View Full Version : Wraps come off Audi's new TT

Not sure... I think I preferred the previous 'frowning' design language of Audi (see A2, TT).
Headlights remind me of the new Ford Focus actually. :p

P.S. the p*ssy spoiler is gone too! yey! :D

Wow. That's like a Manga version of the old model, with almond eye shaped headlights. I really like it.

2 bad "zoom zoom zoom" is already used.
but i'm a big Audi & VW fan.
i like it-
i like the new body shape (side profile) - the older one- i was noticing yesterday- looks very similar to the bug -- this one has a more 'sporty' shape imo
would be interested in finding out how it handles compared...etc
or what the new stats really mean- as i am not doing a side by side comparison. etc-
:)
thanks for showing it to us!

Don't like it. The curves of the original were what made it looks so fabulous - I'm not a fan of angles.
I liked these ones better, I think.

The new one looks a bit grown-up. I'm sure it'll be popular with grown-ups for that very reason though. :p

Look at the back of that, it's 100% Porche.
Prefer the old one, sappy spoiler and all.

I've just re-read the article, the new one has one too... though it hides it until you're going fast enough to probably need it. :p
Wonder what clayj will think???
I'm also thinking that maybe they should've retired the TT name, and come up with a new one for this.

hmm yeah for the front i'm not so sure.. i like the grill but the headlights are kinda "seen before" compared to the original design.. and from the side profile it is obviously looking a lot like a Porsche .. at least that's what i thought of instantly

I'm a big fan of the new grill - and the headlights. I can't tell what the back looks like.
However, I do agree that the old TT was more distinctive. This looks a little too much like the A3 and A4 (both of which I love).
On the plus side, the old TT was underpowered and this should be faster.
Overall I like it a lot. Can I fit two carseats in it?

I guess the TT brand is too valuable to ditch.
Looks cool, if a little unadventurous (especially when you think of the stir the original one caused).
I hope it goes round corners better than the last one. Any news on engines or will it have the run of the current Audi line-up?
I hope it goes round corners better than the last one.
Gah are you kidding? I personally have only driven the AWD Quattro version, but that thing can handle corners insanely well. Though I would assume the FWD one wouldn't be quite as good if thats what you were referring to.

It's not bad looking at all, but the purity of the original styling is completely gone. Still a nice car though, and the TT is a strong brand.
And those headlamps look EXACTLY like those of the Focus...

They grip... but they do lack dynamics, not that they're bad or anything, but they're not as entertaining as they could be.
Though they were much better before the demasculination of it by tweaking the suspension, stability control and adding the p*ssy spoiler on the back, before that... it was an edgy little thing. ;)

It was the 180BHP one so yep, it was only FWD. Nose heavy in corners and too unsettled on uneven surfaces (i.e. most of the UK's roads). Would love to have tried the 225BHP and the 3.2 sport of course.
Weirdly, I've seen quite a few without the wing recently. I guess they must never get out of London traffic!
I'd still rather an S4 wagon, though.
It wasn't a wagon, but I saw a new RS4 saloon the other day and that thing really did look mean! The defined big grill face looks cool on all the Audi's. Particularly the W12 A8 LWB.

They were v different. My ex had a 180 and my mother had the 225 and the difference driving wise was extraordinary.
My mother loved hers - she still reckons it was one of the best cars she's owned in snow in terms of gripping the road.

The old TT is sleek, simple and a touch retro--that new thing is so overwhelmed with trite stylish puffery that it really shouldn't be called a TT.

I have to say I like it but it is lacking the spirit that the MK1 had. When I first saw the original TT (as we know it now not the one from the 50's) I new that I had to get one.
Sure the new model looks good but it can't hold a candle to the attitude, styling and or originality the old model had/has. Audi should have dropped the TT name. But it is to strong of a brand for Audi since it helped to rebuild the Audi Brand here in the US to the status they have right now.
Jay42
Apr 7, 2006, 09:58 PM
Well, the jury's still out on the exterior. I do like the profile with the parallel lines in the side panel crease and the belt line.
But once again, Audi has nailed the interior design. I'm not a huge fan of the circular vents, but those have become a kind of signature of the TT. Too bad the flat-bottomed sport wheel won't be coming to the US any time soon: they're illegal :( .
It wasn't a wagon, but I saw a new RS4 saloon the other day and that thing really did look mean!
Tough to beat the new RS4, one unbelievable car.

