Great news, but can I ask how it is confirmed? It's not on Apple's site, it's not on the mall's site, and I don't see it in the local papers. Where do you get the confirmation?

This is a very likely location, btw. Simon malls are a favorite of Apple's and Greenville is the largest metro area in the state. I'd just like to have something I can link to for confirmation.

A person I know went to a meeting last week and held documents in his hand for the store. He wouldn't reveal the location, but i'm pretty sure it's Haywood Mall with all of the rumors going around about one locating there. Link: http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=40535

I actually don't doubt that Greenville is getting an Apple Store – and Haywood Mall would not surprise me a bit. But "A person I know" holding documents is hardly a reliable source.

Chances are, something will trickle out in the local media soon.

ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/08/06/new-tampa-metro-store-planned/) points out a story in the St. Petersburg Times (http://www.sptimes.com/2007/08/02/Pasco/Some_familiar_names_f.shtml) that reports Apple will be opening a new store in the new mall "Shops at Wiregrass" scheduled to open in August of 2008. This not only will be the second store in the Tampa/St. Pete metro area, it also will be the largest US metro area with only one store to finally get its second and the last 2000 US census metro area with over 2 million people to get a second store. Looks like Apple is filling out its retail plans.

ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/08/14/san-antonio-finally-on-the-map/) is reporting the following:San Antonio (Tex.) is the country’s fourth fastest-growing large city, and an obvious choice for a second Apple store to serve the city’s 1.3 million residents–and now they’ll have it. Apple has committed to opening a store at the super-regional North Star Mall on the city’s north side, about 10 miles from the existing La Cantera store. The mall claims to have been the country’s fifth shopping mall when it opened in 1960. The Apple store could open mid-summer 2008.

No confirmation yet.

From AppleInsider (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/08/15/source_apple_to_build_double_decker_flagship_in_montreal.html):

Source: Apple to build double-decker flagship in Montreal

By Kasper Jade
Published: 12:00 PM EST
Apple Inc. is finalizing plans for its first Canadian flagship shop, a spacious multi-story retail outlet to be located in the heart of Montreal, a source tells AppleInsider.

The Cupertino-based gadget maker is reported to have secured some 9,300 square feet of space along the 1300 block of Rue Ste-Catherine Ouest, where it plans to heavily alter -- but not raze -- an existing structure.

According to a set of initial design plans, the company has proposed that the ground floor of the building be raised and that existing column structures on the property be relocated. Plans also call for the building to receive a new roof and stainless steel facade.

On the interior, Apple's proposal calls for two stories of retail sales space to be joined by a trademark glass staircases, similar to the one found at its SoHo, New York and Regent Street, London locations.

Office space, a back-end stock room, and bathroom facilities will consume a portion of the 9,300 square feet, trimming the retail sales area to approximately 8,000 -- leaving the Montreal location a couple thousand square feet short of Apple's Manhattan-based shops.

Although Apple presently operates four retail locations in Canada, none of the stores are designated as flagship locations. Montreal would represent just the 10th high-profile location for Apple, joining its eight existing flagships spread across the U.S., U.K., and Japan, as well as a ninth under development in Manhattan's Meatpacking district.

Apple's flagship shops have been strategically placed in the world's most densely populated shopping districts and are conceived as projections of the Apple brand with their architecture and interior design. Each year, the company spends an undisclosed sum on marketing costs for the the high-profile locations, ranging up to $10 million.

Unexpected delays withstanding, Apple hopes to begin operating out of the Montreal location during the summer or early fall of next year, according to the source.

Definitely. :D It'll be cool to check out when visiting my parents. And the Montrealer in me can't help being pleased we got it instead of Toronto, heh.

Now when the heck is Philadelphia going to get a downtown store??? We have a prime vacancy at 17th and Walnut near Rittenhouse Square, next to Burberry. It's exactly the location Apple would/should go for. Small, but it's not going to be a flagship anyway I presume.

But in the meantime, any news re. the Cherry Hill opening?

