According to an article in today's Birmingham News, an Apple Store will be opening at The Summit by March. The article also says that negotiations over a previous space fell through because it was too small by six inches. Sounds crazy, but who knows? They also don't say if this was the rumored store #005 from 2001.

I searched for the article and this is what I found.

Yes, that's the article.

I found it a bit odd that the reporter named Libby Lassiter, who is a principal at Bayer Properties, as a source for the part about Urban Outfitters opening a store, as well as the bit about previous negotiations with Apple. But the article only credits "sources" for the information about the new Apple Store. Still, it's hard to believe that this isn't the real deal.

I wonder how long it'll take to renovate the space, which is still occupied by Eddie Bauer.

I was told that a store might open here in Charleston sc (maybe Columbia). I keep looking but can't find anything. Where can I go to see a list or what can I do to find a list? I keep hoping the sales clerk in NC was correct.
It would be easier for me to drive to Columbia (1 1/2 hours away) than Charlotte (3 hours away).

But it would be better here in Charleston. :D

You're welcome, savanahrose! Sorry, I didn't respond sooner.

Apple has announced the opening next weekend of the Providence Place (http://www.apple.com/retail/providenceplace/week/20060924.html) store, the Village Pointe (http://www.apple.com/retail/villagepointe/week/20060924.html) store, and the Columbia Mall (http://www.apple.com/retail/columbia/week/20060924.html) store. They all will open on Saturday, September 23rd at 10:00 am. The usual giveaways apply.

The Providence Place and Village Pointe stores are the first in their states, and the Columbia Mall store will be the fifth in Maryland. The Rhode Island and Nebraska openings will mean that Apple has retail stores in 33 of the 50 states. New Mexico will be the next state to get its first store.

While mac fans in Rhode Island (http://www.apple.com/retail/providenceplace/week/20060924.html) and Nebraska (http://www.apple.com/retail/villagepointe/week/20060924.html) celebrate their first Apple stores this weekend, and the retail planners in Cupertino celebrate making their target of 40 new stores by the end of FY 2006 (one more weekend to go over target,) I'm interested in two rumors posted this week on ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/). For obvious reasons the possibility of another San Francisco (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2006/09/19/another-architectural-battle/) store intrigues me the most, but the rumor of a store in Portland, Maine (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2006/09/19/another-new-england-store/) would, if true, confirm Apple's plan to reach into small retail markets and have a greater impact for those thirsting for a store in their state.

Also with Apple reaching its target the next logical line of speculation is how many stores by calendar year's end? My guess? 177 by year's end (there are 164 with the three openings today - 9/23.) Here's my list of new openings between Sept. 23rd and Dec. 31st: Fair Oaks, Cherry Hill, First Colony, 29th Street, Topanga Mall, Arndale, West Quay, Bentall Centre, Chinook Centre, ABQ Uptown Mall, Waterside Shoppes, Coconut Point, and Otay Ranch. It's just a guess, but 13 more by the end of the year.

Apple has officially announced the opening on September 30th at 9:00 am of the new store in Manchester's Arndale Centre (http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/manchesterarndale/week/20061001.html). This is the UK's 7th store with two more stores in the process of staff recruitment (Southampton and Kingston.)

Also of interest is the next step in the approval of Boston's high-profile store on Boylston Street as reported at ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2006/09/27/boston-schedules-public-hearing/).

Boston Schedules Public Hearing
Boston’s Redevelopment Authority (BRA) will present Apple’s proposed Boylston Street architectural plans to the public during a meeting on Oct. 4 at Fisher College–about four blocks from the proposed store site. The neighborhood Back Bay Architectural Commission gave the early design its conditional approval, but the BRA has not yet voted on Apple’s application to demolish the existing building and rebuild a glass-front, three-story retail store. The plan has the backing of mayor Thomas Menino, which, in Boston, indicates that the store proposal will eventually be approved.

Recognise a lot of people from the interviews in the pics there.

Apple confuses me....they don't want anyone that knows **** all about macs working in their shops they just want people that are 'cool and trendy'.

Maybe this is why they have a rift of complaints about the dummys they employ and why i was over qualified to work in a shop

Well, a prime piece of commercial real estate has just opened up in Center City Philadelphia...Tower Records has gone bankrupt and looks like the megastore on Broad and Chestnut will be closing. I'm not at all happy about this since there's no comparable alternative record stores in the city. :( But if Apple were to open it would sure help make up for it. I know it's fairly large with two levels, but I'm crossing fingers there's interest and it won't be passed up - these chances won't come along too often.

I lived in Madison, WI. I miss it. My cousin's still live there along with my sister.

How far away are you from the other store? I have to drive 3 hours to get to the closest store.

Thought it was about time to update this list.

