View Full Version : Feeler: 500MHz TiBook (Mercury)

I've just come into a TiBook, which I really don't need, but was able to obtain quite cheaply.
500MHz G4 Processor
768MB PC133 SDRAM
40GB HD (Probably)
DVD-ROM
15.2" Widescreen
The only problem with the machine at this very moment is that it had a bad PMU (hence why I got it so cheap). Now, not to fret. I've got a fresh new PMU on its way from iFixit. Once that's installed, the machine should work like a dream. I could have parted the machine out, but felt that it would be much better for someone to get a fully functional Apple laptop than for more parts to go on the market.
The reason I say probably for the hard drive is that it didn't have a hard drive when I got it. I've got a 20GB and a 40GB sitting around which could be easily inserted into the machine, and I'd leave the choice to the eventual buyer. For the record, the 20GB has about 4 years of the Seagate warranty remaining, while the 40GB is a pull from a Mac mini, so will be nearing the end of its 1 year Apple warranty.
I've been told that there are no dead pixels, but of course, without the PMU, I can't boot it up to test.
So, anyone interested? I'm really not sure what it's worth precisely.

Its hard to say untill you replace the PMU and see if the screen is fully functional and if there are other problems with the machine.

Couple things to consider: does it have airport? And what is the physical condition of the laptop?

The machine does not have Airport, but it does have a functional PC Card slot. It actually used to have an Airport card, but I sold that separately because the card itself can sell for anywhere from $80-$120 on its own, but only usually adds about $50 to the value of the machine.
Physically, the machine is in quite good condition. No cracks, dings, or dents at all. There is some minor cosmetic scratching on the bottom of the machine, but this is fairly common for a machine of this generation.

I might be interested in buying this depending on how much your looking to get.

are you taking any trades of any kind?

I'm certainly open to trade offers. Not really sure how much it's worth at the moment, hence why it's only a feeler. The primary problem with thinking of a dollar value is that I tend to think in monopoly money (That's Canadian dollars to you Americans out there), so it can tend to skew the understanding on the meaning.

I'd say for $US400-500.

Well, you seem to have a thing for older macs so I'll throw this one out there ;).
I've got my iBook Special Edition Graphite that I love to death, here are the specs
iBook SE
366Mhz
576MB RAM (max'd)
airport wireless
CD-ROM
OS X 10.3.9
As I said, just throwing it out there, I'm always on the lookout for new macs ;)

As for the trade offer, as much as I do so love Clamshells, I've not got a need for more laptops at all at the moment (unless I was offered one that would outperform the 12" Powerbook you see in my sig, unlikely though this may be). As you can see from my signature, I've got PowerBooks a plenty ;)

Okay, well since I see you have 2 pismos, how about a trade for one of them? :D Always on the lookout for new macs to play with.

Trading off one of my Pismos might be an option in future, but not at the moment. This is primarily because both of these machines are "spoken for" in a sense. Pismo #2 is being used for a Picture Frame mod, and as such is not exactly in stock condition. Not stock condition also kinda means not saleable condition. Pismo #1 is on extended leave in England with my fiancee. So, while I might be willing to trade that one off, it's not physically available for me to do so.
This reminds me though, I need to have a look through my Box o' Parts and see just what other pieces I need to construct a functional Pismo. I know I'm pretty close...

Interesting, How could you sacrifice a beautiful pismo to make a picture frame! ;) I made mine out of an IBM thinkpad with 90Mhz P1 and 64MB of ram :D. I'd love to chat about macs and picture frames and pismos in general, heh. If you can, hit me up on aim/yahoo under znalbone.