The Glasgow Apple store is nearly finished it could be a possible end of August opening

Logo Installed at Glasgow Store

Construction is nearing an end at the future Buchanan Street (Glasgow, Scotland) retail store, with the giant, back-lit Apple logo the latest item to be installed over the front entrance. A photo by Duncan Sinclair shows the logo going up between the entrance columns of the historic building that was built in 1842. Also check a more complete set of photos by alasdair, which also shows that the interior is finished, including the mezzanine Genius Bar. Based on tipsters’ reports and these photos, the store could open by the end of August.

Since they did that in a historical building in Glasgow. I wonder what the hold up is with one in Charleston SC?

Just got back from the Glasgow store... and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt!

Err... and one of the new keyboards. I wanted to try one of these suckers out before shelling out the cash.

The new iMac looks alot better in the aluminum than on the Apple site IMO. I noticed that most of the hardware on display was with the base config - except the Mac Pros (naughty Apple) which were bumped up to 2 GB.

It was quite busy with the innitial surge, but the queues were winding down by the time I left around 11 am. The famed glass starecase was looking a bit the worse for wear - light rain all morning and a mod of people trailing gunk in off the street not helping...

First chance I've had to play with an intel Mac Mini. Have to say, the performance was excelent - way better than my humbel G4 1.42 model. Thankfully I've got this Mac Pro now. :D

Off to play with the new keyboard as I probe the capabilities of Numbers :apple:

Went and checked out the Deer Park store today. It was a big smaller than the Woodfield store I usually go to, but it's closer to home, so I'm happy it's opened now. It was pretty busy today. I heard one women ask an Apple employee "Why is it called the iPod touch?".

Also, I didn't get a t-shirt :(. They stopped handing them out just as I got there.

Latest rumor from ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/09/15/apple-looking-at-downtown-atlanta/):
Apple Looking at Downtown Atlanta
Apple retail execs are in negotiations with a trio of developers who are building a 35-story condo/retail project along the Midtown Mile in Atlanta (Geo.), according to a tipster. The 1010 Midtown development will include 443 luxury condos, and 38,000 square-feet of ground floor retail space that could open in Spring 2009. The project is part of a multi-block project by the developers, and a coordinated city redevelopment of 14 blocks into an urban shopping and residential district that could eventually rival Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.

UK Store Opening Set

The new Princesshay (Exeter, UK) shopping center will hold its grand opening on September 20th, but mall management says that seven stores won’t open that day, including the Apple retail store. Instead, mall manager Sally Henley told a local newspaper that Apple would open “a few days after” the September 29th opening of the Virgin store. A weekend opening would put the date as October 6th.

Apple has officially announced the opening of the new store in the Touchwood Centre (http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/touchwoodcentre/week/20070923.html) in Solihull, UK (a suburb of Birmingham.) The opening will take place this coming Saturday, Sept. 22nd at 9:00 am. The usual T-Shirt giveaway will apply along with a grand opening sweepstakes.

P.S. - Lara F. I'll be glad to send you a pm if I can find out any information about the Cherry Hill opening. I've been watching both Apple and the mall site and I haven't seen anything yet, but I expect an opening very soon. I will, of course, post something here as well.

ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/) has two very interesting rumors I'd like to relay to macrumors members. First, the Apple retail fan site has a report it reposts from MacBidouille (http://www.macbidouille.com/news/2007-09-19/#14987) about a possible developments concerning Apple's much anticipated Paris store (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/09/19/apple-movement-in-paris/).
Apple Movement in Paris?
The France-based MacBidouille Web site is reporting that Apple has abandoned plans for a retail store in the Opera District of Paris because they couldn’t reach an agreement with city officials on architectural approvals. Now the company has focused on the Carrousel du Louvre, a shopping center beneath the Tuileries garden and adjacent to the Louvre museum. Thanks to Vincent for translating that one of the mall’s great advantages is that it’s one of the few locations in Paris where stores can remain open on Sundays. Apple has planned a Paris store almost from the beginning of its retail initiative, but has never been able to find the perfect location.

