I'd like to raise the argument that Apple computers are indeed "Personal Computers", and if I remember correctly, the Apple II was the first (or at least one of the first) PCs.

Sorry for the quality, it's a cellphone.
Anyways, pictured is my hackintosh tower, currently booted into Windows 7, on my 26" tv.
Yes, I use an Apple keyboard for Windows, I'm normally on Snow Leopard on it anyways.

But what if the only PC you own is a Mac?

Then you don't have anything to post a picture of... Seems self explanatory.

My Actual Personal Computer: Mac Pro 5,1 2.8Ghz Quad.

Macbook Pro, Acer 21.5 inch (1080p) + 17" Dell (1024 x 1280).
You can't see my Logitech speakers. Those Dell ones are for the other desktop (look at third image)

Nothing like using an AP environmental science book to raise your monitor a few inches :D

http://i56.tinypic.com/2yn4ffq.jpg

I couldn't find my iPod Mini, but here you see my iPhone 3GS 32GB, iPod Touch 1st Gen 8GB, iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB, iPod Nano 1st Gen 2GB.

Under my desk:
http://i51.tinypic.com/14c9oom.jpg

Free printer from Apple, my custom build desktop (see signature for specs), some boxes with ink/toner/software/extra hardware and on the far right, you see my Dell Dimension 8400. (Pentium 4, 3.2ghz; 1GB RAM; ATi x300 128MB, 160GB HDD)

If anyone is interested to see what inside of my custom built PC looks like, just let me know

More Apple products to come! :D

Here they are!
I didn't do any "cable management" for the simple reason ... I don't really care haha. Well actually, I did that build when I was 13... so yeah.

Just so you have an idea regarding what you are looking at:

GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD3 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
Intel Core i5-750 2.66GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor
Diablotek PHD Series PHD650 650W Power Supply
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
PNY GeForce GTX 260 VCGGTX260CXPB Video Card
ZEROtherm CORE92 Socket 1156/1366 HDT Cooler

Yes, I did just copy and paste that from order invoice from Newegg. The email is dated from Jan 19 2010. Wow, time sure flies! Seems like I got this yesterday.

No he didnt, as this thread can also include a lot of computers that dont run Windows e.g. the SGI Fuel by my feet. After all, you can post SGIs, old Sun boxes, Apple ][s here - all of them are Personal Computers and non-mac, so fit this thread, but their also not Windows PCs either.

There are better things to post on MR than snarky comments about someone's alleged laziness. The search system on this forum sucks more than a hooker using a vacuum cleaner, and MRoogle has been in endless cahoots as of late. Give the guy a bloody break.

I don't have full desk/monitor shot unfortunately. Monitor was a Samsung PX2370 LED. I sold off my last beastly PC rig for the iMac in my sig. Honestly, I miss the PC rig a lot.. but ONLY for gaming. Everything else however, the iMac is winner.

And this rig here was the last water cooled rig I built, I def. miss this one, was very, very quiet.

That's a pretty disappointing letdown. That's not the Alienware I once remembered. They would have had all black interior and incredible cable management. Not fruity cables. However... what sort of temperatures does the Alienware produce? CPU, Ambient etc...
Something like...
http://www.techtalkz.com/gallery/files/1/alx_cc-3.jpg

Your Alienware case looks not too shabby from the outside... but terribly dated 90's from the inside. Looks like it's made out of steel?

I always thought Alienware would have matched this type of quality.

I completely switched to OSX recently so I got rid of my Windows 7 laptop and desktop. Therefore, technically this is my Windows setup now:

It's not my own car, actually, (I'm 16 :D) nor is it my dads, but a friend of his asked me to create an update disk for his Audi A6 (navi, phone etc.) so that's why it's there. :p

It's a great car, though, and the quattro (4WD) even lets you drive through 10+ cm of snow (I've experienced it last year, with that same Audi A6)!