You know, the sad thing is that one of those, the X Type I think it is, the smaller one of the two was actually on the same wheelbase as the Contour. It rides as bad as the Ford Contour. It was a disgrace.

The 180's were Quattro's too, the 150's were FWD. ;)
All TT's are nose heavy, and understeer like a barge. More so since Audi softened them up after a spate of high speed crashes soon after launch.

Just double checked and they did 2wd and quattro versions of the 180BHP.
Now that's got me thinking... was that released after the 150PS??? I thought that the 150PS model was the first TT introduced with FWD as a cheap way onto the TT ladder, next time I see my ex (she works for Audi UK) I'll see what the deal was with that.
Talking of TT's, the 3.2 was cracking, we had one for a weekend whilst she was waiting on the A8 TTDi. Vastly superior to the Turbo models, DSG too. :D
Just a quick check... reveals that a 180 FWD TT was indeed available in 2000  so apologies to the 'Spider and AIB, ;)
They must have kept that option well hidden in the brochure... (my TT one doesn't mention it) think you did right to dump that guy 'Spider, he didn't always want to go dutch by the way did he??? heheh.

It may stop hair dressers buying them now :PThe original TT (I am on my SECOND now) came out in late 1999... I bought my first in February 2000 (a black one) and traded it in for my second in April 2002 (a silver one)... both 4-cyl manual quattros (which aren't even an option now — if you want quattro or manual, you have to get the 6-cyl model). The original TT also won several design awards, including Design of the Year from International Design magazine.
The new TT ain't gonna win any such awards. It's clearly an inferior product, the result of the original Freeman Thomas design being altered by whoever replaced him when he left VW/Audi for DaimlerChrysler. The original looked like something from the 1930s; the new one is clearly a car of the 2000s.

My initial impression of the car is not very good, but I'll reserve complete judgement until I see one in person. I do like the interior.
My girlfriend is going to be very disappointed. She was looking at getting a TT soon, and I don't know if she's going to like this new model very much.
It's insane how much bartelby's mockup looks like the new TT design! It inspired me to make a quick 'n dirty little animation. The similarity becomes even more apparent:

case in point the Audi 90 quattro (my favourtie model) woth a body kit and a pant job could look like this

Haha, Ford........a bit harsh.
I do like the side panels a lot more. The previous model looked a bit too "bubble-ish".......too rounded. It didn't look aggressive enough for me. If I buy a sports car, it better not look like it has mumps. Not saying that the original TT model was ugly, but it did look like an elongated Beetle in a way.

Not True, Audi still sell the 1.8 T Quattro 4 Cyl 6 speed manual
It may have won design awards but they are a matter of taste, the original TT look like a bubbled / elongated beatle which isn't the best platform to start designing a car. You made a pretty brought statement there, all Audi TT's are 1.8T or 3.2 V6. So yes they still make a 6 Speed. Here are the configurations as far as I know here in the US.
1.8T 180HP front wheel drive -manual, automatic
1.8T 180HP quattro -manual, automatic
1.8T 225HP quattro -manual (automatic not an option)
3.2 V6 250HP DSG only in the US (launch control disabled)
I think the manual were dropped in the later model years of the front wheel drive.
One thing not to forget about the first version TT is that it went from design study pretty much straight to production (only minor changes were made). Here are a few pictures for comparison of the new and old.

VW did this same thing with their lineup too (yes I know, VW owns Audi)...although the Passats actually look better with the new models I think. The new Jettas are hideous (except for the R-GT version). The GTI's are nice....all except for the front.