Second, the site confirms Apple's continuing attempt to open a store Portland, Oregon's Alphabet Historic District (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/09/18/second-try-on-portland-site/).
Second Try on Portland Site
Over a year after an unsuccessful attempt to win approval for a retail store in northwest Portland (Ore)., Apple has submitted revised architectural designs for a store at the same 437 N.W. 23rd Street address. This time Apple has substituted ebony-faced brick for gray stone and has added a canopy to the design of the 5,000 square-foot, 1.5-story building on the corner of 23rd and Glisan Street, all intended to better blend in with the neighborhood. Apple proposes to demolish the current, historically insignificant building, but must win special city approvals for the new building because it’s located within the Alphabet Historic District. more » (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/09/18/second-try-on-portland-site/)

MikeTheC, not being an aficionado of Doctor Who, an obvious mac fan, I had to look that one up. I'm sure it's got be scheduled for opening soon. ;)

I must protest in the strongest possible coffee that Solihull is it's own Metropolitan area (or People's Free Republic as I prefer). This slur on my home town has made me write to my MP and I shall complain unceasingly until I am blue in the tie! :)

Some Silhillians (as we are known) can get very touchy about that (it's a good way to wind someone up!)

And thankfully we have nothing to do with Torchwood (very few Welsh aliens around here).

Anyway, anyone else going to be there tomorrow morning?

ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/2007/09/27/dc-store-location-spotted/) is reporting a rumor that Apple "is now finalizing a real estate deal for a flagship store" in the Georgetown area of Washington D.C. If true it would continue Apple's pattern of Flagship stores in urban centers of the major US metro areas surrounded by smaller stores in the suburban areas. With Boston already on the way, and now DC, can Philly be far behind?

DC Store Location Spotted
Our nation’s capital is ringed with Apple stores in Virginia and Maryland, but until now has not hosted a store within the District itself. Apple is now finalizing a real estate deal for a flagship store on what’s called “the best corner of the most powerful city in the world,” at Wisconsin and M Street NW in the city’s Georgetown area. The space at 3501 M Street NW is now occupied by the legendary Nathan’s Restaurant, a Zagat-rated, wood-paneled hang-out for those who crave American classic cuisine. The restaurant’s lease expires in April 2009, and the operation will vacate before year’s end, leaving a 2,500 square-foot lot for Apple to develop.

The area is booming, especially with in influx of high-end retailers, some destined for the Shops at Georgetown Park mall in the adjacent block. The space is owned by the Heon family, which has reportedly been charging Nathan’s $20,000 a month for the three-story building. DC real estate experts say the area has become too expensive for restaurants, forcing Nathan’s owner Carol Joynt to find another spot.

The land is assessed by the city at $519,000, and the building at $788,050.

The building is not heritage classified, so it would be a fairly simple matter for Apple to demolish the building and put up a new structure. Fortunately, the Shops at Georgetown Park includes a 650-car underground parking garage, in the midst of an area with very limited street parking.

Check this Web page (http://www.img.tv/nathans/index.html) and video for more information about Nathan’s, and the Q & A Cafe that has made it even more famous.

Yeah, I have wondered that too. I have pretty much dealt with Double Click for all my Mac needs for years now. Problem is, this new store is just going to be way to convenient for where I live.

I hope in the long run though that Double Click still comes out doing well as they have been around so long in this area.

Apple's picking
Washington Business Journal

An Apple Store is coming to Georgetown.

Princeton Investment Corp. sold 1229 Wisconsin Ave. NW to Apple Inc. on Sept. 27, according to a source close to the deal. The French Connection clothing store now occupies the space. Princeton, a European investment group, has owned the property since 1995.

The company and Apple had been negotiating for several months, sources say.

The Georgetown store will join other Apple locations in Tysons Corner, Pentagon City and Bethesda.

This a different location than was previously rumored by ifoAppleStore (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=4252400&postcount=570).

Two new juicy rumors about New York City stores - Apple's favorite city. First, the New York Post (http://www.nypost.com/seven/10102007/business/bklyn_gets_apple__barneys.htm) has an article telling of Apple's attempts to open its first Brooklyn store in The Edge (http://www.williamsburgedge.com/) in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.