It is a list of metropolitan areas, US and international, that have multiple stores or stores planned. It gives a better view of Apple's plans for certain markets. It should be noted I'm using 2000 Census Bureau statistics (table 3) (http://www.census.gov/population/www/cen2000/phc-t3.html) and metro area designations. The most important impact of the use of these figures is that Miami and West Palm Beach were then viewed as separate metro areas; they are no longer. If both areas are combined it gives a better view of Apple's obvious interest in Southeast Florida with six stores located in the area, so this is the one adjustment I've made to the table. I've added the 2000 population ranking (excluding Puerto Rico) of each U.S. area at the end of it's listing (the combining of Miami and West Palm Beach makes this the 10th largest metro area in the US.) I've also listed high-profile stores in red and stores that are confirmed by non-Apple sources in green. All other entries are from Apple's own site (existing stores (http://www.apple.com/retail/) and planned locations (http://www.apple.com/jobs/).)

Apple's "Job Opportunities (http://jobs.apple.com/index.ajs?BID=2&method=mHvexternal.showPickLocations)" web page has five new locations for upcoming retail stores. Of the five, two are confirmations of much rumored locations in Birmingham, Alabama and Cleveland, Ohio. These two locations, The Summit (http://www.thesummitonline.com/birmingham/index.html) and Crocker Park (http://www.crockerpark.com/) Malls, as well as three others in Orland Park, Illinois (Orland Square (http://www.simon.com/mall/default.aspx?ID=189);) Austin, Texas (The Domain (http://www.thedomainaustin.com/);) and Littleton, Colorado (Park Meadows (http://www.parkmeadows.com/html/index10.asp);) round out the roster of new retail stores confirmed by Apple's website. This will be the first store in Alabama as well as the second stores in Cleveland and Austin. It also adds a sixth store to the Chicago metro area and a fifth to the Denver metro area.

here's hoping more stores in Georgia!

You're welcome twodcc. I wish you luck on the Georgia stores.

In news on the retail front, ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/) has a number of interesting tips and reports. First, it looks as if the Boston Boylston Street (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2006/10/19/boston-store-wins-approval/#respond) store has cleared a major hurdle in winning the approval of the Boston Redevelopment Authority (http://www.cityofboston.gov/bra/press/PressDisplay.asp?pressID=341) for the construction of the high-profile store in the Back Bay district.

Also of interest is the tip of an upcoming Charleston, South Carolina (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2006/10/18/apple-pro-active-for-charleston-store/) store in the city's King Street area. If true it would be the first in the state. Lastly, there is ifo's tip of a new Miami area store to be opened in the Bal Harbour Shops (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2006/10/18/apple-aiming-for-classic-florida-center/). Here's hoping all come true.

There is further confirmation of Apple's plans for a new Manhattan store on 34th Street. The old report from the New York Post (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=1987396&postcount=1045) is now seconded by the following report from Reuters (http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=technologyNews&storyid=2006-10-24T215435Z_01_N24220517_RTRUKOC_0_US-PROPERTY-SLGREEN-APPLE.xml&src=rss): Apple to open store in SL Green building in NYC
Tue Oct 24, 2006 5:54pm ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) will open its third Manhattan retail store at SL Green Realty Corp.'s (SLG.N: Quote, Profile, Research) retail joint venture at West 34th Street.

"The team had to negotiate more than six separate transactions and explore the outer reaches of the New York City building code with help of several consultants," Andrew Mathias, SL Green's chief investment officer, said on Tuesday during a third-quarter conference call with analysts.

The deal for the Apple Store west of Fifth Avenue began with discussions of a 50-by-100 square-foot floor plan but the store will end up being 50 to 75 feet by 100 feet, Mathias said.

Apple's Manhattan locations are known for their innovative designs, including a glass cube entryway at Apple's underground Fifth Avenue location and a glass staircase at the computer maker's Soho store....

But as for me, I love running the roads and 3 hours is a piece of cake and gets me out of Charleston for awhile. :D

These guys have Apple Centre status, along with being an Apple Authorised Service Provider, an Apple Authorised Training Centre and Solution Expert education.

At present they are based on the outskirts of Cardiff but in early November will be opening a new store as they relocate to the David Morgan Arcade in Cardiff City centre.

Any more word on the Charleston, SC store?

I just am finding it really hard to believe that Charleston is on Apple's radar.

As far as location, King Street would be the logical spot. It has heavy tourist foot traffic, as well as a mix of high-end national and local stores and boutiques (including Saks Fifth Avenue, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, Sharper Image, etc.) – basically the same stores I see in malls where Apple plops their retail stores.

As far as architecture, Charleston has very stringent requirements for remodeling. Any structure over 75 years old cannot be torn down unless it falls down or is damaged by fire. All buldings must conform to the basic design of their surrondings. In other words, the big gray metal box will never fly downtown. Granted, this is presumably why Apple was meeting with the architecture review board.

On the possible negative side, not only is there no Apple store in Charleston, there is actually no Apple reseller of any sort in Charleston or the surrounding area. Going Apple here means committing to a life of mail-order or driving 3 hours to Charlotte.

I'm not sure if the lack of an existing Apple presence helps or hurts us. I tend to make the connection that a lack of any Apple reseller here means there really isn't a market for one.

So - would the Apple store cater more to the tourists or the locals?

Maybe Charleston is on Apple's radar. I'd just love to have a little more confirmation on that.

More on the troubles around a new location in San Luis Obispo (http://www.sanluisobispo.com/mld/sanluisobispo/business/16044985.htm?source=rss&channel=sanluisobispo_business).

