A group of nine people survived their SUV being swept off the road by an avalanche in Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah. That must have been some avalanche:

He said the snow slide was about 6 feet high and 100 years wide.

Three members of the ski patrol at Mammoth Mountain (central California) ski resort were killed while uncovering a safety fence buried in snow near a crevasse (news link (http://www.latimes.com/la-040706mammoth_lat,0,4065139.story)), one of them trying to save the other two.

Nature, particuarly snow in the mountains, is sometimes hard for us humans to deal with, and skiing is great fun but can be dangerous.