Yeah, Quattro is great like that. I drove the A8 a couple years ago on some twisting back roads, and it gave a sense of security that I just haven't found in any other car.

This isn't the best setup in the world but here goes;

Two windows laptops (Samsung)
Samsung 24"
iPhone 3GS (16GB)
iPad 1 (16GB)
iPod Touch (64GB)
Apple wireless keyboard
Apple wireless mouse
Apple earphones

Will be replacing the 24" with a Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display is around 5 months time and will be replacing the two Windows laptops with a Macbook Pro next year.

Oh and if I have a Mac and Windows laptop in the same setup, is it classed as a Mac or Windows setup?

Thanks, comments are welcome :)

Impressive cable management. The scary part is the case is so empty it's so tidy. Airflow must be great like that.

That laptop has better specs than your iMac??

Unless it was a spec situation I don't know why bootcamp wouldn't be the option to use?

Not sure if you have to use Windows for work or not, but I do everyday and remote almost everyday. I use a Windows computer to VPN/RDP all the time. It just works better. Believe what you will, but it is true. I also use it for gaming, but I have used OSX for everything else for years. It is what it is.

Boot camp, while works, can be a PIA at 1:00 AM when your help desk calls you.

If you want silence don't use the supplied fans as they are awful, get a couple of AP-15s and run them at 1000. or less.

My i5 760 (1st gen) runs at 47C on the hottest core while running Battlefield 3 maxed out, so the H80 should be even better.

I completely switched to OSX recently so I got rid of my Windows 7 laptop and desktop. Therefore, technically this is my Windows setup now:

Image (http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6746/dscf0475lc.jpg)

There it is running Windows 98 and Office 97 in all of its glory. I use it for playing GTA IV, Crysis and other games that won't run on my iMac or Macbook.
Old post, I know, but I can't help but think that the glory days of laptop design were in the late 90's. Sure, they were thick heavy beasts, but something about the roundness that most manufacturers used look so much better then the "defined, clean lines" that seems to be all the rage these days. To me, that (HP, I think it is? My eyesight sucks.) looks much better then the MacBook sitting next to it.

I'm only 19, but an old timer stuck in the past at heart. :p

Some pretty impressive set-ups here. I've never owned a Windows machine cause I never needed to. I've used Windows tons of times going through high school and college but was always Apple Mac at home. (Public and Middle schools were Mac and HS too but by the time I got to HS the two school boards in my city amalgamated so my HS switched to Windows). Nonetheless I've always wanted to have MS Windows at home to be able to learn it but I can't ever see myself installing it on my Macbook Pro.

I still don't own a Mac but I will soon as I plan to purchase the new and upcoming Macboook Air. So I have had Windows in my home for awhile. I've had bad experiences with pre-built desktops in the past. So a few years back, I did a lot of research and built my own machine. Now I love Windows so much. It is fast and, in my case, easy to use. I've never had such experience with pre-built PCs. So, I say if you wish to try and experience Windows, and want it to be a desktop, build your own. It is not difficult and you have the freedom to download only what you need and want. :)

Buying from a manufacturer often gets you a lot of junk pre-installed is what he's getting at.

As for price, it depends on what you want. For anything good, at least $500 and you could easily go into the thousands of dollars.

You should start off with looking at different components you are going to need for the type of work you will be doing on your pc-the motherboard, hard drive, video card, fans, cases etc. New Egg (http://www.newegg.ca/Store/Computer.aspx?name=Computer-Hardware) has a good video to get you started.

There is also a guy on YouTube who works in a Canadian electronic store called NCIX. He has a lot of I formative videos. The channel is called NCIXcom, he has a few good build guides.

$500 should work for you unless you plan on going for the latest and greatest. Subscribe to Newegg's newsletter as they always have deals on anything you may need. Thats how I got most of my parts.