Biz Buzz; Future of SLO Apple store remains murky
The Tribune
The space at 899 Higuera St. in San Luis Obispo — the location of what had been expected to be an Apple Computer store — will be reviewed Monday by the city’s Architectural Review Commission. Plans have changed substantially, however, since discussion began earlier this year, leaving the possibility of an

Apple store downtown uncertain.

"The project is quite modified from the original application," said Jaime Hill, associate planner for the city of San Luis Obispo. "The facade changes are significantly scaled back."

The current design review proposes dividing the 5,800-square-foot location into two spaces — a 4,800-square-foot store at Morro and Higuera streets and a 1,000-square-foot space next door. The proposal also seeks to add a second entrance on Morro Street and fill in the side-street windows with bricks.

With all of the changes, it’s no longer clear that Apple is coming to San Luis Obispo. In the earlier plan by building owner Copeland Properties, the renderings clearly indicated the trademark Apple in the building signage.

"The Copelands are being very close-lipped," said Claire Clark, the city’s economic development manager. "We do not know if Apple is the tenant."

Apple had previously asked to remove an exterior pillar and install stainless steel over the existing brick storefront. The design was initially approved in July by the Cultural Heritage Committee, which set out several conditions for the Cupertino-based retailer to achieve in order to be consistent with downtown design. Changes included reducing or eliminating the use of stainless steel, retaining the windows on Morro Street and keeping the bulkhead in place.

The ball has been in Apple’s court since then. Several meetings with the review commission had been continued as the retailer sought additional time to make design changes.

There remains at least one sign that Apple is coming to the area: The company’s Web site continues to post job openings for the Higuera location.

Calls to Apple Computer and Copeland Properties were not returned by press time.

Apple store gets final Boston approval
Apple Computer Inc. has received approval from Boston's Zoning Board of Appeals -- the last hurdle needed to proceed on plans to build a new three-story store on Boylston Street near the Prudential Center.

Apple is proposing to demolish the building at 815 Boylston Street, which formerly housed a Copy Cop store, and construct a 21,350 square-foot space with a glass facade and green roof.

The zoning board's approval will be finalized in paperwork over the next month and Apple can then start applying for permits. Construction on the Back Bay store is expected to last a year.

Yeah, this store seems to be a great mystery at the moment. Im going to Charleston next week, so I will be on the lookout on King Street for any vacant spaces.

I hope this doesnt take forever to get approved. Retail space down there is few & far between these days. But regardless, its bound to be one of the most unique stores ever, in a super cool location too.

Keep us posted!!

I stolled down King Street on New Year's Eve, and I have to say that there's not a significant amount of vacant buildings. Most of the vacancies were being renovated for future tennants.

Unless, by some tiny little chance, one of these vacancies has already been purchased by Apple, I have a feeling it will be awhile before we see an actual store.

Where do non-mall Apple retail locations usually locate? I seem to think they're usually on corners, or at least in a very prominent location. I do know they're verrrry picky about locations.

If/when we do get a store, I predict it will be between Calhoun and Market streets, as that is the primary retail district. And it will be a regular store, since there's not a snowball's chance in Charleston of us getting a flagship store.

Like I said - I just didn't see any vacant location that was prominent enough for an Apple store. But I am confident that they're looking.

I live in DC at the moment & there are a bunch of stores in the area. All the "free standing" stores here arent on any side streets or corners that I can remember. But, they arent always on real streets either. The one in Clarendon is sorta enclosed in this shopping district area along with a few of other stores, so you cant really see it if you were driving on the main street.

So, that makes me think that you may be right about them putting it on one of those busy connector streets, around King, Market or Calhoun streets. Maybe even further down towards Queen. I noticed King's shopping district is extending both ways FAST.

Apple has begun recruiting staff for its first store in Scotland on its website. The previously discussed new store at 147 Buchanan Street is also well on its way to being approved (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/01/20/glasgow-store-nearly-approved/) by city officials and the prospects for a 2007 to early 2008 opening appear to be good. This will be another Flagship, high-profile store, complete with glass spiral staircase. Congratulations to Scotland! :)

According to Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/2007/01/25/apple-home-depot-pf-guru-in_ps_0125realestateintelligence_inl.html) magazine Apple has changed its plans about a 34th street retail store saying,

Apple And Home Depot Pull Plug On NYC Plans
Peter Slatin, Forbes/Slatin Real Estate Report 01.25.07, 4:16 PM ET

...Sources say image-conscious Apple, which leased the space from a joint venture between SL Green Realty Trust and developer Jeff Sutton, has had second thoughts about the location's coolness and had plans to put the site up for sublease. Apple had planned a 30,000-square-foot, four-story store with about 75 feet of frontage along 34th St., and had signed up to pay rent of about $5.5 million a year. Sutton and SL Green (nyse: SLG - news - people ) control the space on either side of the parcel as well.

But real estate sources say that, from the start, Apple had doubts about the compatibility of its leading-edge image with that of middle-America 34th St., at least as it currently stands. While strong retailers like Gap (nyse: GPS - news - people ), American Eagle Outfitters (nasdaq: AEOS - news - people ) and Forever 21 are happily ensconced along the block, "unfortunately, a lot of the old 34th St.--third-rate tourist merchants and rip-off artists--still remain,” says one long-time retail broker.

