFORCE that though.
every state is a bit different about that
it depends on if it is a 'primary law' or not-
for most states-
if they pull you for something.... and notice the seatbelt isn't on- they'll tack on an extra something for ya-
other states
they do road side checks (like the Drunk Driving checkpoints)
they'll have a handful of cops hanging out in the middle of the road w/ a roadblock-
they will just have u slow down enough to check that it is on
then let you go-
or pull you to the side & issue citation-
i've seen a few of these - moral- if you see cops ahead- make sure you are following most of the laws (throw the joint out the window)

One thing they always used to get us for in driver's ed is checking around the car to make sure nothing's obstructing its path (e.g. rocks, debris, the trash can, a small child) before you get in. I remember some kind of a safety list like what you're talking about, but I don't remember what it is. What people actually do is completely different from what driving instructors are looking for.

If it's my car and nobody has driven it (boyfriend/ carwashing place, etc.) then:
-get in
-set purse down
-plug Nano in
-buckle up ("Click it or Ticket" here, too! Used to be, "Buckle up! It's the law.")
-clutch in, turn ignition
If somebody else has driven it:
-get in
-set purse down
-adjust seat
-adjust mirrors (all three as needed)
-plug Nano in
-buckle up
-clutch and ignition

Personally I never put my seat belt on before I pull away, having freedom to move around offers an easier way to defend yourself and your car from any possible attackers. For the same reason I always unstrap myself before I park.

Bread has a tendency to fall out of a shopping bag during driving unless it's tucked down well. Maybe that's what it was all about?
Bread, in Norwegian, is also used in a "falafel" sort of way for the male you-know-what.

OK, I've come up with a plausible enough explanation, and that is that runninmac meant to say "Push down brake", but due to a double-misspelling ("Push down brake" -> "Push down break" -> "Push down bread") he ended up with his mysterious sixth step.

If you don't give the dough a good punch, it will keep on rising and fill up the whole passenger compartment. That would create a driving hazard, and you'll never fit it out the door and into the oven when you get home.

The road safety slogan here used to be "Clunk-Click, Every Trip." That must've been late 70's. So few people here drive without a seatbelt when I do (like when I'm moving cars about to get to one block at the back of a lot or summit) it feels really weird.

When I worked for Dow Elanco (now Dow AgroChemical) we had to go through their driving safety program. There were something like 14 steps and every 6 months all employees had to review it. Even now (10 years later) the rules sometimes float through my head while I drive.
I'm not going to get all of them, but here I go...
Walk around your vehicle (Tires, lights)
Adjust mirrors and seat
Turn on your lights
Check your gauges (fuel, temp, warning lights)
Three second delay when the light turns green
Use the horn to get the attention of pedistrians/bicyclists and make eye contact
Keep your eyes moving - dash, mirrors, side windows, front window near and far
Watch wheel to ground prespective (That semi's tire is getting closer and closer to the white line. He might be drifting into my lane)
I need to see if I can find that list.
It wasn't one of the rules, but they also insisted that all company vehicles be backed into parking spaces which really put me at odds with my apartment complex, but that's another story...

What do i usually do...
Unlock car
start car (doors lock automatically)
find something on XM i like
look behind and on the sides for looney pedestrians that have a death wish and/or drivers that seem to not see your reverse lights.
reverse
drive
What drives me insane is when i am half way or more out of a space and some one comes speeding along and whips around you knowing damn well you are backing out.

I burned out leaving the first stop sign on my driver's test...at that point I still hadn't quite mastered starting smoothly with a standard, and the ground was a bit gravelly. :D Anyway, if I recall, he didn't care.
He did get kind of pissed when I put the handbrake on at a long light. :p

1. Unlock and open car door, slide into driver's seat
2. Turn on ignition
3. Adjust Road Trip device
4. Turn on Nano, select music, insert Nano into Road Trip device
5. Snap on seat belt
6. Release emergency brake
7. Check both sides, behind me
8. Put car into gear (usually reverse, if in parking lot at home)
9. Back car out slowly, turn, put car into "Drive" and drive away
I'm the only driver of this car so I don't need to adjust mirrors and all that, but if I'm driving a different car or someone else has driven mine, the first things I do are to adjust the seat and mirrors.

Only problem is legelly speaking when your keys are in the ingition you are supposed to be buckled up. But it more the when you car is put into gear you should have the seat belt on.
hmm I should update my list.
Some where in there is lock doors. Out of habit I hit the power door lock before I pull away.
In the first 8 things I pretty sure door locking is suposed to be on there. To prevent you from be rob at low speeds and incase you are in a car wreck the doors dont go flying open because if it is hit right the levers and stuff can all get moved and open the door. Locking the door puts a physical barrier in there than prevents the doors from opening.