Thanks for all the info. There are no NCIX stores where I am but there are PC Cyber and Canada Computers stores. I don't think I would want super high end given that I don't care to play games too much. I just think it would be really good to learn Windows (whether MS is going downhill or not. lol) I've used Windows many times but I've never really tinkered with it. I also think it would be cool to "build my own" machine cause I like to mess around with stuff like that. To know how things work and what does what. What I don't want to deal with is all messy wiring that seems so common in PC towers. That's what I love about the Mac Pro. No wires to mess with or get tangled and stuff. I'll look into it and see if it's something I'd really like to pursue.

Excuse the iPhone quality and the state of the desk! But this is what my setup realistically looks like when I'm getting things done. In this case, messing about with an Ubuntu install on my old laptop.

Main PC on the left = Acer M3400, 6 core 2.4GHz AMD Phenom II, 8GB RAM, Blu-ray, GeForce 315

Laptop = Sony Vaio VGN-NR10E, Dual core 1.6GHz Pentium, 2GB RAM, X3100 graphics (this thing is actually hackintoshed to a stable degree and no longer runs ubuntu)

Secondary PC on the right = Acer X3200, Quad Core 1.8GHz AMD Phenom, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA 9200 graphics

Bit of a change up from what it was before. Just bought myself the LG IPS234V display! I was worried 23" would be too much of a step up from the 18.5", but I find myself used to it after just a day or two. In all her glory. My T410. I know this is sacrilegious, but this Thinkpad is the best computer I've ever owned, never a hardware problem, never a software/Windows problem, never a virus. I've been very very very impressed. I do wipe it clean every 6 months though with a fresh install which helps a lot. Can't wait for another Mac one day though. This machine has done everything I've asked it to and more. Never even a power shortage when running 4-5 Vm's at once with Windows itself working hard. I'd love to test drive an i7 MBP though. I bet I'd be even more impressed. :p

Radeon HD 7950 3GB
i5 3.4 GHz quad-core and 8GB RAM
1 TB HD 7,200 rpm and optical drive
Asus 24” LCD VW246H monitor
Windows 7 Home Premium
Logitech G500 mouse and SHARKOON Skiller Keyboard
AS Rock PRO4-M motherboard with Cooler Master Elite 430 case and CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 600W

And, how about a pic?!

I have always used Apple computers (except for a period in 1986...with the Amiga), but back in the late nineties (96-97) the dark days of the Macintosh platform took place, so i used a Wintel system with WebObjects for a little while. Worst experience ever (Windows 98) and i switched quickly to a Performa.

I never looked back.

But that G4 has to be the most beautiful computer you've ever owned... right? :D

The only Windows computer in my house is my HTPC. Runs Windows 8 (for fast booting), with XBMC as the front end. I do all the controlling of the HTPC using the remote that came with my TV (using a PulseEight USB CEC adapter)

The box itself is an Intel NUC DC3217IYE, mounted to the back of my TV.

Picked up 3 BenQ XL2420T 120hz 2ms Professional Gaming Monitors on sale for a really good price. My rig was long overdue (2 years) for a tri-surround setup. Next, I'm updating my rig with 3 GTX 780's next week, and in September... Ivy Bridge e 4930k and Asus RIVE mobo. That should feed my 120hz monitors with some good FPS.:p

What game is that on the iMac?

Yeah, the keyboard is phenomenal.

The speakers I just bought to have some, since anything was going to be better than the build-in from the laptop. But they've really grown on me, the sound is great at a pretty low price for the speakers+sub. I might get a new set later this year since I'm an audiophile. :D

Hi

The Lenovo is just installed in a docking station like the one in the top left corner here:
http://support.lenovo.com/ContentResources/images/docks.jpg

My monitor, speakers, mouse and keyboard is just connected to the dock, so whenever I put the laptop in it, it will be connected to all the peripherals.

Hi,

If I may ask, how do you go about getting your Lenovo to work with it closed and still being able to use it with the Dell monitor?

in power management settings you can change what the computer does when the lid is closed. basically you set it from sleep to do nothing and it will keep running with the lid closed.

