WASHINGTON (AP) — White House chief of staff Andy Card has resigned and will be replaced by budget director Joshua Bolten, President Bush announced Tuesday amid growing calls for a White House shakeup and Republican concern about Bush's tumbling poll ratings....

The move cames as Bush is buffeted by increasing criticism of the drawn-out war in Iraq and as fellow Republicans have suggested pointedly that the president bring in new aides with fresh ideas and new energy. Not sure what this will mean in terms of a shakeup in the Bush administration. Since Card was Chief of Staff, it could signal more staff changes down the road. However, most of the policy decisions came in consultation with people like Condoleeza Rice, Dick Cheney, etc....cabinet or elected officials. The only staff appointment I can think of that this might not bode well for is Karl Rove. And even that's highly speculative, since Bush is fiercely loyal to and dependent on Turdblossom.

And "fresh ideas"? Please. This is perhaps the most stubborn, unreceptive administration in history.

So what this is meant to accomplish...

I wouldn't read too much into it. Card was on the verge of becoming the longest-serving chief of staff in White House history. He's probably just worn out.

sounds like a good move for the WH: even if nothing actually changes, the appearance of change will sate some in the GOP for a while.

Some people think it doesn't have anything to do with Bush at all. It looks like he's going to work for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign...

Interesting. Sounds a little on the early side to me 3 years out, but I guess political campaigns are long beasts.

Yeah, that makes sense, bushco's numbers are the lowest of any second term president and we're supposed to believe that the departure of his chief of staff is just so he can promote a struggling governor. Of course it's all attributed to people close to him but they are unwilling to use their names and of course, posted on an extremist blog.

Find some neutral confirmation of this and I might take it seriously.

and the band played on... (http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/03/20060328-1.html)

Tomorrow I'm going to deliver a third in a series of speeches about the situation in Iraq. During Saddam Hussein's brutal rule he exploited the ethnic and religious diversity of Iraq by setting communities against one another. And now the terrorists and former regime elements are doing the same -- they're trying to set off a civil war through acts of sectarian violence. But the United States and our Iraqi forces cannot be defeated militarily. The only thing the Iraqi insurgents, as well as the terrorists, can possibly do is to cause us to lose our nerve and retreat, to withdraw.

I'm going to discuss how the Iraqi people and our coalition continue to work together to build a stable and free and prosperous Iraq. I'll remind the people we're not going to lose our nerve. The stakes are high; we will complete this mission. Our strategy for rebuilding Iraq is comprehensive, and it includes a commitment from all parts of the federal government.

You obviously haven't been to Vancouver. Ok, so it gets chilly and rainy in the winter but it's actually somewhat warmer than Seattle and Grouse Mountain is right at your doorstep. Much less Wreck Beach...

I heard there was even some speculation that Card may be interested in running for governor... Mass? Somewhere around there.

As for what this means for the Bush administration -- not a lot. Bolton is from the same inner-circle that Card was, Bolton has been with the Bush campaign since before 2000.

Somehow I don't think this will satisfy the Republics who have been calling for a shakeup in the WH. They sense that their asses are on the line. If Bush doesn't turn things around they are in trouble since they are so closely aligned with Bush.