That doesn't mean that Apple's business wouldn't have been good. Retail experts believe the store would have done very well, but Apple simply wasn't convinced that the location wouldn't somehow tarnish its image. Like, say, backdated stock options?

Against the backdrop of unfolding C-suite recklessness with shareholder assets, these two tales of high-level caution offer a fascinating perspective on what may be a fading edge. That both Home Depot and Apple had the moxie to make major commitments to these extremely promising stores, but in the end were unable to follow through, speaks volumes about the challenges facing anyone in the search for a new way forward.

Did Gary finally update about the Tulsa store? I've e-mailed him twice since it appeared on the 13th, but I've seen no posts on his site about it. Anyway, it is good that Tulsa's getting a store. Now, if I could just get the Tulsa World interested in the news. ;)

A story in Macity (http://www.macitynet.it/english/aA27086/), that has that annoying ring of truth that bad news often has, states that Apple's first store in Italy, and in continental Europe, will not open until late march because of construction delays.
AppleStore in Rome will open at the end of March
Continental Europe will have to wait more than 30 days to see its' first AppleStore. The opening has been postponed in March. Most likely in the last week of the month.
The first AppleStore in continental Europe will open it's doors on month later than pre-scheduled opening of the Roma-Est shopping center where it's hosted.
The works for the major road adduction leading to the shopping center are late and before the second half of March there's no way for a large public to reach it from the Highway that connects Roma-Est to Roma....

From ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/02/07/australia-store-confirmed/):

Australia Store Confirmed, Located
An Apple spokesman has confirmed that the company has submitted architectural plans to the city of Sydney (Australia) for a retail store. It would be the first store in the Asian Pacific region outside Japan. Spokesman John Marx would not disclose the location of the store, saying only that Apple is working to have the store’s architectural plans approved. Tipsters have identified 367 George Street in the central business district as the location of the store. The building was formerly occupied by the Westpac banking company, and is now scheduled for an $11 million renovation that will make space for an Apple store on the ground floor. The building is about one miles from the famous Sydney Opera House, and has an all-glass façade that is reminescent of Apple’s Fifth Avenue cube, or the future Bolyston Street store in Boston.

ifo supplies no link, but the site has a good reputation on this subject, so this could well be big news for mac fans is Australia. Needless to say this would be the first such store in the country. Good luck.

Thanks, that would be great! The one apple store in KC always seems busy, it just suprises me that they won't open more around here. You're welcome. It wouldn't surprise me to see a second store in the Kansas City metro area, as there are smaller markets with more than one store, but I haven't seen any rumors of it yet. As I said, I'll keep an eye out.

More on the proposed Sydney location from the Sydney Morning Herald (http://www.smh.com.au/news/biztech/the-winner-is-sydney/2007/02/07/1170524145606.html):Apple shop for downtown Sydney
February 8, 2007
Apple is finalising plans to build its first official retail stores in Australia, with at least one set for Sydney.

Recent media reports have suggested the iPod maker is also planning to open a shopfront in Melbourne, but the company would not confirm or deny this.

"We have submitted concepts for the store we'd like to build in Sydney and are working with the city to gain their approval," Apple spokesman John Marx said.

"Our stores are a huge hit in the US, Canada, UK and Japan, and we look forward to bringing the unique Apple retail experience to customers in Australia."... It is looking good!

No retail stores in France?
Last I heard, there was the possibility of a store this year in Paris on Beaumarchais Blvd. The Champs Elysées has been rumored to be a target for Apple to open a store, but the right location hasn't opened up as of yet. Rest assured, Paris will get a store soon.

Sydney Store Revealed - Exclusive
After four months of work, Apple has received final approval on designs for a retail store located at 367 George Street in downtown Sydney (Australia). The architect’s drawings and photo rendering show a three-level glass façade that closely resembles the proposal for the future Boston (Mass.) store. The storefront includes a white Apple logo delicately suspended in the middle of the glass panels. The store will offer two levels of products, with the Genius Bar on the third level. View exclusive drawings and a photo rendering here (http://ifostore.cachefly.net/sydney_plans/index.html).

anyone know whats going on with the Boston store?

Last I had heard was that there had been approval of Apple's plans by all the various City Zoning boards, but construction had not begun. Anyone near the location who can go by and give us a report? Still no posting of job positions for the store.

Among the retail stores on the ground floor is an Apple store....

Kansas (Kansas City - 1,776,000)

??? Huh?

Kansas City isn't even in Kansas. It's on the border, but the population on the Kansas side is like 20,000 or something.

Wichita has 2.7 million people and growing. I just drove 2.5 hours to Oklahoma City today with two kids to play with a Mac Pro before I buy one. There are two big malls to build in here in Wichita (I would choose Towne East since it has higher-dollar stores), and there's a big enough population here. Probably big enough to support a standalone store. It was not an enjoyable trip (tolls, traffic, freaking loads of time and money eating out, gas -- ugh)... An Apple Store in Wichita would be a hit.