Kinda belongs in both Mac and Windows setup threads, but I think Windows dominated here...

Nothing fancy. I only bought the monitor that is on the desk. The rest were given to me/taken from my school (they gave me permission of course)

So here are the pictures. Specs and what is here will be after http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/24/ta2yruqa.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/24/dade4uhy.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/24/4apunede.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/24/eza5ave7.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/24/3unepa6y.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/24/zaqaraby.jpg

It's honestly nothing fancy.

The desktop is obviously custom. It was what I could afford at the time. I recently bought a new motherboard, case, and graphics card.

Here are all the parts

ASRock H61MV-ITX motherboard. Cheap!
Intel Core i5 2310 CPU
HIS AMD Radeon HD 7870 GHz ed. 2GB
Corsair Builder series CX500 500W PSU
64GB Corsair boot SSD (don't know the model)
1TB Seagate storage drive
250GB WD Blue hard drive, for Android stuff
ASUS DVD-RW drive
Bitfenix Prodigy case (Orange of course!)
And that's it!

Mouse: Logitech Performance MX
Keyboard: Logitech G510
Microphone: Samson Meteor Mic
Headphones: Beats Solo HD
Joystick: MadCatz v.1 or something...
Controllers: generic 360 controller and the Guitar Hero X-plorer (not pictured)
Drink cooling device: USB Mini Fridge
Monitors: Acer S200HL, HP 2009 19" monitor, VIZIO 22" TV

Now for the Mac portion

11" MacBook Air 2011

Core 2 Duo 1.6 GHz
4GB RAM
128GB SSD

Mouse: BlueTooth Mighty Mouse
Headphones: Apple EarPods
DVD drive: LG DVD-RW external drive
Monitor: old Dynex (I think) 19" TV. It works ok

That's the Mac setup.

Other devices:

OUYA Game Console

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (hopefully to be traded soon!)

iPhone 5 16GB Black and Slate

There is also a pair of BlueTooth Plantronics Backbeat GO headphones

The rest of the stuff is just random junk.

How do you feel about this case - I was eyeing it, but I scoped out the case in Microcenter and it feels...I don't know. Cheap? Toyish? Something about the rubberized handles and how much they flex didn't impress me.

But it is a really nice size.

I'm a huge fan of soft touch, so I like the rubberized handles. It's made to be a more fun case, that's why they have all the colors. It's not like the CM HAF series where they want that tuff look. It's a beautiful case though. The flexing handles are better in my opinion than hard plastic. Metal would be a little better but then the price would be really high. I personally like it, people that see it immediately question what that "thing" is, and when they hear it's a computer they want one. It's really a nice case. Easy to work inside. Believe it or not the hardest part was plugging in the graphics card PCI power. The rest was probably the easiest pc build I have ever done.

If you do but it, the only problem I had was that both included case fans used 3 pin fan connections. My board is cheap and only has one case fan header, but that probably only applies to me. And it was easy enough to take a spare molex fan and plug it in there

Yeah, I've been looking at it for an mATX build (they're coming out with an mATX version and I like the increased RAM on mATX boards) - I was looking at the CM HAF case, but it's *enormous*.

My stuff doesn't compare to most of yours, but a did a lot of upgrades! I built a new desk from some left over MDF board and bought a ton of carbon fiber off eBay. Then I bought some new stuff!

Specs of the main PC
Bitfenix Prodigy
Asrock Mobo
Intel Core i5 2310
8GB RAM
64GB Boot SSD
1TB Storage hard drive
0GB Broken decoration hard drive (in the window of the computer)
AMD Radeon HD 7870 GHz edition w/ aftermarker Arctic Cooler S1 cooler
Custom sleeved power supply

Peripherals
Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2014 Battlefield 4 edition
Razer Naga Epic wireless mouse (carbon fiber on a bit of it)
Razer Tartarus
Samson Meteor Mic
Cyborg V1 joystick
Cheap Dell speakers
Two Dell 23' 1080p IPS monitors
LG External DVD drive
Beats Solo HDs
other stuff.