B'KLYN GETS APPLE, BARNEYS
RETAILERS IN TALKS WITH WILLIAMSBURG CONDO THE EDGE

October 10, 2007 -- APPLE and Barneys Co-op are both negotiating for their first stores in Brooklyn.
Sources said the two retailers have been in ongoing discussions to locate to the new residential property The Edge in Williamsburg, which will have 75,000 feet of new retail.
There are 1,350 residential condo units under construction planned for that property and as many as 2,500 coming within a two-block area, including two Toll Brothers projects.
The Edge goes along Kent Avenue from North 5th Street to North 7th Street, right near where the funky shopping district along North 6th Street will eventually lead to the water taxi.
The Livanos Restaurant Group - known for Oceana and Molyvos - is also negotiating for one of the spaces that sources said have asking rents from $60 to $100 a foot.
Barneys is exploring opening a more than 9,000 foot co-op, while Apple's reps at Madison Retail Group have been spotted checking out a corner store of between 3,000 and 5,000 feet.
Tenants won't get possession, however, for another year.
Robert Greenstone of Greenstone Realty, who is handling the retail for Jeffrey Levine's Douglaston Development, did not return calls before press time.
A Levine spokesman gave us no comment.

But don't think a Brooklyn expansion means Apple is finished with Manhattan. It looks like Apple's plans for a store at 21 West 34th Street might just be hot again. ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/2007/10/09/is-34th-street-active-again/#more-2456) reports that Apple has applied for permits to make use of the location that seemed to be put on hold.

There are mixed signals about Apple’s intentions for 21 West 34th Street in New York City–it was identified as a possible store location back in December 2005, and everything seemed to be “go” to demolish the 1922-era building and build a three-story store there. But in January 2007 Forbes reported that Apple had backed out, believing the location lacked a “coolness” factor. Now permit, financial and architectural sources indicate Apple will locate there, across from the Empire State Building, as part of a larger development costing up to $125 million.City permits have been issued to a firm to erect scaffolding around addresses at 21-23 W. 34th St., and the adjacent address of 25 W. 34th St.Financial records filed with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) show that in December, 2006 Wachovia Commercial Mortgages Inc. issued so-called “pass through” certificates totaling almost $2 billion, including a $100 million mortgage at 5.76 percent over 10 years to refinance existing debt held by two limited liability partnerships formed to develop the two properties.According to the loan documents, Apple would be the sole tenant of a 27,900 square-foot building, with a lease through January, 2022....

New York City! Who loves you, baby? Apple does. ;)

From Chicago Business News (http://chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/news.pl?rssFeed=news&id=26738):

Apple eyeing big store on State Street

iPod maker among retailers in Block 37 talks

Apple Inc. aims to put down roots on State Street as part of the Block 37 project.

Joseph Freed & Associates LLC, the Palatine-based developer of the retail and residential portion of the project, is in talks with Apple, as well as a host of other higher-end retailers including Coach, Puma, J. Crew and Zara, sources familiar with the plans say.

Landing marquee tenants like iPod- and iPhone-maker Apple would be a major coup for Block 37, a seemingly jinxed Loop parcel that defied development efforts for decades. Apple also would give State Street a dose of the cachet found mostly on Michigan Avenue.

"To finally, ultimately hit a home run on this hugely notorious site is a boost for the entire city," says Michael Shields, an executive vice-president with Chicago-based retail brokerage Northern Realty Group Ltd.

The status of the talks with Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple and the other retailers couldn't be determined. Sources say Apple has engaged a broker to negotiate a lease for a store as large as 6,000 square feet of ground-level space fronting State Street....

OK, first the news, Apple has begun recruiting staff for the first Vancouver, B.C. store in the Pacific Centre (http://www.pacificcentre.com/home/index.ch2). This has been widely expected, but this is the first we have seen of Apple's effort to open a store in British Columbia. This also starts the the normal 6-9 months countdown to opening. You heard it here first.

Next, with the opening of Apple's 200th retail store (the San Tan Village store -- remember when they said this would be a disaster that wouldn't last more than a year?) it is time to update the list of upcoming stores. So, here is the list of upcoming FY2008 stores. Apple has announce it will open approximately 40 stores during FY 2008 (the same rate it has tried for in the last few years.) The following shows stores already opened in red,) and upcoming stores confirmed by Apple's own listings (including stores with officially announced opening dates in gold, stores in the process of staff recruitment in green, and new locations which have only been listed as upcoming retail sites in black.)

