Migrate iMac 266 mHz OSX 10.2.8 to G5 iMac OSX10.4

I wish to transfer data but have 2 problems.

1. Apple does not mention migrating via ethernet cable-only Firewire. My dated 266 iMac has only ethernet.
2. Apple says to make sure your older computers firmware has been updated. My 266 does require a firmware update to safely use OSX, however, even though I'm running OSX I cannot recall having ever updated this 266's firmware. Firmware does not show in my System Profiler. Now, to update it requires I have OS9 running for the install and I don't own any OS9 install disks. What is the importance of having firmware installed prior to migrating data?