There's also a secondary computer (used for printing or guests who need access to it), that's just a standard quad core system I built. Nothing special.

Also pictured are some random accessories, a Nexus 7 (2013) and a bowl of candy.

Here's the pictures, ill put a couple more in a second response.

Will do! I used a heatgun to melt the vinyl and then pulled it around the corner, then after that it might make a little edge. But you can either cut it and fold it under or let it stick then trim it off. I have some extra so I'll take pictures of the process. I'll post pictures of the corners later tonight

Took me a while to post my water cooling enhancements and updates... plus the Asus Rampage IV Black Edition X79 board was delayed over a month.

Acrylic tubing, and the art of bending is new to me... so it took me while to get the bends right... and cut tubing to the right lengths. Not as easy as good old soft tubing, but the results are worth the effort.:)

My stuff doesn't compare to most of yours, but a did a lot of upgrades! I built a new desk from some left over MDF board and bought a ton of carbon fiber off eBay. Then I bought some new stuff!

Specs of the main PC
Bitfenix Prodigy
Asrock Mobo
Intel Core i5 2310
8GB RAM
64GB Boot SSD
1TB Storage hard drive
0GB Broken decoration hard drive (in the window of the computer)
AMD Radeon HD 7870 GHz edition w/ aftermarker Arctic Cooler S1 cooler
Custom sleeved power supply

Peripherals
Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2014 Battlefield 4 edition
Razer Naga Epic wireless mouse (carbon fiber on a bit of it)
Razer Tartarus
Samson Meteor Mic
Cyborg V1 joystick
Cheap Dell speakers
Two Dell 23' 1080p IPS monitors
LG External DVD drive
Beats Solo HDs
other stuff.

There's also a secondary computer (used for printing or guests who need access to it), that's just a standard quad core system I built. Nothing special.

Also pictured are some random accessories, a Nexus 7 (2013) and a bowl of candy.

Here's the pictures, ill put a couple more in a second response.

hey, how do u like the Samson Meteor Mic?

Yea, I have looked at the blue yeti. Its 150 bucks in canada. I am not really interested in spending quite that much for gaming once in a while. I can get the Samson Meteor Mic for 70 bucks. That's more my style.

Its a great choice then, it's very sensitive so make sure you monitor your sound every once in a while so you aren't melting the ears of those you are talking to. Luckily the knob on the front is there!

Sort of, its like a sensitivity toggle. I've noticed that it will "turn down" the background noise more than your own voice. For instance if there is a TV on in the room next to the one you are in, the TV will be heard, but then if you turn down the sensitivity the TV will eventually not be able to be heard. It's kinda weird

I like the Surface Pro a lot, although let me make it clear that it's not for everyone. The mistake that people make is that they try to group this device with a tablet or an Ultrabook. It's neither so of course it will fall short in both categories. It's in a league of its own. If you are looking for a just a notebook, the MacBook Air is the way to go. If you are looking for just a tablet, then the iPad Air or Nexus 7 is what you should get.

I travel a lot for work and my company relies on Outlook (for Exchange) and Excel a lot. No matter what anyone says, Outlook 2011 is still not up to par with it's Windows counterpart and the same can be said about Excel. Having to run Parallels or boot into Windows through Bootcamp is not ideal since it shortens the battery drastically.

On some trips, I try to travel as light as possible and taking the iPad Air with the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard would be the perfect solution, however the Safari mobile browser is very limiting on some websites and there is quite a bit of compromise on productivity apps. The iPad Air would be great to take on vacation if I wanted to look at email, social media, etc. Speaking of traveling, the cool thing about taking the Surface Pro on trips is that you don't have to take it out of your bag through TSA screening since it's considered to be a tablet so it saves some time.