The purpose of the list you quoted from is to show states that could get their first store and the largest metro area that could be the place for such stores. Often metro areas, such as Kansas City, overlap state borders, and even if the bulk of the metro area lies on one side or the other it is still the size of the market that attracts store planners to the location. This is especially true in the placement of a store such as the Christiana Mall (http://www.apple.com/retail/christianamall/week/20070218.html) store in Delaware. It is the size of the whole Philadelphia market that brought the store, not the relatively small population that lives across the border. The situation in Kansas City is analogous, and likely represents the best bet for a Kansas store.

For those who haven't seen it, ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/) and Archintosh (http://www.architosh.com/) are playing host to a web cam (http://ifostore.cachefly.net/boston/index.html) of the construction of the Boylston Ave. store in Boston. Here is a shot of the state of destruction of the old building, clearing away the location for the sparkling glass structure to be built this year.

The situation in Kansas City is analogous, and likely represents the best bet for a Kansas store.

Kansas City already has an Apple Store (Country Club Plaza), leaving a metro population of close to 3 million people in Wichita still a 2.5-3 hour drive to an Apple store. A trip to my closest Apple Store costs me about $75 in gas and food. I can't shell that out whenever I want to get my Apple answers in-person or pick up some new hardware without a long shipping wait and added costs.

Wichita, Kansas has a metro area of three million people? If that were true it would likely already have a store. The 2000 census had it at under 600,000. I have it listed as the 19th largest US metro area without a store, or just now coming into view as a likely target for Apple to place a store there. It isn't even close to KC in size, but it may get a store before KC gets its second, and even if doesn't there is no guarantee that a second KC store would be placed on the Kansas side of the border. This is all guess work based on past trends, but I'm not confident of either scenario this year. What I am confident of is that Apple will get around to markets both the size of Wichita and placing a second store in the KC market. As long as the stores make money for Apple they will grow.

btw, here's the list of the twenty largest US metro areas without a Apple Store or one officially planned.**

New Orleans, Louisiana
Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina
Dayton, Ohio
El Paso, Texas
Bakersfield, California
Allentown/Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Harrisburg/ Lebanon, Pennsylvania
Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
Toledo, Ohio
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Youngstown/Warren, Ohio
Sarasota/Bradenton, Florida
Little Rock, Arkansas

Apple has begun recruiting staff for a new store at the Midsummer Place (http://www.mkweb.co.uk/midsummer_place/home.asp?r=14921) shopping centre in the Buckinghamshire city of Milton Keynes. Apple currently has nine stores (http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/storelist/) open in the UK and is also planning to open a store this year in Glasgow - to bring the total to at least eleven by year's end.

Yeah, my brain was thinking too fast. The STATE population is about 3 million. NO CLUE what I was thinking. The entire metro Wichita area is about 850,000, according to the dude from city hall I talked to when setting up my business when I moved here four months ago. (Granted, he was probably skewing the numbers higher considering his position.)

My bad.

Did Gary finally acknowledge the Tulsa store? I tried to get him to post it a couple of times to no avail, but you see something on his site about it? It is in the Woodland Hills mall, and such stores usually take 6 to 9 months from the beginning of staff recruitment to opening. That would fit with a summer opening date. If you can visit, post some pictures if you can, ok? Always love to see macrumors members' picts.

ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/02/25/midwest-store-coverage-enhanced/) is reporting Apple will open its first store in Kentucky at the Oxmoor Center (http://www.oxmoorcenter.com/html/index4.asp) in Louisville. Although this is yet to be confirmed by Apple, this would be big news for long suffering mac fans in the blue grass state. As readers of my posts know, Louisville has for far too long been among the top metro areas on my lists (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=3375873&postcount=392) of areas without an Apple store, so here's hoping this rumor is true. Apple has begun hiring staff for five new locations on its website. This confirms some previously reported rumors and some new surprises. The new stores will be in Louisville, Kentucky (Oxmoor Center (http://www.oxmoorcenter.com/html/index4.asp);) Los Gatos, California (23 N. Santa Cruz Ave.;) Holyoke, Massachusetts (Holyoke Mall at Ingleside (http://www.holyokemall.com/);) Madison, Wisconsin (West Town Mall (http://www.shopwesttowne-mall.com/shop/westtowne.nsf);) and Huntsville, Alabama (Bridge Street Town Centre.) This is the first store in Kentucky and only the second store location acknowledged in Alabama (the Summit in Birmingham has been known for a while but is still unopened.) The West Town location is the first store in Wisconsin outside of the Milwaukee metro area and only the third planned for the state (Bayshore Mall in suburban Milwaukee is expected to open this year as well.)The Holyoke Mall store is a confirmation of a store posted on the mall's web site last year and is the first Massachusetts store scheduled to open outside of the Boston metro area. And finally the Los Gatos store has been rumored, but this confirms the first new opening in the SF Bay metro area for quite a while.

iPhil, I see the page, but Gary hasn't posted anything on the main page, and this after I alerted him twice about the listings. Don't know why. Anyway, you can apply for the store through Apple''s website.

Lastly, ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/02/25/another-pennsylvania-store-located/) has a new location it has posted that I can't yet confirm from either Apple's or the mall's website, but given their record it bears watching.

