View Full Version : Tibook hard drive replacement advice
Mar 29, 2006, 02:57 AM
I just wanted to get someone else's opinion on what I should do here.
I currently have a 1ghz tibook with its original 4200 RPM, 60 GB hard drive. That's not cutting it anymore, so I am trying to upgrade spending less than $150. I am trying to figure out which would be better for my $150:
A 7200 RPM, 80 GB drive, or
A 5400 RPM, 100 GB drive
Also, would I notice a big difference between a 8 MB and a 16 MB cache on a 5400 RPM drive?
Any advice/opinions would be a great help. Thanks! :D

My Roomate had the same dilemma and ended up getting the 7200RPM 80GB
for his 17" PB G4 which he says makes a very noticible difference in the quickness & "snappiness" of the computer... He is one to try and squeeze every ounce of speed out of his machine.
If your doing on the go video work, or labor intesive work, go for faster.
otherwise I personally feel that the extra 20GB in a Laptop is well worth the slower speed & extra 8 MB cache. Thats alot of extra space.

The bottom line is, go 7200rpm if you feel your computer is too slow now, and could use an extra kick. I put one in my older Powerbook Ti and it felt much more responsive, but then again it is 667Mhz. The 5400 would be good if you value more space over a slight speed increase.

Or you could always get a 100gig 7200rpm laptop Hitachi or Seagate
I have a 60 gig 7200rpm Hitachi in this 550mhz Tibook
And it's flying on TIger and one gig of ram. Very responsive.

Do you have problem with disk space or speed?
In terms of space, 60GB->80GB does not sound to me like much of an upgrade. 60GB->100GB sounds more like it.
I have a Seagate Momentus 7200rpm 100GB installed on my TiBook 867 (the smaller brother of yours). Very noticeable "snappiness" improvement. I'd say go with a 7200rpm 100GB/120GB upgrade.

Thanks for everyones posts, but after doing a little more research, I found a 100 GB, 7200 RPM drive that is only 30 bucks more than my original price range.
I couldn't make up my mind on whether I wanted speed or size more, so I figure I might as well wait a little longer, save a little more money, and get the best of both worlds.
They have the Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 on zipzoomfly for only 170 with free shipping. Anyone got any experience with the 7K100?
barefeat gave it a great review, but I was wondering if any of you had an opinion on it.
Thanks for all your help!