Now that I have the Surface Pro, I've been using my MacBook Air less and less and have been leaving the iPad Air at home to just read in bed and I just take the Surface on the go. With Dropbox or SkyDrive, all my work follows me no matter what system I'm on anyway. I know some people may not believe this but Internet Explorer has come a long way. IE 11 is a joy to use and I like it a lot better than Safari and Chrome. Safari on the iPad Air in iOS7 crashes a lot. Chrome has been a clusterf_k lately as well on the Mac (not sure how it is on the PC).

Hope that answers your question!

I'm using a Coolermaster Quickfire TK with brown keys, it is a bit pricey but I have been incredibly happy with it, the design of it is very intuitive as it incorporates the arrow keys into the numberpad allowing you to switch between them as you wish to.

Would not go back to a rubberdome keyboards now after trying mechanical, the difference in them is amazing.

Hello there, I have used blue switch on my Filco a few years ago; my finger tips were numbed after a few hours of typing. You should try brown which is some kind of combination between blue and black; brown switch is much better for me. Also, CM quickfire does not feel very good for me; I bought one for my friend yesterday, tried it and I don't like it very much. Take a look at Ducky Shine III; Ducky is making amazing keyboards.

Although Ducky is indeed the holy grail (to me atleast) when it comes to mech keyboards, I don't understand what you meant when you said the Quickfire doesnt feel good to you. Considering you used a Filco, what exactly about the QF did you not like? (both CM and Filco are made by the same OEM - Costar)

I currently use a QuickFire TK with Browns just like Kaelynlock, but chose that over a Filco considering they are built similar, and the CM is more VFM.

Would gladly give it away though if I could find a Shine 2 TKL with browns somewhere though.

I am using a ducky shine II right now. So, I can feel the differences in term of quality. The Quickfire looks like a heavy duty keyboard. I prefer the elegant traditional look of Ducky Shine. In term of look, the Quickfire Pro doesn't look very nice. I know that the price of the Ducky Shine II is more expensive, but there are a lot of keyboards with medium price tag have this premium look such as Steelseries, Razer or TTs Sport. Also, I think the key caps quality on the Quickfire are not as good; the quality of the switches are good also. The quickfire brown switches sound a lot louder compare to my Ducky's brown switches. Also, to reduce the cost, Coolermaster doesn't put the led lights for all the keys; this problem may not matter to many people, but I give Quickfire another minus point for it.

My first Windows computer was one I built that was considered a "screamer" in its day.

486 33
8 megs of RAM
2 x 120meg drives
Vesa Local Bus 1 meg Hercules video card
300 baud modem added later with Telix and Qmodem

I also ran on the same system later Linux and OS/2.

From that time, I have lost count on all the PCs I have built for myself and for others. I moved to Mac when Vista came out as I went from annoyed by MS to furious. My fav OS remains OS/2 followed by OSX and various Linux distributions.

Post some pics of your past rigs... from the thread title it does say "Past & Present". That's what this thread is all about right?:)

BTW... I don't blame you moving to Mac at the time you did... Vista was a horrible Windows OS release. I love technology in general, so I'm open to all platforms and products... including Apple products. I'm still trying to talk my wife into a Mac Pro for her home office... but she will probably get a MB Pro or iMac. I guess I could justify why I stick with Windows PC's... but I'm not going there. I'm happy with my current gaming rig... and that's all that matters.

I know that somewhere I must have pix of my generic case on my original 486. I also have somewhere in a box the Timex-Sinclair Z-80 chip "computer" which was I guess about the size of the wireless Mac keyboard and about 3/4 inch thick. It had a membrane keypad and was meant to be hooked up to a TV. If I recall correctly, it had about 16k to work with and no ability to add any storage of any sort. I think my first project on that one was to program a clock. Those were fun days. If I manage to find any photos, I'll post but don't count on it. (g)