The Mall at Partridge Creek - Clinton Township, Michigan - opened 10/18
Lakeside Shopping Centre - Greys, United Kingdom - opened 10/20 San Tan Village - Gilbert, Arizona - opened 10/26
Town Square Mall - Las Vegas, Nevada - opened 11/14
2125 Chestnut Street - San Francisco, California - opened 11/23
West 14th Street - New York City, New York - opened 12/07
Fair Oaks Mall - Fairfax, Virginia
Cherry Hill Mall - Cherry Hill, New Jersey
Crocker Park - Cleveland, Ohio
367 George Street - Sydney, Australia
Midsummer Place - Milton Keynes, England
Bridge Street Town Center - Huntsville, Alabama
Churchill Square - Brighton, England
Princesshay - Exeter, United Kingdom
The Oracle - Reading, United Kingdom
Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center - Honolulu, Hawaii
815 Boylston Street - Boston, Massachusetts
Beijing - Beijing, China
Mall of Louisiana - Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Grand Arcade - Cambridge, England
Pacific Centre - Vancouver, British Columbia
Town Center Plaza - Leawood, Kansas
Friendly Center Mall - Greensboro, North Carolina
Liverpool One - Liverpool, England
77 Bahnhofstrasse - Zurich, Switzerland - postponed
Chinook Centre - Calgary, Canada - likely CANCELLED

The following are upcoming stores confirmed by mall websites, public documents, and press reports. No word from Apple on any of these or a word on possible opening dates as of yet. Unless they get derailed by planning difficulties, they appear to be locations of future stores.

Any word on when the new Apple Store at 401 W. 14th Street in NYC will be open? The space is under construction, but the last time I looked at it, it looked like there's still a long ways to go. I suppose it's possible it could be open in time for the holiday shopping season, but they'd need to maintain a very aggressive construction schedule to do so.

The latest word on the 34th Street location seems to indicate that it will be part of a new 30-story tower. If that's the case, it will be at least a couple years before that's open. It seems like sort of an odd place for Apple, given that the other retailers in the area are along the lines of Old Navy, K-Mart, and Payless Shoes. Hardly the luxury retail market that surrounds the SoHo, Fifth Avenue, and 14th Street stores.

It will be nice to see Apple finally come to Brooklyn, although I understand their new Williamsburg store will be much smaller than any of their Manhattan stores. They certainly have a market; half the hipsters I see riding the L train are sporting iPods, iPhones, and MacBooks.

The first is in the Kansas City suburb of Leawood at 119th & Roe (Town Center Plaza (http://www.towncenterplaza.net/Index.asp?IdS=00219D-82E45D0&x=010|000&~=)), and the second is in the Friendly Center Mall (http://www.friendlycenter.com/) in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Leawood site is the first in the State of Kansas, but the second in the Kansas City metro area. The Friendly Center store will be the first in the Greensboro metro area, but the fourth in the State.

With the new Kansas site here is the list of US States without a store or one planned (from most populous to the least, and the State's most populous metro area)

South Carolina (Greenville/Spartanburg - 962,000)
Mississippi (Jackson - 440,000)
Arkansas (Little Rock - 583,000)
West Virginia (Huntington/Ashland - 315,000)
Idaho (Boise - 440,000)
Maine (Portland - 243,000)
Montana (Billings - 129,000)
South Dakota (Sioux Falls - 172,000)
North Dakota (Fargo - 174,000)
Alaska (Anchorage - 260,000)
Vermont (Burlington - 169,000)

The previously rumored new store in the Liverpool One (http://www.liverpool-one.com/Home) mall is now recruiting staff on Apple's website. This is the first official confirmation of this store and will make 18 confirmed UK locations (12 already open, 6 pending.) If the normal timeframe from the beginning of recruitment to opening plays out in this case, a late spring or summer opening is likely.

i still can't believe downtown seattle doesn't have a mac store anywhere. the nearest one is by UW, which really isn't that close to the heart of downtown. pretty techy city, surprising. didnt even see a new one planned on that list.

