Convert Xvids?

whats the best way to convert avi movies and xvids? I want to output it to a tv, so im guessing mpeg4 will be best.. i tried handbrake but it didnt work..

divx doctor 2.0 works I think. I used it to convert avi to mov file format. woohoo!
