I'd have to say that I'm a bit dissapointed, I was going to try to talk my parents into getting an iMac when we get some more money coming in but after comparing the low-end 1Ghz tower and the 1Ghz iMac, it seems like the tower is a better deal, especially since we already have a 17" monitor (even though it's a non-flat CRT)
It looks like the last generation of iMacs were a better value for the dollar than the last generation of Powermacs but not this one.
Blech.

this is certainly less than what they have done lately, but i'll take it with the grain of salt that apple has done great things lately.

Sorry if this has been realized by everyone other than myself  , but you can hook this thing up to your tv now:D [with the appropriate adapter of course].
I know you could this on the previous models by purchasing 3rd party products like"iTview" or "myTV", but now it supports it natively.
To me, this implies that the ability to hack the video card [64vram vs. 32vram BTW] in order to support display/monitor spanning should be possible.
ALSO, audio line in and everything else
$200 less:D !!
My rating: Two thumbs and a big toe up:)

The iMac has always been a consumer product. That does not mean it is intended to compete with PowerMacs. If you need more speed, dual processors, etc. then you need to be looking at the PowerMacs. AFAIC, this update is amazing especially considering how close it is to the specs of the low end PowerMac. For all of you desiring a headless iMac look at the low end PowerMac.

Intending switcher here...
I was hoping for a mid-range option - say the old 17"/800Mhz Superdrive model for around £1,200 or so. So now I have 2 options:
17"/1GHz iMac for £1,450, or keep my existing monitor & get an equal-spec PowerMac 1Ghz for £1,380.
I'm edging towards the PowerMac...

I feel that the top end imac seems to be a pretty good value, but as others have said, there's just too large of a difference between the low and high end. If you take away expandability, the new top imac has the low end powermac beat in every way

As I wrote in a couple of other threads, one of my friends had been waiting to switch and this weekend she will be getting the new 17" - it's everything she wants/needs. So thumbs up!

this opionion is for the high end machine--fantastic-200mhz more,DDR,Faster harddrive, blue tooth,133 bus,ilife,64mb video, and they lowered the price! IT ROCKS! Hate to say it but in less then 2 years they have a imac that blows away my powermac with pro speakers and bigger screen which i had to buy and for less money.:)

I thought that the iMacs were expected. Everyone knew that the updates were going to come within a few weeks, and they did. But I wasn't surprised.

yeah, it's expectations that screw you over everytime. we could all be a lot happier about, for instance, education, if we all just expected students to attempt to kill people every day. then we'd be so happy when they came home from school with their C and D report cards....
same with the economy.

I think the new iMacs are offering more value that I expected from Apple. Aside from gouging RAM prices, I'm satisfied. I would like to see the internal modems dropped from the high end models to cust costs.
It's been so long I forgot what dial-up is like, but if you're buying a high end iMac and don't have broadband you can get a USB modem. Apple should drop internal modems and cust initial system cost. Then maybe they wouldn't have to hold RAM for RANSOM.

I agree. A person getting a high end iMac would have to be
crazy to not have broadband.

I have no interest in the iMac, want to get a 23" Cinema Display.