They may be “closing all the factories down,” but they’re opening up an Apple store next to Allentown (Penn.) at the Lehigh Valley Mall. The region of almost 800,000 residents will host the fifth Apple store in the state, and expand Apple’s products beyond just the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia regions. The mall just underwent a $40 million expansion and renovation that added a lifestyle center and a total of 1 million square-feet with over 130 shops. The store should open by the holiday shopping season. That's number 7 on my list in post #392 (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=3375873&postcount=392)

I've been looking forward to Apple's new store in Calgary's Chinook Center for a while now in anticipation of a spring opening, but I was shocked to see that all job positions for the location have been pulled from Apple's web site (http://www.apple.com/jobs/ca/index.html). There is nothing on monster.com (http://www.monster.ca/) as well. Does anyone know if there is trouble with this store opening? I thought the location in the mall had been identified, and if that is true and anyone can take a look to see what's happening and post it I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

With stores in malls the average time is six to nine months. That assumes no construction delays. Recruitment of staff has occurred in the past followed by cancellation of a given stores plans, but usually this is a reliable indication that a store will open within the above time frame. Which means a summer opening is likely.

When Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer spoke at the recent Morgan Stanley Technology Conference one of the few tidbits of information he let drop is that Apple plans to open "a little over 10 (http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/03/07/apple.retail.to.expand/)" (eleven or twelve?) stores outside the US. Not only would that be a record in one year, but it leaves a lot of room open for speculation of where these stores are going to be located. Apple has recruited staff for stores in Glasgow, Rome, Calgary, Sydney, and Milton Keynes (UK) so far this year, but the Calgary store is no longer among Apple's listings and appears to be delayed - if not cancelled. That leaves four stores accounted for and seven to eight unknown. A possibility is the opening of the previously acknowledged Zurich location and/or the opening of Calgary late in the year. But even with these added in we have five or six locations for which we are without a clue. Does this mean we will finally see a Paris opening this year? Will there be any new Japanese stores? Vancouver? Or how about Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, or something completely off the radar? Regardless, it looks like Apple is finally getting serious about its international retail effort.

Apple is now recruiting staff for three new stores. The first is in the Mall of Georgia (http://www.simon.com/mall/default.aspx?ID=208), in the Atlanta suburb of Buford. This would be the fourth store in the Atlanta metro area. The second is in the Natick Collection (http://www.natickmall.com/html/mallinfo.asp) Mall in the Boston suburb of Natick. This will bring, along with the upcoming Boylston Store, the total Boston metro area stores to nine. The last is in the Chicago area suburb of Deer Park (exact location unknown.) Sorry, savanahrose, no word on Charleston. There is this rumor from ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/stores/chronology.html) about a new store in South Carolina, but I can't verify it as of yet.
Haywood Mall (http://www.simon.com/mall/default.aspx?ID=206) - Greenville, SC - A super-regional mall of 1.2 million square feet operated by Simon Property Group along I-385. The mall has 150 shops and draws from a six-county region. In late Feb. 2007 tipsters said Apple is in lease negotiations with the mall for an unknown space. It would be the first Apple store in the state.

Sorry, if I've already mentioned this rumor, but I can't remember if I posted it and I'm too lazy to check at the moment.

From today's San Francisco Examiner (http://www.examiner.com/a-632741~Apple_wants_store_in_Marina.html):
Apple wants store, 'genius bar' in Marina
Mar 22, 2007 3:00 AM (5 hrs ago)
by Alexandria Rocha, The Examiner

SAN FRANCISCO (Map) - An Apple retail store — complete with a sleek glass façade and an in-house “genius bar” — may soon border the renovated Marina Theater on Chestnut Street.

Apple Inc. is hoping to open its third San Francisco retail store in the former Walgreens on Chestnut Street near Steiner. Apple opened stores on Stockton Street and in the Stonestown Galleria on 19th Avenue in 2004.

The San Francisco Planning Commission will hold a hearing on Apple’s proposal today.

A spokeswoman for Apple said the company is “excited to bring the unique Apple retail store experience to the Marina district.”

If approved, the new Apple Store would coincide with a much larger revitalization project on the 2100 block of Chestnut Street: Walgreens is moving one building over to occupy the first floor of Cinema 21, which closed in 2001 but is reopening on its second floor under the original name, Marina Theater, this fall.

“Chestnut has been undergoing a renaissance,” said Jordanna Thigpen, commissioner with The City’s Small Business Commission and owner of Mask Italia on Chestnut Street. “Apple is going to put Chestnut on the map.”...

This has been rumored before but this is the first public confirmation of the store. It still has hurdles to clear before it is certain.

I'm going to N.Y. this summer and can't wait to go to one of those stores! I live in Miami so there are 2 i have not been to and one inside a mall so its nearly as impressive as the the others and they are building a new one in Ft. Lauderdale which is 30 min from Miami. But i visit there a lot since I have relatives there.

As anybody who lives in Cardiff (and isn't blind) will know, there's an absolutely massive retail development taking place in The Hayes opening in 2009 (by Spillers and our current Apple Reseller). I know AT is a Premium Reseller, and from all I can tell do an excellent job of it, but I would not be surprised to see a proper Apple Store going up there.