Great news about the Milton Keynes store! It still had the black boards covering the shop last week. I'd like to be there on opening day, but yeuch! I hate that place on Saturdays, especially the ones just before Christmas. If you're going by car, get there early as parking spaces run out rapidly.

There are many rumors that a Little Rock, AR and Greenville, SC store are in the near future, but nothing confirmed yet.

Greenville's will open sometime in 2009 Magnolia Park Town Center. It was originally going to be fall of 2008 but has been changed.

Good for Greenville.

Now what about Charleston?

I actually know of a fairly prominent upcoming vacancy on King Street. If I had to guess, Apple is waiting on a couple of specific locations to open up. I suppose the question is whether or not 301 King Street is one which they have their eye on.

ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/2007/11/29/another-store-another-island/) is reporting that the new Victoria Square (http://www.victoriasquare.com/home.php) complex will host Ireland's first store.

Another Store, Another Island
November 29th, 2007

Apple is finalizing negotiations with developers to locate a retail store in the Victoria Square complex in Belfast (Ireland), the first store in the country. The store is now assigned space UG5 on the second level of the new 800,000 square-foot set of buildings in city centre that includes 98 shops, residential and office space, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues, all converging on a 115-foot dome. Ironically, Apple already has a huge presence in the country, employing thousands in telephone technical support jobs. The complex, between City Hall and the River Lagan, will open in March 2008, but the Apple store will open later in the year.

Thanks to ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/2007/12/06/future-expansion-new-international-stores/) for pointing us to a fascinating post by engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/06/apple-store-14th-street-press-preview/) about the 14th Street store opening. In it VP of Retail Ron Johnson is quoted as saying,We asked Ron Johnson, Apple's Senior VP of Retail, about how the growth of Apple into kiosks at other retail establishments such as Best Buy is impacting Apple Retail, and he responded that there's "plenty of room" for both, since Apple just had its best quarter ever in Mac sales and at Apple Stores simultaneously. He did say the ratio of new stores is going to move a bit more in the international direction, since there's a lot of room to grow there.emphasis added

It makes a lot of sense for Apple to go in this direction, and ifo continues along this theme with the following:His remark comes on the heels of an interview (http://idgnow.uol.com.br/mercado/2007/12/03/idgnoticia.2007-12-03.4731640443/) with mall developer Carlos Jereissati Filho, who said two Apple-built stores will open in Sao Paulo (Brazil), with the first opening this month at the Shopping Iguatemi mall. The second store will open in 2008 in the Shopping Marketplace mall. Next, tipsters report that Apple is now negotiating with Reichmann International for space in the Torre Mayor office complex in Mexico City. It’s the tallest building in the city and include 33,300 square-feet of ground floor retail space, where Apple may eventually locate. Lastly, there are three new stores planned for the UK, at the huge Westfield London mall opening in late 2008 northwest of that city, in the Covent Garden district of London, and another in an unverified northern city.
Other than Johnson's remarks there is no confirmation as of yet by Apple on this.

When is the Reading, Berkshire store going to open? No word yet.

From the New York Post (http://www.nypost.com/seven/12192007/news/regionalnews/apple_of_upper_w__sides_eye_796388.htm):

APPLE OF UPPER W. SIDE'S EYE
By LOIS WEISS

December 19, 2007 -- Upper West Siders will soon have an ultra-hip tech mecca of their own.
The Post has learned that Apple is erecting another monument to iPod, Mac and iPhone addicts on the northwest corner of Broadway and 67th Street.
Displacing a Victoria's Secret shop, the proposed Apple Store follows behind locations in SoHo, the Meatpacking District and the flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Midtown.
Sources say Apple plans to put up a new building - which has architecture-buffs wondering if one of Apple's trademark glass designs is on the drawing board.
And just like Apple's previous locations, the Upper West Side store should have ample floor space and plenty of hidden nooks-and-crannies for hipsters to hang out, work on their novels - and of course, hook-up.
