but we don't have people who know how to drive safely in bad weather, our roads don't have the funding for this many pot holes, and our emergency services are overloaded

cal trans could only fix so much and nobody could have imagined such a long and persistent season

so for those of you who are used to a lot of rain, imagine what it would be like if your populace and authorities were not funded for, or used to wetness like this past february

It's not quite right to compare rainfall in one area to a totally different area.

I don't see why you can't compare rainfall in different areas. Maybe not around the world areas, but I don't see why Washington, NY, Boston can't be compared. Same for somewhat close major cities on the west coast (like Sacramento and SF)...Or places like Edinburgh and Glasgow...

Yeah, but I think that a lot of areas aren't structured or maintained to sustain heavy rainfall. When we get heavy rain here, I don't imagine that our situation is much different than yours (except that most of the DC area is reclaimed swamp...).

My point was that nearby cities are easy enough to compare. But, on jef's point, I think you can go further and say that areas with similar rainfall levels and patterns are easy enough to compare. As a side thought, I don't know if even that is that true. Many memories of Santiago, Chile where winter means cold and rain (and they know it) but places with five-plus feet of flooding because storm drains weren't properly maintained.

In Southern California at least, January and February (usually the rainiest months), were exceptionally dry and warm this year. We're getting a fairly normal amount precip, just a month or two later than usual.

jef's right. Around here we usually have a few months around what the rest of the world would call winter where it rains on a regular basis. Our systems are designed for that because that's what usualy happens. Its highly unusual for this particular area to have this much rain in this short of period, the land isn't designed for it, the systems we created aren't sesigned or funded to keep control of it and the people aren't used to it.

Sac and SF are pretty different as far as climate as far as I know (my knowledge is pretty limited of it since I've never been up there) but I beleive its a lot dryer than it is around here and probably less windy. That's the thing about California, its full of a bunch of different micro-climates.

Yeah, I remember the news about all the land/mudslides down there last year, thankfully it hasn't gotton quite that extreme here, there's been quite a bit of flooding in various places, especially where there's rivers or creeks around, I think the Russian River in Sonoma county did a bit of damage when it flooded and there were some slides in that area but nothing too serious.

It was 96ºF here yesterday. Then it was in the 50's at night. Today it is 75ºF.

It's nice, sunny and warm - but these rapid temperature fluxuations really do mess with me and my head (physically, not psychologically).

You are not weird in my book.

One of my fondest memories is spending a night on a very hot dance floor, and having a "cold" rain cool me off. There was something about seeing the steam come off my body. During warmer months, there is a comfort in a warm, gentle rain upon the body.

I am sadden when I hear of the death and destruction that storms bring to the "heartland'. But for some of us in the Mid-Atlantic, March was very crewel as far as rain goes. DCA reported just .05" of rain for the month. And we are about 3.5" behind where we need to be at this time. We have had many small brush fires, most we don't see.

It doesn't negate the lose of life. But we don't always hear about those that lost their lives to low water pressure due to the lack of rain, as we do when tornados come through.

I am concerned as to what this year may bring to the DC area. We have been on a roller coaster of extremes here so far. Tonight is supposed to dip in to the 30's.

It's usually a comfortable 68 degrees with partly cloudy skies. June-October is typically around 80 degrees with no clouds.