And believe me, if there is, I'll be first in line for a job at the Genius Bar.

Vancouver!!!
come on guys... 3 stores in toronto before Vancouver??!! wtf??

From 2001 census information:

Population, metropolitan areas:

Toronto: 5,113,149
Vancouver: 2,116,581

Population, municipalities:

Toronto: 2,481,494
Vancouver: 545,671

And that doesn't include the additional 700,000 in Hamilton, 330,000 in Oshawa or 180,000 in Barrie (slightly more than the 160,000 in Abbotsford, the next largest metropolitan area in the Vancouver region). Three stores in Toronto before the first in Vancouver seems about right.

Here is the updated list of upcoming FY2007 stores. Apple has announce it will open approximately 40 stores during the FY 2007, with seven stores to open in this quarter. The following list shows stores already opened in red,) and upcoming stores confirmed by Apple's own listings (including stores with officially announced opening dates in gold, stores in the process of staff recruitment in green, and new locations which have only been listed as upcoming retail sites in black.)

...34. West Towne Mall - Madison, Wisconsin...

Any way to tell when the ones in "Sea Green" might actually open up...particularly #34 (as you may have guessed)? This article (http://www.thedailypage.com/daily/article.php?article=5817) from the Isthmus (a Madison weekly) says that "Apple is notorious for playing its cards close to its chest when it comes to its new retail locations, generally announcing their existence and timeline for launching mere days (or weeks) before their doors open. The company has not announced a Madison location yet, in fact, and it's certainly months before the store is scheduled to open." We're now almost two months away from when that article was published, so hopefully official word is on the horizon. There still advertising for Managers, etc. so maybe it's still a ways a way.

Well, let me know if you got any info.

thanks,

No real information, I can only say what is usual for such stores. This is a store inside a mall and these usually take six to nine months from posting (March 1st in this case) to opening. That would make a September to December opening most likely. Stores have opened as quickly as three months after the posting of jobs, but that is very unusual. I hope that is of some help.

Well, hopefully it'll be the latter (i.e. 3 mos.) rather than the former (i.e. 6 to 9 :( ). The March 1st date is not necessarily the original posting date, only the first reported posting date, afaik. Just trying be optimistic. :)

Anyway, we'll have a store here at some point and that's a good thing! Thanks for the (not real) info!

In today's financial call VP Peter Oppenheimer announced that Apple will open a new store in NYC's meat packing district located at 14th Street and 9th Avenue. ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/04/25/third-nyc-store-planned/) puts this in the Western Beef Building (http://www.rkf.com/listings/NEW/401W14St_main.asp) at 401 West 14th Street. This is to be Apple's 3rd store in Manhattan and 4th in NYC. There have been two false starts at 34th street and in the Flatiron District, but this store having been announced by Apple would seem to be on more solid ground.

Latest UK Store Revealed
Residents of Liverpool (UK) will no longer have to make the 35-mile drive to Manchester to enjoy an Apple store–they’re getting their own next year when the sprawling Liverpool One urban project opens in city center. The project is more than retail, also encompassing 42-acres of residential, office and open space set among five distinctly-designed districts. According to the developer, it’s intended to create, “a new and compact focal point for urban living and leisure in the 21st century Liverpool.” It will be the 14th store in the UK, behind the nine existing and four other planned stores.

I second that! Haywood is an OK mall, but sorry, its not quite up to the standards to be the first place to get an Apple Store in SC. Maybe later on, but the first store in the state HAS TO BE on (or around) King Street in Charleston. Its just the right thing to do. That place just craves an Apple Store & so do the people.

What the hell is taking Apple so long with this?? Do it!

It doesn't have to be in Charleston. Somebody sounds a little jealous to me. Apple is going to build their first store later this year in South Carolina at Haywood Mall in Greenville. The store will most likely be located on the first level near the food court. This is great news for me, seeing how I live in Greenville. Last year, Haywood Mall went through a multi-million dollar renovation that changed the entire appearance of the mall and attracted new retailers such as Pottery Barn and Williams-Sonoma. Haywood Mall's leasing area is over 1.2 million square feet, which makes it the largest mall in South Carolina and one of the many reasons why Apple has chosen to build their first South Carolina store at this location.

Greenville before Charleston? You've got to be kidding me.

Haywood Mall, while pretty large, has never been what I would consider an upscale mall.

Ugh. If Greenville gets a store before Charleston, I'll be annoyed. Greenville already has a CompUSA and an Apple reseller. Nowhere else in SC has anyplace to purchase Apple products.

Of course, this could mean that there's already an established user base in Greenville. But no. That's just crazy talk.

Yep, you heard it right. Greenville is going to get one before Columbia and Charleston and the first one in the state. :p If you think Haywood Mall isn't upscale, then you obviously haven't been there lately. You should take a trip and check it out. ;)

I'm so excited about the upcoming NYC store in the Meatpacking District, as it's just one avenue away from me (though saddened by the loss of Markt that used to be there, which I used to have brunch at a lot). From the proposed artist rendering of the store I've seen, it looks like it's going to really dominate the area, and really define the District. Wise move for Apple -- as Meatpacking is the fastest up-and-coming neighborhood, and is super hip and trendy now.

Anyone know the target month the store is supposed to be completed?

So, do you have any proof whatsoever to backup that statement?? Cause there is proof all over the place that Apple is interested in Charleston for its first SC store.

Wanna make a bet that Charleston gets one before Greenville?? And im not jealous, I dont live in SC at all. I just know what I see.

Well....

Haywood Mall in Greenville is owned by Simon Properties. And Apple and Simon sort of have a retail crush on each other. Malls also tend to be a bit more fluid in their occupancy.

King Street in Charleston is over 90% occupied - possibly over 95%. Plus, Apple is notorious for looking for the absolute most perfectest location for their stores. There's also the BAR (Board of Architectural Review) in Charleston that will force Apple to come up with a unique exterior store design to fit into the existing streetscape. (There's no chance in hell of the stainless steel storefront appearing anywhere in downtown Charleston). These things take time.

With that in mind, Greenville could very easily see the first retail store in SC. But that doesn't mean Apple will be abandoning Charleston. It just may take them awhile to find the right location and get a store design approved.

And if it means waiting another couple of years just so Apple can design a store that looks better than the Greenville store, it will be worth it </rationalization>

One of these is the store in New York's Meatpacking district and another is a confirmation of the previously rumored store in the Lehigh Valley Mall (http://www.lehighvalleymall.com/) in Whitehall, Pennsylvania. By Alex Davis

The Courier-Journal

Kentuckians who want to buy an iPhone at an Apple retail store will have to either visit another state or wait until the end of the summer.

The state's first Apple store, planned for Oxmoor Center on Shelbyville Road, is under construction but won't be finished by Friday's launch of the iPhone. The stores also sell iPod music players and Macintosh computers, software and accessories, and offer a full range of training and repair services for other Apple products.

Officials at Oxmoor Center, which is owned by General Growth Properties, have been working for several years to land a coveted Apple retail outlet for Louisville.

"Apple is going to be a tremendous traffic generator for us," said Lisa Cofer, senior marketing manager for Oxmoor Center and nearby Mall St. Matthews. "It is a destination store."

The Apple store will have about 5,000 square feet of space, Cofer said, and it is expected to open in August. It will be in the Macy's wing of the mall, in a slot formerly occupied by Kirkland's Home and across from Eddie Bauer.

"Glasgow Store Construction On-Track
Thanks to Martin for the photo of construction work on the future Buchanan Street (Glasgow, Scotland) retail store. The interior structure of the store has been reconstructed, and it appears the flooring has been put in and then covered with wood. However, the electrical and other work work is still in-progress on both the lower and upper mezzanine levels. Based on the construction and other information, the store could open before the end of this year."

From the Honolulu Advertiser (http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070703/BUSINESS08/707030340/1071):
Apple plans to open store in Waikiki

By Andrew Gomes
Advertiser Staff Writer

Fresh off its launch of iPhone sales, Apple Inc. intends to expand business in Hawai'i with plans for a store in Waikiki that would be the company's third retail outlet in the state.

Apple recently applied for a building permit to construct a store at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, which is slated to finish an $84 million renovation in December that is adding major new retailers and restaurants to Waikiki's largest mall.

The expansion plan would give the California-based manufacturer of Macintosh computers and other devices like the iPod media player perhaps its highest profile store in Hawai'i in a location visited by many of the state's 7 million annual visitors....

It's been about a year since it was first rumored, but is there any more information on an Apple Store in Charleston, SC?

Or Haywood Mall in Greenville?

Or anyplace in SC?

I've been away for a while, so in hopes of catching up here are the announcements of Apple's retail openings this weekend - Orland Square (http://www.apple.com/retail/orlandsquare/week/20070722.html) in Orland Park, Illinois; Briarwood (http://www.apple.com/retail/briarwood/week/20070722.html) in Ann Arbor, Michigan; and the previously mentioned opening of the Holyoke (http://www.apple.com/retail/holyoke/week/20070722.html) store in Holyoke, Massachusetts. All stores are scheduled to open at 10 am on July 21st and will have the usual giveaways to the first 1,000 people.

Also, there is an announcement by the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut that there will be an Apple store in the MGM Grand expansion.

Foxwoods, Apple partner

An Apple Store will be part of the MGM Grand expansion opening in May at Foxwoods Resort Casino, casino officials announced Wednesday

The casino recently began a promotion to give away a new Apple iPhone every 10 minutes between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Labor Day.

An Apple kiosk will open this fall in the existing casino's retail area. When the MGM Grand expansion opens, it will become the only Apple store in Eastern Connecticut. The two closest locations to the region now are Farmington and Providence, R.I.Norwich Bulletin (http://www.norwichbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070718/NEWS01/70718017)

Lakeside Store Location ID’d In UK Mall

The location of the future Lakeside Shopping Centre (UK) Apple store has been identified as the 5,000 square-feet that retailer Woolworths just relinquished after a downsizing. Apple will officially occupy space #245 on the second level, the left portion of the former Woolworth space, and adjacent to Carphone Warehouse. The trademark black construction barricade has just gone up, and the store could be ready by the holiday shopping season.
